Green poops/Miserable Baby

I tried searching for this but didn't see a similar post. I apologize in advance for the length, I'm just desperate. Over the past week DS has been having mostly green poops: he usually has 2-3 poops a day and that hasn't changed. They're not frothey or mucus-y that I've noticed, but my once happy baby has turned into a miserable one. He cries so much during the day. I'm not used to this so I've been having my own meltdowns because of it. I've done some googling, and I've seen its more than likely a problem of him getting much foremilk while nursing. He doesn't seem to be in pain while eating, no arching of the back, etc. I'm pretty sure he also has a mixture of teething at the same time as well. I've read block feeding can be helpful, but can also reduce your supply, and I'm worried if that happens I may not get it back or it will take a long time too. I gave him a few bottles of expressed milk yesterday and he was in a better mood for most of the day but got cranky towards the late afternoon.

I know most think dairy intolerance from my diet, but my readings suggest that it's most likely the lactose from all the foremilk he may be getting, which could be confused for dairy intolerance.

Has anyone else experienced this? It got to the point last night of him screaming for an hour I almost made him a bottle of formula to see if it helped, which I don't want to do :( I'm even wondering if maybe I should start just exclusively pumping? I don't know anymore. I just need help!

Re: Green poops/Miserable Baby

  • C had problems gaining weight at first, so the nurses suggested pumping for 5 minutes before feeding her so she got more of the hindmilk instead of the foremilk.  Maybe worth a try in your situation to see if that makes your LO happier.
If you do try block feeding you can pump the other side if you are worried about supply.  C usually only takes one breast per feed and eats every 3 hours, so we basically block feed all the time.  It has not hurt my supply .

  • Exact what PP said.  I EP, but it sounds like either pumping first so your lo can get more hind milk, or block feeding and pumping the other side to prevent loss of supply are a good place to start.  It can't hurt to at least call your ped's office and see if they have any recommendations, either.

  • That's what I was thinking, but then do I just dump what I pumped out? He eats constantly, I'm lucky if I can make it a whole hour without feeding him. So I'm thinking maybe because of the foremilk being so watery, that may be why....

  • The nurses told me to freeze my foremilk "just in case".  It is still in my freezer.  You could use it for cereal when your LO starts solids.
Since he eats that often I would definitely try block feeding.

  • We block feed. If your LO is eating about every hour I don't think block feeding will hurt your supply.

Foremilk is more of a drink and hind milk is more like a meal, so chances are good you're right about why he's eating so frequently.

As far as block feeding hurting your supply goes, you will probably have to try it and see. DS1 only took one side at a time pretty much from birth, and I didn't have supply issues with him. So, it doesn't always hurt supply, but since every mom and baby is different, I think trial and error is the best way to get your answer. GL!

I block feed due to oversupply, and though my supply has diminished a bit from when It was super huge, I still have plenty of milk.  I feed only one side at a time, and if she is hungry again in an hour or less, I feed the same side again.
  • I block fed with my daughter and never had a supply issue. I occasionally do it now although DS doesn't seem to have the same issues she did.
