Any other plus size ladies?

Re: Any other plus size ladies?

  • My doc last time was amazing about it. He never said a word about my weight, and I was in perfect health. I gained 30 pounds, and every ounce of it went straight out in my belly. I've had friends close their eyes on the scale and ask the doc to not mention their weight unless it was being put on at an alarming rate, any good doctor should accommodate that.

I outgrew maternity pants by 25 weeks, and with a summer baby I was 100% in maxi skirts when I went out of the house at the end. This momma didn't give a f--- what anyone thought about me waddling through the store after week 30.

  • I'm a 12/14. my weight has always fluctuated and I'm actually pretty mad at myself because I just gained all this weight back that I had lost 2 years ago but it is what it is! I'm healthy otherwise so I'm hoping I doesn't lead to any problems!

  • Size 16/18 here. I just met with my OB today for my first visit.  Tadpole is doing great, blood pressure's great, and she didn't say a word about my weight. This is a weight off my shoulders as I was extremely worried she would be negative about it (in addition to all the other FTM and 1st trimester worries)! I've been striving to worry less about size and more about health, and I'm so happy to have found a doctor who is in the same camp!
  • One right here! :)

I am currently 5W/4D and am going into this pregnancy a little apprehensive. Right before I found out I was pregnant, I was a size 18/20 - I had joined a gym and was starting the 21-day Fix. Not to say I can’t do anything about my weight now, but I was not feeling 100% about my weight in the first place, let alone being pregnant with it! I saw my doctor on Monday, and she said I’ll be put into the high risk category because of my thyroid (pre-existing problem) and my blood pressure has skyrocketed since becoming preggers. Not my idea of fun, but I would rather be looked at on the regular than not at all. She also recommended I keep with the gym idea, just not doing anything excessive for obvious reasons. I’m going to try and follow the Weight Watchers plan also, as it’s not as much cutting food out of your life, but simply eating better. So I’ll see how it goes!

  • I was a 14/16 but with the fertility treatments I went up to 16/18.  I don't even know what I am now, as when I went through my retrieval (the worst bloating ever), I only wear one pair of dress pants, and the rest of the time I wear dresses, tights, and leggings.  All my bloodwork was excellent (18 months prior to seeking infertility treatments I had the gastric sleeve surgery and lost 100 lbs) just before the transfer, so hopefully it is still looking good.  I've already bought a lot more stretchy knit dresses and maxi dresses in preparation for the summer.  I can't wait to have a cute baby bump (fingers crossed). I'm going to WDW in March for a work conference and am planning to buy some ON maternity yoga pants so I can be totally comfortable.  I'm a nervous FTM, too!
  • @Piperella : I saw you start the ultrasound thread and squee'd that you are pregnant! If I haven't said so before now, I am so happy for you. In the least creepy way possible, I've loosely followed your TTC journey and it makes me feel so excited for you.

  • Thank you, @PrimRoseMama!  It's definitely been a journey, one that I still am very much on.  I've never been someone that just had things come easy to them, so I guess I shouldn't have expected this to be a walk in the park either.  I'm so nervous, excited, thrilled, and anxious.  Not that it really matters, but both DH and I were thrilled when we found out the EDD would be in October because the temps at WDW would be cool enough to go when they got older on their birthday.  Otherwise, we were planning to tell our future child their birthday was in November or February.  I appreciate all the squee'ing and happiness!  I'm glad you're here too!  I've seen your name on and off as I hopped through some of the forums and it was nice to see a familiar name.
  • 18 here. I never gain much (if anything) while pregnant, then go way down below pre-pregnancy within two weeks after and then gain it ALL back while breastfeeding.

  • I had my first rude/weight related comment today. I had to run over to my grandmothers house this morning and she goes "maybe this will be a chance for you to lose some weight, eating fruits and vegetables and stuff like that". FU grandma! I eat pretty healthy, but I just so happen to be fat too! My family is SO judgmental against anyone overweight, it's ridiculous. I'm perfectly healthy, I don't need your rude comments grandma.

I'm a size 16 (proportioned well, but am 5'6'' & 217 lbs) and have been hanging out in that number for some time now. The two main things that makes me nervous with gaining the weight is the gradual rise in blood pressure and also the carpal tunnel issues that are already slightly present. With DS #2 (9 years ago), I was 220 at delivery and was already in a rapidy growing danger range for my blood pressure but my doc had told me at the time that if I didn't lose the weight, she was going to have to submit a referral for surgery on my wrist, which, at the time, was constantly making my hand go numb. I wake up with numbness in my right hand almost daily and on top of that I type all day at work, so of course, that's going to exacerbate that.

I was on a GREAT weight loss/eating better/working out more track in the start of the new year, but now it'll be focused on getting a healthy diet of foods in and more moderate, but consistent, amount of activity. Sounds crazy, but I feel SO much hungrier already! LOL!  :o

Edit- Oh! Forgot to say that I'm already starting out with like a 4 mo-sized pudge from SOOOO many years ago. I may look bigger than I am sooner because of this. Here's a pic before my MC last year to give you an idea:

  • @J+A2008 as an October board we decided to wait until later in our pregnancies to make a Facebook group. As far as plus size and pregnant groups/pages I have followed Plus Size Mommy Memioirs for a long time. There is a lot of good information on their Facebook and website about plus size maternity clothes, baby carriers, EVERYTHING. It's a great community.

  • Thanks!!!  My sil had twins a couple of years ago and was in two mommy groups. They became very close and when things got pretty scary they really helped her :) Anxious to do as well....but I shall wait with the group :)  I will look up the the Plus Size Mommy Memoirs now
  • I'm also plus sized.  I was actually taking a break and NTNP to lose weight when I got my BFP.  I am currently a size 18(pant)/2x (top) and about 230.

I was 210 in my last pregnancy and you could totally tell I was pregnant by 20w.  I am top heavy too (skinny legs and butt, big stomach and chest).   I worried about looking pregnant but you can still really tell!

  • Plus size here too... I'm currently a 14/16 235 lbs currently 22/24 285 lbs. For over the past year I've been working really hard in the gym with a personal trainer to get in shape and be healthy so I could get pregnant and carry a healthy baby. Back in 2010 I had the lapband surgery that went horribly wrong and I almost didn't make it. Spent a month in the hospital with multiple surgeries and months of recovery at home. Still working on a few things. I'm thankful I'm here today and ever more grateful we are pregnant with our first!! I wanted to lose as much as I could, it kills me that the scale doesn't really reflect my hard work. I lost more inches than lbs. My trainer had me lifting a lot with cardio. It's been HARD but totally worth it all!! I can't be more happy. Hopefully when I see the dr on March 2 there won't be much said about my weight. I'm in perfect health otherwise that damn BMI chart saying I'm morbidly obese. My biggest fear in all this, besides a miscarriage, is gaining too much weight. But I'm continuing to stay active and eat healthy. Best of luck to all you moms!! Really happy to have joined these boards. I find a lot of comfort in them and love all the support.

  • Glad to see this thread -- it's good to know that I'm not alone.  I'm a size 18 right now but I'm short.  I'm not happy with my body right now and would have liked to lost some more weight before this BFP, but ultimately we were not willing to put TTC on hold for that.  I'm a little worried about what my OB will say when I go in because she said she would like me to lose some weight before getting pregnant again when I saw her last -- I am down about 10 pounds, but I don't think that will be enough to get out of a lecture.  Oh well.  I'm healthy, I'm thrilled about the BFP, and for now I'm just going to focus on eating healthy and moderate exercise to make this pregnancy as easy as possible for the bean and I.

  • I'm so glad to see this thread as well. I am another plus size mom to be. This is my second pregnancy; my first one ended in a loss in Dec 2015. My obgyn has told me similar things that others have heard, which is that eating healthy and exercising are important during pregnancy regardless of your size. I also read a book called Big Beautiful and Pregnant by Cornelia van der Ziel M.D. I found it really helpful for talking about plus size specific health recommendations and it was very destigmatizing and non shaming. I highly recommend it! Good luck to all of you ladies.
  • I'm so happy I'm not alone.  I'm size 18, 243lbs.  The doctors were concerned with my weight in the beginning but it was because I was having a hard time getting pregnant and they felt my weight was hindering the process (even though my dad's side of the family is all big women and they got pregnant with healthy babies).  Now I'm pregnant, which was a surprise! I know the OB is concerned about the risks that comes with overweight pregnancy, but I'm trying to stay healthy, even though I am eating whatever my body is willing to keep down.

  • I'm overweight and have been for my last couple of pregnancies. I was super dedicated to having a natural birth with my first, in part because I wanted to defy the stereotype of larger mamas having complications, and I pulled it off thanks to lots of prep with Hypnobabies. I also switched from a midwife who wanted to put me on a GD diet when I had passed the tests for GD to an OB who is awesome, has had four children, trusts her patients and their bodies, and has never made a comment about my weight. I am very active and have still gained 40-50 lbs with each pregnancy and both kids have been over 9 lbs, and while I've come to realize that's just how my body does things, I occasionally feel kind of bad for having big babies. Find a provider you love and trust and everything will be fine. And we're here! We're all in this together.
  • My boss today me I started showing today. I've lost 10 lbs and definitely not showing yet... Just fat but I got a kick out of it... My pants are not helping today because I said it to myself this morning but it's way too early... Still laughing though lol

  • I'm a 16 (210lb, 5'9) plus size.  How has everyone tracked their eating as a plus sized MTB?  I was on a strict (doctor prescribed) 1000 cal low-carb diet and lost 20 lbs right before I got my BFP.  I've already started back on carbs (as I read ketosis is bad for baby), but I'm considering a nutritionist to help me set up the right eating plan.

    Thoughts?

  • @UTAmbs11 Just because someone is plus sized doesn't mean they need to track their eating. Not saying you shouldn't, because I don't know your medical situation, but it's not like we're all on restrictive diets here. I eat what I want when I want. I like to be additive rather than subtractive, so I'll say "drink more water" instead of less soda or "eat more vegetables" instead of less dessert. I think the rule for dealing with morning sickness and other things like heartburn -- multiple small meals a day -- is good advice for everyone. I have had to be more careful of how much I eat at once because I've been pretty bloated.

  • Hi all! I am a size 24 and have been concerned about my weight also. This is my first pregnancy and it was completely unplanned so I already feel behind on a lot of things. My first doctor visit is Tuesday, so fingers crossed.
  • Hi there! I'm also plus sized. I lost about 20 pounds 2 years ago and then 15 pounds since starting TTC and metformin. Now I'm usually a size 14/16. I generally eat a fairly low carb diet but lately bread and ginger ale have been my staples.

    Hi-
I'm size 20 on the bottom and 18 on top...at least I was until my tata's started ballooning. I am not worried about looking preggers later on. I have no torso, so once the baby gets bigger, the only way to go is out. LOL!

  • @UTAmbs11 - I was on a 1,200 calorie diet for 9 months prior to getting my BFP, so I know all about calorie tracking. I use My Fitness Pal and I set my calorie goal to maintenance (1950 calories for me). I've been eating a lot of nutritious foods to help baby develop, but I've also had to add some calorie dense foods to reach my calorie goal. I would suggest trying that if you're wanting to track your calorie intake. My doctor approved it for me and it's been great. I've been at the same weight (with some daily fluctuations, of course) since February 11th.

  • @CopperBoom86 YOU LOOK AMAZING!!! Its very hard work but totally all worth it in the end. Just wish I felt better lately to get back in the gym. My dr appointment went great! They had no issue with my weight and they said I'm healthy. The dr just said I shouldn't gain until 20 weeks. So I'll make sure to keep eating healthy and try to get back into the gym as soon as I feel better. Keep up the great work!!!

  • @CopperBoom86 you look fantastic!  Congratulations on all your hard work.

@UTambs11 - I'm tracking my food on LiveStrong but I'm not really restricting what I eat.  I'm trying to make healthy choices but I'm not going too crazy and I'm not restricting calories (except in the sense that very high calorie and low nutrition foods are not a healthy choice.)  I had pizza yesterday for lunch (which was the only thing that sounded good until I actually ate it, when my stomach immediately expressed displeasure with my choice).  The main reason I'm tracking is that (1) it helps me be make more conscious choices about what I'm eating instead of being mindless, and (2) I strongly suspect that my OB may refer me to a nutritionist when I go in for my first appointment, and I'm sure the nutritionist will want to see a food journal when I meet with him/her, so I might as well start tracking now.

  • I was planning on losing some weight before this pregnancy but it happened sooner than expected. My doctor isn't concerned but my mom (who doesn't know we're expecting yet) has been asking me about my diet/excise every time I see her and reminding me I need to lose weight before I get pregnant and I'm almost dreading telling her because I think she'll be disappointed. I know she'll be an amazing grandma and love the baby and once she gets over it I know she'll be really supportive and helpful during mh pregnancy but I'm just not looking forward to telling her anymore and it sucks.

  • Thank you @ktcakes87 for starting this, and to everyone who has chimed in! I'm a 16 and only 5'4", carrying most of my weight in my midsection. One of my first questions to my OB was if my weight was an issue. He very calmly told me the extra things he would monitor, gave me guidelines for overall weight gain, and moved on to the next topic. He also told me not to try to actively lose weight, but rather to get exercise with cardio 5xwk and not to go crazy with the snacks. After my fears about my weight putting the baby at risk were calmed, I started worrying about if I would actually look preggo - the photos you all have posted are great! As vain as it is, I want to be able to take the week over week pics, and most of the boards/books start that at week 7, which is great if you have a flat stomach. Not so much if you're already carrying a bunch of weight there.

  • Hi there! I'm 6 weeks today and the heaviest I have ever beenMy youngest child is now 6 and I'm a lot heavier this time around oh and much older! I'm feeling very insecure about it. I feel like my stomach already resembles a 6 month belly so will anyone even think I'm pregnant? Or just assume I am very fat. Will my body handle delivery? Will doctors make assumptions? Yesterday I worked out, especially my abs, and ate very healthy. I'm not trying to lose weight. I would just like to be in better shape and stronger! I'm sure my emotions and hormones are not helping my insecurities!
