Question for those who have gone through an egg retrieval

Good Morning! For those who don't know, a bit of background about me is that I have gone through 5 IUIs (all BFNs) and DH and I are prepping for our first IVF cycle in April. I know that each cycle is different, and people respond to stims differently as well, but I am wondering what cycle day your ER was. Does it usually correlate to when you ovulated in other cycles? Non medicated I usually ovulate later like CD 16-19 but on meds for my IUIs I ovulated like CD 13-15. I am curious to know from you ladies what CD your ER was on, thanks!

Married 9/2012

TTC #2 starting 9/2019
BFP 7/13/2020!
Due 3/18/2021

TTC #1 since 2/2015
Diagnosis: Unexplained Infertility 9/2015
IUIs #1-#5: 9/2015-2/2016 all BFNs
Moving to IVF with ICSI and PGS 5/2016-6/2016  Just kidding, BFP 4/4/2016!

Re: Question for those who have gone through an egg retrieval

  • Hi!

My ER was on CD17, which was kind of in sync with my ovulation while doing IUI on hormones and without (I ovulate around CD16-18).
But I've been told that I should not keep track of my ovulation day, as they will not look at that either.

GL on your first IVF, sending you warm thoughts and baby dust!

  • @erica0901 - It is a completely synthetic cycle so forget everything you know about your natural cycle haha... all the meds you'll be on will control the cycle. Generally speaking it breaks out roughly as follows:

    CD 1/2 - period
CD 2 or 3 first appointment with RE to check bloodwork and vaginal ultrasound
CD 4 - start injections for stimming follicle production (may start later depending on your body)
CD 4-14 - stimms, going in every few days for bloodwork/ultrasound
CD 15 - trigger (this is dependent on how you respond to stimms, I know for me I continued stimms a few days extra last time)
CD 16/17 - egg retrieval & DH semen deposit
CD 18-22 - embryo growth - you'll get calls with update. Some clinic will do a cd 3 transfer if you don't respond well and don't have many embryos to work with - that's what happened for me round 1. hopefully you have enough and can go for a fresh day 5 transfer
    CD 22 - embryo transfer
CD 23 and beyond - the dreaded 2ww - you'll have beta scheduled likely 2 weeks from transfer, although some clinics may do it earlier...

Do you mind me asking what your diagnosis is? Or are you unexplained?

You may want to change the title of your post to egg retrieval instead of fresh transfer as you as asking about ER.

I started Follistim on 11/19 and Menopur on 11/22.  My egg retrieval was 11/29, so it was definitely much quicker than a normal cycle.  I had stopped taking BCPs on 11/16 if that helps you understand the dates more.  Goodluck and keeping my fx for you!
  • I took my last BCP on 10/13 and my ER was on 10/30. I have PCOS so I never ovulate, so I can't quite help with that part of your question. For a previously medicated IUI cycle I had CD1 on 2/25 and IUI on 3/13, which was CD17.

  • Thanks for the replies ladies :) We have a very busy April already with a few weekend trips planned so I am trying to "guesstimate" as to when the ER would be, even though I know I really have no control!

@tvh1982 thanks for the warm thoughts and I'm sending them right back to you!

@oxinfree our diagnosis is unexplained. Since I have never been pregnant before we will also be doing ICISI as suggested by our RE.

@piperella thanks for your response, I just changed the title!

    @AandDM2014 thanks for the reply!

  • @erica0901 - I was totally one of those crazy ladies who packed a lunch bag of injections when we went on an out of town weekend trip.. it wasn't too bad.  My RE wasn't super strict with the timing of our injections.. if we took something at night, he said to do it at night.. it didn't necessarily have to be at 8pm or whatever.. it helped me relax about it.  You should have a good idea as to how you will respond based on your first u/s after starting the injections... they can give you a window (typically 12-14 days once you start taking the meds) but I was early at 10 days.  So excited you are doing IVF.. it's definitely exciting!

Ty, @oxinfree!  I did read your good news and am excited you are moving forward with IVF!  I think I forgot to respond, though!
  • @erica0901 I had my ER on cd10, which is a lot earlier than I usually ovulate. During a non-medicated cycle, I usually ovulate around cd20. My body responded really well to stims, maybe even too well. I had 40+ eggs retrieved. I was told to take my meds the same time every night. I tried not to plan anything during the two weeks of stims, ER and ET. I wasn't sure how I would feel. By cd7, I was so bloated I could barely walk. Oh and your given an injection to prevent ovulation. This helps completely control when you will ovulate. I think I started taking it on cd 6 or 7. When your RE feels your ready, you'll stop taking that shot and take the trigger to induce ovulation.

Good luck on your upcoming cycle!
  • I have regular cycles, no fertility issues (our issue is motility) and I typically ovulate on CD14. From stopping BCP to egg retrieval for me was 19 days, or from the post BCP period, CD 16. Unfortunately my cycle was a bust, 14 eggs retrieved, only 2 were mature enough to fertilize, and my two embryos stopped growing on day 3. We found out that I was over suppressed with the Lupron, and are trying again in May at a new clinic. Good luck with your cycle!
