career: I'm a registered nurse. I work in cardiac and pulmonary intensive care.
Worrisome while pregnant: obviously being around sick people. It's not the worst part though. As a nurse you have an immune system of steal. I rarely get sick. And honestly i do mostly cardiac ICU but I'm cross trained in pulmomary ICU. The cardiac patients are sick but not b sick with contagious type things ( usually). Working with pulmonary is a little more worrisome. Certain diseases i could be exposed to and need to be careful...TB, shingles etc. Being exposed to combative patients is a little worrisome too. I just need to be careful with the type i take and speak up for myself. I work 12 hour shifts but I'm used to it so i think I'll be ok.
time off: full 12 weeks. I plan on Working up until day of delivery. I'm a go getter. Nothing stops me. Unless of course I'm placed on bedrest or something crazy.
when will i tell: maybe 12 weeks along? 14? Who knows. It Will be first so i don't really know a good time to tell. Unfortunately i might have to spill the beans sooner if i can't do Certain things or be with certain patients. Im s charge nurse so hopefully I'll have a little control over it. I would only need to share with other charge nurses though
stay at home? no. Going back after 12 weeks. Possibly part time though.
Career: Clinical project management for a major pharma
Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? No, not really. My job is totally an office job with occasional travel. I may have a meeting in July to go to but it will be somewhere here in the US. Hopefully I will be out of the first tri & feel reasonably sure about being away a couple of days.
How much time will you take off? I get 6-8wks paid short term disability. Hoping to take at least 12weeks between vacation time etc.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? My closets co-workers & boss know about my two losses & know I am working with the RE. My manager has been beyond supportive of my appointments etc. We have unlimited sick & personal time at the discretion of the manager, so she is totally fine with me being away from my desk for an hour or so for the check-ups. I probably will tell my manager right away but no one else.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? Nope. I enjoy working & the life we have chosen requires my income.

@FiancB I think it would depend on where you end up and who your manager is. I don't know about skilled nursing, but in the hospital at least orientation is pretty expensive for them, so they'd probably be motivated to give you leave even if you hadn't been there long enough. My manager is generally flexible in giving staff leave if they need it. Yay for almost being done with school!!
ETA: one of the women in my cohort got pregnant towards the end of school. I'm pretty sure she was pregnant when she was hired and she's still working at the same hospital so it must've worked out ok for her. I hope it all works out smoothly for you

Career: a manager for Financial assistance department in a hospital
do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Just being in a hospital overall with all the various germs but I take precautions when necessary
how much time will you take off? I get 4 weeks before due date, and then 14 weeks after
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? My boss knows I'm ttc so prob fairly early. I was very sick with DS so if it's anything like that, they would know early anyway.
will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? I wish I could afford too.
Career: nursing student, though even if I get pregnant right this second I will have graduated and hopefully started working by the time baby got here
Do you worry about certain aspects of your job while pregnant? I'm more worried about timing. *previous pregnancy/loss mention* the timing before, when I would've been due in July, would've been perfect. I would've graduated in May, taken the NCLEX, had the baby when H was off for the summer, then start working when I felt ready. Now I'd end up being due in December at the earliest, so I could end up interviewing while pregnant, or not qualifying for leave. I don't want to wait though.
Otherwise, depends on what kind of nursing I go into. I'm guessing my first job will be at a TCU in a nursing home or something like that, shouldn't really be anything more exotic than pneumonia or C. diff going on, so I'm not too worried about it. Though I was just starting to get super-smell in clinical and that was bothersome.
How much time time will you take off: As much as I can, though the thought of using vacation time and whatnot is depressing. If I have leave, I'll take it all, if I don't, I think 6-8 weeks is probably reasonable. Even if I don't technically qualify for leave, I'm sure that the facility I end up working at would rather take me back than break in a different new person, so I'm not super worried about it. Maybe I'm overly optimistic. Other nurses, thoughts?
When will you tell colleagues/boss: Previously, I told my instructor right away in case there was anything dangerous, and I also wanted her to know what was going on in case I had to run to puke or something. I would probably do the same again, probably at around 8 weeks, or earlier if I was getting sick or had other concerns.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for. While? I'd love to but it's more likely that H would be a SAHD. Maybe we'll take turns. He's a teacher so he has the steady job, so I'm hoping I can get something flexible to complement that.
I'm a nurse and you asked for other nurses thoughts. Here is my take on it. Nurses are replaceable. I'm not confident on the fmla laws but I'm thinking you need to be there for a full year to get 12 weeks or you are only eligible for 6-8...maybe someone can correct me but iits something like that. You can always ASK for the full 12 but they don't have to. Nurses and CNAs have been turned down at my job. But then again i work for a very competative hospital that somehow seems to pull nurses out of their back pockets ready to work. Don't count on it...seriously. If it were not illegal i bet ys hospitals wouldn't even offer fmla for nurse mothers...you would have to take vacation. physician mothers would get paid maternity leave though. Just don't count on getting the full 12. Be prepared to only get like 6 or 8. Unless you continue working at a place you are currently at.
Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? I travel a lot and often work 60+ hours a week.
How much time will you take off? 12 weeks When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? likely pretty early on. My larger projects will need to be reassigned and it will take a long time to bring everyone up to speed and hire more temps. I know I shouldn't, but I already feel guilty about leaving my team to have a baby. Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? absolutely! I'll have the rest of my life to work.
Me - 33 DH - 30 Married May 2015 TTC #1 since January 2016 BFP 03/14/16 EDD 11/22/16
Career: Social Worker-Independent Living Specialist (Child Protection). I work with youth between the ages of 16 and 20 who are or have been in foster care.
Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Not necessarily while pregnant, but I worry about service continuity for the youth while I am on maternity leave.
How much time will you take off? I plan to take 12 weeks.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? I will more than likely wait until after the first trimester. I ended up sharing my first pregnancy with a few coworkers and it spread through the office, making it just that much more awkward after the loss.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? No. We definitely depend on the monthly income and I really love my job.

Whoa. I think you could say this about any job really. Isn't everyone technically replaceable? I think it's really crappy that the facility you work for turns down nurses that ask for the full maternity leave! Maybe I am lucky to work in the city I am in. We have several large competitive hospitals and hundreds of job openings in nursing. I can't speak about the other hospitals but I know the one I work for would be happy to give someone 12 weeks off if it meant getting to keep them in the long run. Good nurses can be hard to find and once you hire one you work with them to keep them on staff.

Career: Estimator for a commercial printing company.
Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Not really. I have my own office and a sit down job. The nausea would suck but at least I could close my door and use my garbage can if I can't get to the bathroom in time.
How much time will you take off? I plan to take 12 weeks family leave plus DH and I would both take our 1 week vacation the first week home after baby. I also have the ability to work from home, so if my employer doesn't want to pay for a full 12 week leave, I can work from home for a while so I still earn my income.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? I plan on waiting until after the 12 week mark unless symptoms and doctors appointments require me to come clean sooner. When I get KU I'll be considered high risk so appointments and follow ups will be consistent and my doctor is far from where I work/live. I recently moved about 1.5 hours away.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? Yes and no. I will be able to work 2 days from home for my job but will still work full time. This will allow DH and I to keep both incomes that we need while cutting down on child care costs.
Career: I work in student affairs at a small, private college.
Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? No. I am mostly in an office setting interacting with students and supervising a staff, so nothing that will put me at risk.
How much time will you take off? 12 weeks and I have another 5 weeks of PTO saved up as of right now, but I plan to save some of the PTO and not use all of it unless needed.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? Probably at 12 weeks unless something comes up and I need to notify her sooner.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? No, I will continue to work. My parents live very close to us and my MIL will be retiring soon (she currently works with me as well) so she will be able to help out as well. My parents are chomping at the bit to have a grandchild they can take care of during the day. My hours are flexible enough that I could work from home 1-2 days a week if needed as well. Same with DH.

I'm an Executive Assistant to the President and Board of Trustees so I am in more of a "project manager" role and it can get insane. how much time will you take off? I plan on quitting instead of going on Maternity leave When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff They do know about my medical issues due to me having to take time off for appointments. I mean obviously they can't turn down my request for 12 weeks because that would be illegal. I've been there for 5 years. But you are right that you need to be one of the good ones. Your manager doesn't want to loose a good one. So your chances will be better. Try to get involved in as much as as possible while you are working. Get I. your managers good side and you might get the full 12.
I appreciate both views, including negative, especially from a charge nurse. I think my chances would be better here in MN, but we might be moving to CA and I hear the job market is much tougher there Still, I'm hoping that lengthy and expensive orientations will work in my favor.
I'm in full support of everyone getting a full 12 even if you haven't be there a full year. Just a suggestion to make sure you do. Let's say you get hired and start working in July. Don't start trying until otober or November. That way if you got pregnant right away baby would be born at your one year mark. US maternity leave is an embarrassment. I don't even like to call it maternity leave because lets face it...we do NOT have maternity leave. We have FMLA. It sucks my husband has to take vacation to be with me so he can still get paid and that he will go back right away. What held us back from having kids is saving the money to go 12 weeks of me on no pay. I refuse to drain my PTO for it. I plan on using about half.
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Nothing really. We have the occasional crappy clients and some stress, but that's every workplace I think.
How much time will you take off? I am hoping for a full year. We can qualify for EI (unemployment) but it won't last the whole year.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? As long as I can keep a secret for. We have a small office of 3 or 4 assistants (depending on if Bossman's wife is in) and two lawyers so we're pretty close. Bossman 2's wife is pregnant and he came in hooting and hollering all excited the day she took her test, so I'm hoping to last at least a little longer than that.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? I would love to, but I don't think we can afford it. I'm hoping maybe I can work part time like Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and put any potential children in day care part time, but we'll see what happens.
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Nothing particularly. It can be high stress some days but nothing too crazy.
How much time will you take off? I plan to take about 8 weeks when the time comes.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? I'm hoping to be able to hold out until the 12 week mark.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? I wish that was an option for us but my job provides a little less than half of our family income so it would be really hard to make things work financially. Thankfully I have the BEST parents/ step parents who are all retired and love to watch their grand kiddos during the work week. It definitely eases some of the working mom guilt that I sometimes feel with my 6 year old.
Career: I'm an Assistant Director of Admissions at a small, private college. Shoutout to my other higher ed folks @beary67 and @EgnaroBean !!
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? I travel for 4-5 weeks out of the year in the fall visiting high schools and working college fairs in my territories. I just worry about being away from home while pregnant and having some type of issue for which I might need my personal doctor or OB.
How much time will you take off? This one is tough. We don't have a maternity leave policy and are forced to either use all of our accrued sick time first and then vacation time after that. I would love to take a full 12 weeks but would most likely have to fill half of that with FMLA, meaning that I wouldn't get paid for 1/2 of it. So, it may only end up being 6 weeks.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? My boss already knows that we're TTC--we are very tight-knit group and she is one of my good friends, so I wanted her to know; she has been through being a traveling admissions rep and having children, so she gets it. I would probably wait until 10 weeks to tell the rest of my coworkers, just for the security factor. They're all my friends too!
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? I WISH that I had the option to be a SAHM, as I have always dreamed of that. My husband is currently back in school finishing a music ed degree, and even when he graduates in a year or two and enters the teaching world, we'll need both of our incomes to survive. Oh well! I enjoy my job, so it's not a big deal.

Career: Prior to being a SAHW due to my husbands carrier moving us all over the darn place, I was a child development specialist in a shelter. I have been toying with the idea of trying to find work here in our new city, but hubby Is worried that we'll be moving again in July. So right now I will probably wait until we have an answer on whether we will be here another year or not. Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? If I were To be working, I would worry about morning sickness bc I'd be around children with basically nobody to Tag me out. It's kind of like teaching in that regard. But the thing I would worry about MUST is the probability that I'm around while one of these children becomes physically violet. They are often severely emotionally unstable because of their past. It breaks my heart. But I would be really afraid because I've been kicked in the stomach several times (don't worry... I wasn't pregnant)
How much time will you take off? I would be a SAHM. As much as I love it, My job is emotionally draining and it would be difficult to come home and care for a young child while in that line of work. I used to come home and need a good hour to myself so that I could brush off the trauma of the day, and with a baby, that would be next to impossible. I would probably start graduate school once my children were school age, And then start the career I've dreamed about... A play therapist.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? If I were working, I would tell As soon as I knew bc if A child became out if control physically I could not be the one to help.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? I would want to be a SAHM until my children were school age.

I'm so glad to hear the nursing perspectives as well, as I'm applying in the next few months. My only nursing job has been 5 years for the military and they don't care. 6 (now 12-18) weeks and your butt is theirs again. I don't know how it is civilian side, but being a strong learner/worker and just an easy person to work with can go a long way with management. Hopefully that can help in negotiating maternity leave as well, @FiancB.
We have no plans to TTA with regard to my work, and I'm kindof wondering if it would be really crappy of me to apply for a part-time position if I were already pregnant?
Career: I'm a Registered Nurse, applying for part-time ED shifts in the next few months
Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Infectious disease & violent patients (for my safety), and OB patients who are experiencing complications/loss (for them). But I'm ready to work 12s up until the day labor starts.
How much time will you take off? As much as I can get and still go back part time. It would be a different story were I working full time.
When will you tell colleagues/ boss/ staff? I would probably tell my boss & charge nurses (& triage, whoever is sending patients to me) around 8 weeks. If I am having trouble with being pukey or with certain patients, probably sooner.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? Most likely not, especially if I'm only working P/T.

Yes. Be open with your charge nurses. I'm a charge nurse and someone came and told me. She had just found out and hasn't told anyone except her husband. She was assigned to a patient with tuberculosis. I wasn't going to tell anyone but we as nurses look out for each other. With me knowing i could silently give her appropriate assignments. I can just take the blame for it. Nurses are good to each other and have each others back. I don't worry about telling certain ones too soon. But me being a charge i can just not assign myself patients with serious illnesses or combativness.
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Some days I have to be in court on my feet for hours at a time. So we will see how that pans out, but I am not really worried.
How much time will you take off? As much time as possible...the way it works out I get about 14 weeks at 2/3rds pay plus an additional 6 weeks unpaid (but I can use sick/vacation time - and I have been racking them up! so I should get paid fully for the last 6 weeks).
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? As late as possible...but with fear of morning sickness it might have to be sooner.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? Sigh, I really wish I could but its not in the cards financially for us. But you never know, if something were to drastically change, I would love to!
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Sometimes. I'm based in an elementary school and typically pick up all of my kids myself for counseling but I can always call them to my office more. Sometimes I worry about my mental capacity and if I will have the mental energy to really give them the focus and attention they need from me. There is also pressure to see a certain amount of students, I worry I won't have the energy.
How much time will you take off? At least 3 months, more if possible. Depends on how much time in comfortable taking unpaid.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? Not sure! Definitely would like to hold out as much as I can, at least until after 1st Tri.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while?
I would love to! But not 100% sure we can swing it financially. If I have to go back, I would like to go back just part time.
Career: I am a property manager in multifamily housing
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? there are some maintenance aspects of my job that I will need to avoid. No more messing with paint or pool chemicals or heavy lifting when I'm ktfu.
How much time will you take off? At most 8 weeks. As of right now, I do not have someone that can fill my role so ideally I would like to work from home for some of it.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? the plan is to wait as long as possible. I will need to start training someone to look over the property if possible so I won't be able to hide it for as long as I'd like. Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while ? nope! We decided husby will stay home and I am working my ass off to make it a realty.

Do you worry that certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? Other than 12 hour shifts, stress and infectious patients, my main worry is on my blood sugars. I'm a Type 1 Diabetic and wear an insulin pump/continuous glucose monitor, and I do great on my days off. But when I'm working, I can't check my sugar as frequently or pay attention to where my numbers are at. I worry that they will go out of range and make it dangerous for the baby.
How much time will you take off? We have short term disability, FMLA and PTO. I'd like as much time as possible off. Since I'm already high-risk, I've had to consider the possibility of stopping work much sooner than most pregnant women. I'd really love to save it all for afterwards - to breastfeed and try to control crazy blood sugar related things with that!
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? I will tell my charge nurses as soon as I find out so they can avoid contagious assignments or extremely combative patients. We look out for each other. My manager, however, I want her to know as far along as I can get. But I will need to make her aware in a timely fashion to prepare for the difficulties of the third trimester/blood sugar control.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? Yes Yes Yes Yes Yesssssssssss I wish. We have this awesome thing called 2 Day full time .. And I want to be on that special list so bad. Having that one extra day off gives you so much more breathing room to think and get your life in order! But I would ultimately like to be a SAHM full time. We can manage it now without paying extra on our debts, but we want to pay down those ASAP, so I"ll work longer.

Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? not really, small issues with lifting but most of it isn't that heavy, long hours on my feet won't be great.
How much time will you take off? I will take 12 weeks I don't qualify for paid leave as I am only casually employed, but it means I can take as much time as I want off.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? We are all pretty close so I have no reason not to tell them at 12 weeks.

Career: I am an office manager for a multi-office dental practice
Do you worry that's certain aspects of your job will be a worry whilst pregnant? I spend most of my day sitting, so not really the job. Maybe the hours cause I work 11-12 hour days.
How much time will you take off? In the state of PA I am allowed 12 weeks, so I will probably take all 12.
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff? I am close with my boss and co-managers, but honestly I think I will wait to tell them as long as possible unless it can be avoided. Minimum will be 12 weeks, Ideally 16 weeks. My boss doesn't want kids, so I don't feel she will understand the situation at all and my coworkers are huge gossips so I'd like it to keep my business mine as long as possible. I might tell one coworker who I am closer with a little sooner, but I'll have to see how I am feeling if/when the situation presents itself.
Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while? I would love to, but unfortunately I make a lot more money then DH, so being a SAHM is sort of unrealistic for us unless DH gets a major pay bump.
Re: Slightly off topic.....

Stress. I'm an Executive Assistant to the President and Board of Trustees so I am in more of a "project manager" role and it can get insane.
how much time will you take off?
I plan on quitting instead of going on Maternity leave
When will you tell colleagues/boss/staff

Married: 04/05/15

Prior to being a SAHW due to my husbands carrier moving us all over the darn place, I was a child development specialist in a shelter.

Some days I have to be in court on my feet for hours at a time. So we will see how that pans out, but I am not really worried.

Will you decide to be a stay at home parent for a while?
I stayed home with DS for 2yrs, I loved it, I may stay on at work 1 day a week to get out of the house, but I only work for adult conversation, not because we need the income.
