LO and Uncle with the same name?

MH and I are stuck on boy names. We both adore my BILs name and it's been the plan for ages, but it suddenly occurred to me that although the middle names would be different, since it's MHs brother, LO would have the same first and last name as his uncle. I don't like that. MH doesn't think it's a big deal. We haven't come up with any other boy names that we can agree on (MH is a one-man veto machine). If it makes a difference, we live in a different country from my BIL but they would still see each other once or twice a year. So what do you think? Is it okay for LO to have the same name as his uncle?

  • I think it's fine to share names although it will appear to many your LO is named after him so if that bothers you I would think twice

  • @bbiutmcph Thanks. I wouldn't mind if people thought LO was named after him. It was mostly when I said the name out loud and was like, wait a minute, there already is a "Bob Jones*"..... future Uncle Bob*!

    *not the name :)
  • Hi @Paturkey!!!! I must have missed your announcement. Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!

  • @gonetothesea Awe, thanks so much!

@LizaKate1213 That is a great point. I know he wants to have kids and doubt he'd go the junior route but worth asking if it gets down to it!

  • My family has that exact situation. Occasionally there is confusion but since we're rarely all together it's not an issue. My nephew thinks sharing his uncle's name is fun.
  • Will it be the same first name and last name? Are you picking a different name? Can your LO go by a different nickname?

While I think its fine, I would still try to find another name you can agree on.

  • My husband and nephew have the same first and last name. He's not named after him, he's named after the mother's father. It's really not a big deal.

  • @Sarcasm101 It would be the same first and last names, different middle name. It's not a name that lends itself much to nicknames. I'm inclined to keep looking, we just haven't had any luck yet.

    Thanks for your feedback everyone!
  • If you are still looking, and interested you could post the name along with some others you kind of like and maybe someone here would have a suggestion that would spark your interest.

    @bbiutmcph Thank you for offering!

The name: Julian (nn Jul or Jules if any)

Last name starts with R and is only one syllable, so no R or short names. We prefer family names but they've mostly all been vetoed.
Names that are vetoed for various reasons are:
Milo, Louis (Louie), Frederick (Freddie), Felix (GP name for sure), Theo
Under consideration only because MH didn't immediately veto them but not sold (family names): Bennett and Everett

ETA: we live in the UK if that matters to any of you for name purposes
  • So many excellent names listed! I love love love Julian.

    Suggesting:

    edmund or Edward
    warren
    Benedict
    Franklin
    walter
    vincent or Victor
    micah

    Arthur
    Judah
    Jonas

  • I've grown up with this situation on both sides of my family. One of my cousins is John and I have an uncle John; my dad is Michael, I have an uncle Michael and he named his first son Michael. All different last names though, but it worked fine. I think with large families, like mine, or with popular names, it's more likely to happen and that's okay.
  • Love Julian! It's our top choice if this baby is a boy.

Some people use Jude as a nickname for Julian.

We're also considering Adrian, Sebastian, and Gabriel.

  • This was so interesting; I expected a lot higher percentage to disapprove. I love so many names on your list @bbuitmcph but the only ones DH will consider are Arthur and Thomas. Thanks so much!

It also led to a discussion about the fact that my BIL would be very flattered to have his nephew named after him so I said, "Yeah, I love that [niece] has my name." To which MH replied, "Wait a minute! She has your exact name!" And I was like, "Well yeah, my maiden name but I didn't use that name anymore when she was born." Well, it turns out I'm a total moron because my maiden first and last name is the same as my grandmother's married name, which is the same as my niece's maiden name. We all go by very different nicknames (starting with P, D and M), but the fact remains that apparently I'm a big ole hypocrite for objecting to LO and his uncle sharing a name. So at least for now it appears Julian is back in as our boy name. :)

    Thanks again for the help!!
  • I see no problem with it, but I come from a family where a lot of people are named after each other, and end up sharing a first and last name. Including one grandpa, dad, and daughter that all have the same first name and last name.
