Prometrium?

I went in today (CD 11) for an ultrasound after my 3rd round of Letrozole. The nurse prescribed Prometrium starting this Sunday (CD 15). I'm not sure why she would prescribe it as it doesn't seem like I have any issues with my luteal phase, although I do have a blood test to check my progesterone next Friday. I just feel a little confused.

It was a tough appointment as (I might be reading too much into this) I got the impression that the nurse wasn't overly optimistic about my chances with Letrozole and was moving toward more tests/other treatment options... As I've mentioned before we won't be pursuing IUI or IVF so I'm a little nervous....

Re: Prometrium?

  • I think she may actually be wanting to give you the best chances possible with your current treatment, especially if you're not going to be pursuing IUI or IVF. I had some spotting for my first cycle with letrozole, and so I was prescribed prometrium for every cycle after that, just to be safe. It's pretty common for people to be prescribed Prometrium too.
  • I agree; I think she is trying to give you the best chances possible! I called my RE and asked for a progesterone supplement after first IUI, and he wouldn't prescribe it, but that IUI failed. This cycle, he is already planning to prescribe one. I would be thankful for it!

  • I take prometrium for my TWW each cycle, with timed intercourse. My RE said it's just an extra boost/precaution, since my numbers have always been fine too. :)

Ok, thanks everyone :) This morning's visit to the RE was really overwhelming, and I guess I didn't ask all the questions I should have. I feel like for the first time this cycle the mood is less optimistic which really upset me. But hopefully the promethium helps!

ETA: My period always comes 14 days after I ovulate (medicated) or get ovulation symptoms (unmedicated) so I'm thinking this is just a precaution -- if I had LP problems wouldn't I AF start earlier, or wouldn't I spot earlier?

  • A lot of REs put you on progesterone to help support a pregnancy if you get a bfp. I would take them! if you get a bfp, you continue the progesterone for most of the first trimester.

  • My RE's office puts everyone on progesterone as standard. I've been on it for each of my previous 3 IUI's, starting the day after and will be on it during my first IVF cycle as well.
