November 2016 Moms

What do you do to fill your time?

I hope no one minds the threads I've started; I am just trying to get to know people and it's fun to have threads to discuss bigger topics.

Do you work, study, live the life of a full time domestic goddess?

I'm a medical student (first year of an accelerated 3 year program so I'll graduate in 2018) looking to become a rural family doctor, but I do have some interest in emergency medicine and obstetrics.

Re: What do you do to fill your time?

  • I like the GTKY threads. :)
I'm an occupational therapist at a skilled nursing facility. I work full time. Planning to remain working, although might drop to part-time.

@KilgraveMadeMeDoIt medical school is no joke. My brother is going through it right now, he's in his first year as well but it isn't an accelerated program. Good luck to you with all your studies!

  • I'm a SAHM to two toddler boys. I was going to nursing school but we were barely affording daycare so we decided I put it on hold until we are done having kids and they are all in school.

@peachykeen17 I love OTs. You guys do so much! Totally admire the work OTs do to make it possible for people to reclaim is much more of their lives than they might otherwise be able to. As to med school, my program is a bit atypical and I'm not nearly as stressed out as my peers at more traditional schools tend to be. Other schools are adopting parts of our model because it still makes great clinicians without the near torture that medical school sometimes is. Good luck to your brother!

@evilgreencows5 I put off school for some years too, and honestly the wait made it all the sweeter once I was able to do it. Being a SAHM is hard work too!

  • I'm an administrator at a online college full time.  I'd like to drop a day a week when I go back but it's unlikely to be approved so I'll probably be going back full time but after a 15 week mat leave.  I'm also an adjunct instructor in interpersonal communications.  And I'm raising a 3 1/2 year old smarty pants little girl who is more like her mother than I'd like to admit.

I always wanted to be a SAHM but in reality we 1.) Can't afford it and 2.) I don't think I'd love it so much - I really like my job(s)!
  • @KS070508 Nothing wrong with enjoying working. It sounds like you have some mentally stimulating work.

I do!  I handle all of the student appeals and disciplinary stuff.  I do a lot of investigating and then present my findings at a weekly meeting with the school leadership where they dole out consequences.  It sounds horrid but I actually really like it!
  • I'm an interface analyst, but my passion is hiking! Hiking is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "what do you do with your time." We had a beautiful day - got 11 miles in :)

  • I'm a public school music teacher and mom to an almost 2 year old. I don't have much free time, lol. My husband works a lot (CPA, so it's a miracle he was even home enough to knock me up this month!)

We love hiking too! Although H recently hurt his back so we're doing a lot less of it these days.

I'm a tax analyst at a large banking firm and I hate my job. I used to like it back when I had a working brain, but then I got pregnant the first time and it all went to hell lol. BUT my job is fantastic in that I can work from home 3 days a week and work 7-3 so I miss all the traffic. The maternity leave policy is also pretty sweet, which is why I will quit after I use that.

I can't wait to be a SAHM, especially since mh is home often so we'll be able to spend a lot of time together :)

  • I work full time as a social worker/case manager in a hospital. When I'm not working, I'm chasing around my 14 month old son.
  • I am a WAHM.  I take care of my almost 2 year old and own a fitness business with my DH.  I do most of the planning, books, equipment ordering etc.

  • I'm an engineer working for a construction management firm (think budgets and schedules).

@kns1988 I was starting to plan a week or two on the AT at the end of May this year, but I'll be putting that off for now.  Cheers to other hikers!

    Nov16 Siggy Challenge:

  • What's an interface analyst?

I stay home with my 2.5yo son. Prior to that, I was a tax analyst at a large food/beverage company. I took 3 months off after Jay was born, worked 4 months and then quit, so I hear ya on the brain dead part, Nauticallife! I don't miss my job in the least but I miss the social aspect of it... but I lost that anyway because we moved right after Jay was born so I was working remotely 100% of the time.
  • I work in childcare, in the toddler room. I'd love to be a SAHM but it's not really an option so I'm hoping to open a mini daycare from my home where I could care for up to 5 children including my own. I still have to look into it to see how it all works but I'm pretty hopeful.
    I'm 34, SO 39
    TTC since July 2015
Unexplained infertility - delayed/weak ovulation but don't know why
BFP Feb 2016 MC at 6.5 weeks
    Started Clomid November 2016
BFP March 2017 (third cycle on Clomid) HCG failed to rise, MC at 6 weeks.
IUI July 2017 BFP which turned out to be CP
    IVF scheduled for Feb 2018

  • I am a nurse working full time at a hospital's ob/gyn outpatient clinic. When I am not working I spend most of my time with my little family, which includes my two year old son, and husband.
  • I'm a SAHM to a 2 year old son.  I worked as a bank manager before he was born and I don't miss it at all.
  • angieandjames - interfaces are what gets information (labs, xrays, etc) from one system to another in the electronic medical record world.

UTAmbs11 - my dream is to hike the whole AT! H said if we didn't have a baby in 2 years, I should quit my job and do it.. haha the baby trumps it, though. Are you not planning on doing any backpacking while pregnant? I'm trying to figure out how long I can keep doing it.

  • I am a nurse in a pediatric intensive care unit. About a year after my daughter was born, I dropped to half time and I love the balance between being home and still doing a job that I love!

  • I am currently an RN at a paediatric hospital. I work in infectious diseases and general paediatrics, so I see a little bit of everything. I'm not 100% certain on my plans after our little arrives...ideally I'd like to find a more regular schedule job (like a clinic) that doesn't involve an hour long commute (I currently work 12h days/nights with a 1hr commute each way). If that doesn't work out, I'll likely go back part time while I look for something more ideal closer to home.

As for actual free time, I read a lot, run, do yoga and I recently started crocheting (I may be slightly obsessed with making baby stuff...)

  • I am a teacher. I have only been able to get one-year contracts so far and have already been told that I will not be renewed for next year. As I will, if all goes well, be 7 months pregnant in September, I am a lot less stressed about that than I used to be.
  • I work full time at a governmental engineering office (I am not an engineer), I am a full time graduate student (I graduate in May, woop woop), and I have a husband and 3 year old.  All of those things combined do not allow for a lot of free time but when I find some I usually take a nap!

  • I'm a SAHM to 3 boys and a girl. In the very little free time that I manage to stumble upon I knit. @comealongponds I know what you mean about making baby stuff. I just make multiples of stuff in different colors and put them aside. Whatever I don't use for my own babies, I give as gifts at baby showers.
  • I'm a school psychologist, and I have an 8 year old daughter and a beautiful wife!
  • I work for Chicago Fire Department. Luckily we have good maternity leave and somewhere between 12-20 weeks I will go on medical leave and be at home with my full salary (thank god)
  • I am a project manager, and have a 10 month old, and a furbaby. I fill my time with work, keeping the house, raising my son and keeping my furbaby alive and well, oh and being a wifey too. #notenoughtimeintheday

I'm a clinical research coordinator (mostly pharmaceutical clinical trials) at a university. I have a 1.5 hour commute so I'm mostly on here while I ride the train. In the summer I really enjoy gardening. We bought a house last year with an awesome yard and grew a ton of veggies, herbs, and hops*, and I hope to have an even better garden this summer. My husband actually does more of the gardening than I do, because he's home more often (I have weekend duty).
    *we also brew beer.
