Weird belly sleeping/nusing thing

So, DD has decided that nursing on her belly is awesome. I'm a little nervous about ear infections (as she falls asleep nursing on her belly all the time now) but mostly I am just perplexed as to why she does this.

Of course I flip her over when I go to bed at night and can get her to stay on her back. Most naps, however, are on her stomach even if she fell asleep on her back.

I assume it is some developmental thing as she is way into learning to crawl and falls asleep nursing on her belly and kicking and pushing up with her legs. I noticed several of you other moms had their LOs turn into belly sleepers around 4-5 months. But I couldn't find anything in my baby books or with Dr. Google on babies nursing on their bellies.

Now she will just ask for milk on her belly if we are hanging out on the bed or floor together or she will cry if I try to nurse her side lying on her back or side for a nap until I flip her or allow her to roll but that is not how it began. We would start out side lying and then she pushed or rolled into on me and fussed (my boob still in her mouth) until I backed off so she could roll over towards me (at this point my breast would fall out and she would cry until we re-latched in this position, me on my side or back and she on her front) and then she would lay down and turn her head to nurse and other times she would be propped up on her elbows and I on my back holding my boob for her. Sometimes if she is nursing in my lap she will try to roll over. It is frustrating to get it right the way she wants to do it but changing her mind and forcing her to nurse in a conventional position just pisses her off.

Am I the only one with a contortionist baby?

You're not alone! My LO does it too. He tries to practice crawling while nursing, ends up pushing himself backwards and tries to latch on to my belly. Then he gets angry when that doesnt work lol I just have to keep pulling him back up to my boob. It doesnt happen at every feeding, but when he decides that is what he wants to do he flips out if I try to keep him on his side.

emd886 - glad to know I'm not alone. I am surprised no one else on the internet is curious enough about this phenomenon that I couldn't find any discussions through Google search? I guess it is rare. After about a week, DD seems to have chilled out and only wants it sometimes and not all of the time. She still rolls onto her belly during naps though, but that is common enough. She is way into practicing crawling and given your story it seems that they are just ambitious heavy trainers!

DC2London - I searched google for the nursing position you mentioned and couldn't find anything there either. Google is failing me lately I think she is just too busy wanting to crawl that she can't be bothered to stop and eat over it. She often falls asleep pushing her legs against my thigh, the bed, whatever is on the bed, etc. in a hoping up and down motion so I think she is just willing to sacrifice comfort for her baby squats. :-??
