Breastfeeding and Weight Loss

Okay, I did a search before posting and didn't see much, but forgive me if I'm missing an existing discussion on this!

My baby is 6 weeks old and I've been breastfeeding and pumping exclusively for him, and I'm waiting on this supposed weight loss with breastfeeding to kick in!

I lost 20 just after getting home from
the hospital but nothing since then. I have 20 to go and I'm thinking I probably need to go to the gym at this point. Drats!

Anyone experiencing weight loss from feeding alone?

Re: Breastfeeding and Weight Loss

  • I am only BF and pumping and DD is 3 weeks old, I lost all 30lbs. I never lost everything from my DSs so I am hoping I do. I BF my first DS for 2 months and hardly lost any weight while BFing. Didn't lose weight until I started going to the gym with him. Good luck!

  • I'm in the same boat. DS IS 7 weeks and I have 27 left( gained50) and I'm EP. I PUMP 45-50 oz a day so I should  be losing more. I just started lightly working out this week. I lost it all with my first after 9 months(ff her) so I'm up for the challenge. I just hoped that bf would be magic
  • BF'ing was no magic weight loss trick for me with DS1. After the initial weight loss in the first few days (15ish lbs), I didn't lose the babyweight until I started hitting the gym hard and getting serious about healthy eating (which was about 6 months PP). He was 8 months old before I got back to prepreg weight, I had gained 32 lbs that pregnancy & breastfed him to a year. This time, I worked out the entire pregnancy & only gained 18 lbs. Was back to prepreg weight at 2 weeks PP, I attribute that entirely to the fact that I didn't gain any extra weight & not to BF'ing. I'd still like to lose another 15 lbs so I'm back to exercising and taking my healthy eating serious much earlier this time. I was so disappointed that BF'ing wasn't a magic weight loss trick for me
  • Breastfeeding (and eating less) did a lot for me the first four weeks, but after losing about 30lbs the loss started to level off. I have about 15 more pounds to lose, and figure exercising and a healthy diet is what will get me there.

  • I'm 11lbs under my prepregnancy weight at 3 weeks pp. but I haven't lost any weight in more than a week.
  • I needed this post. I'm still flabby and have 20 lbs to go. I thought something was wrong. Guess I just need patience. (And to get cleared by the doctor to work out)
  • I lost 30 lbs before the 2 week mark. I haven't lost since. I was losing weight before pregnancy and would like to continue. Once I get cleared, my plan is exercise and watching calories. I know you aren't supposed to count, but I like having the app because I can see ratios of carb/fat/protein.
  • I gained almost 40lbs. I was a pounds under my prepregnancy weight 2 weeks pp. It was scary how fast the weight came off. But looking back, I don't think I was eating nearly as much as I should have been. I've gained a couple pounds back since then, but still maintaining.

  • How the heck are people losing weight so fast!? I gained about 35lbs. I just went to my post partum check up at 6 weeks and I have about 17lbs left to lose. I'm EP and feel like a barely have time to eat, although what I have been eating could be much healthier. I'm shocked that I haven't lost more.

I don't know about all you other ladies, but I feel more hungry now EBF than I ever did pregnant!! It's so crazy, I thought that would go away but I guess not. I lost 30lb initially but haven't lost anymore since. It's only been 3 weeks so I'm just being patient and enjoying my little love!!
Yessss my breakfast was two packets of oatmeal, a banana, and followed by an apple. Surely one of those things should fill me but I was still hungry!
  • I lost 31lbs (I gained 50) and my baby is 3 weeks. I mainly pump and breastfeed sometimes since baby and I got off to a bad start and she still has a really hard time with it. But I could set stand to tone up. I need to be in the gym soon.
  • Gah! I am a month out and haven't even lost 15 pounds! Rude.
  • I've lost about 1/2 of my pregnancy weight the first few weeks. Now I'm stuck. Trying to be optimistic though because I was at my smallest at 3-4 mo pp. We shall see!

With DD a lost all 60 lbs within the first 3 months pp, but at 6 months when I stopped bf  I gained 25lb back.  With DS I gained 20 and have lost it all 4 weeks pp. I believe the research says that women who lose the weight rapidly tend to gain some back, which was true in my case. This time around I'm focusing on my diet and recently started to exercise.
Edit because half my post got deleted.
  • I gained 45 lbs during my pregnancy and still have 17 to lose to get back to pre pregnancy weight.  EBF at 7 weeks pp, and without exercising besides walking I've been losing about half a pound to a pound per week over the last couple weeks (was faster weight loss first couple weeks pp) I'm hoping it continues just from BF'ing and eating healthier because it's hard to fit in exercise! Plus then can only hope for better results once I do work that in.
  • I am part of a FB group for new moms that are nursing (and also welcome to those who are not).  Since it isn't proper Bump protocol for me to post group name on this board if you PM me I will be happy to add you :).  My son is 6 weeks old, I gained 50 pounds and I have 15 pounds left to get rid of before I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight.  This group is incredibly helpful and supportive to me, so that's why I thought I would just throw it out there to you guys ;).  Also, I haven't been working out yet... Plan to start that next week ;).

I lost 25lbs right off the bat! Then I noticed that I was stuck at that 25lb loss, and nothing else was coming off. I'm now at 27lbs lost, and have 10 more to go to be at my pre pregnancy weight.  I'm 7 weeks pp and nothing is working. So working out must be the secret that everyone leaves out when they say it all falls off when breastfeeding, becaus that's not what's happening with me.  :/
  • I gained 60 pounds and have lost 70 at 5 weeks PP. And I only pumped two weeks. It's different for everyone. (:
  • Does anyone know if my fitbit counts breastfeeding calories or do I need to add that in? I tried adding it but it seems like a ridiculous amount of daily calories if I do and if that was the case I should be losing a lot more than I am!

I read on the Fitbit FAQ that you have to add it in as a manual activity, even if you have it on your profile on the website.
I agree, my calorie burn is supposedly ridiculous! But only a slow (but steady, I guess) weight loss.
  • I gained 35 and have lost 22 so far at 3 weeks pp.  I was a little under weight before getting pregnant, so I'm not sure I'll ever make it all the way down to my pre pregnancy weight, but I feel I'm already close to being able to fit into my regular clothes, so I'm happy with that.
  • How many pounds do you think should be accounted for enlarged breasts from breastfeeding? I am trying to set my goal weight and I don't think PP weight is realistic given my boobs are huge- that must make a difference.

  • I'm in the same boat as most - struggling with the last 15.  Just wanted to reiterate the comment that I am 1000x more hungry while BF than I ever was pregnant.
  • @happyandhopeful3 I always wonder the same thing because my boobs are very engorged and heavy. I always want to weigh them lol.
