nap routine

Re: nap routine

  • My son is about 17 weeks old. I literally just started this routine recently because he's hitting the 4 month sleep regression and it was ugly for a couple weeks there, but I think this schedule is working pretty good for him so here's what I do:

I try to wake up between 8-9 in the morning. Nap from 11-12:30 (not those exact times always and not that long always, but that's the goal) and another nap from 3-4:30. Then down for bed between 7-7:30 at night. Then he'll wake up once or twice to eat at night. When my son is over tired, he is a hot mess honestly and it takes him forever to settle down. So now the second I see an eye rub or a yawn - I swaddle him, bounce him a little bit, turn on his white noise machine, lay him in the crib, and turn on the mobile for him to watch. Sometimes he falls asleep quickly, other times I end up having to pick him back up and do more bouncing and try again. I try to put him down before he's asleep so he'll learn to self soothe but other times I just bounce him to sleep and put him down after I can tell he's in a deep sleep. He does nap and sleep in his crib, his crib is in my room though and probably will be for a while.

Basically just try to find a routine that works for you and don't stop trying. I'm not saying let your kid cry it out (because I can't do that but to each their own), I just mean don't give up. It'll be worth it once these babies can sleep long periods and nap well! I know some people say that letting your baby cry it out for 15 minutes, then checking on them, then crying it out 15 more minutes, and then pick them up and feed them if they've not fell asleep yet. I haven't tried that but some people seem really into it!
