Cloth diapering?

Who here has previously or plans to cloth diaper? I am 99% sure I want to. I have a few friends who do and they love it.

Re: Cloth diapering?

  • I'd love to but am unsure whether my #1 choice daycare will accommodate them and I'd totally go disposable just to get into their awesome program.

Used cloth nappies on DS and they have been stored for child number 2. Can't wait to get my newborn stash out again.
  • Me! Me! I started CDing DS when he was 6 months. I plan to start earlier with this LO. Probably when we get home from the hospital or when the umbilical cord falls off.

My best advice is to: start with a small stash and figure out what you like and what fits your baby best. And for the love of all things holy, do not do not do not follow the manufacturer's washing/detergent instructions. They are AWFUL. You will have stink, staining and rashes and be so frustrated you will want to quit. Join Fluff Love and CD Science on Facebook and check out their website. They are amazing and saved me from quitting cloth. (I realize that not following the manufacturer's washing instructions will void the warranty, but I'd rather have clean diapers, a rash free baby and zero warranty than stinky diapers, a miserable baby and a warranty)

A lot of daycares will go for AIOs because they're really similar to disposables. But, at the same time, they won't rinse out any poop, so if you're dealing with non-EBF poop, that can be kinda crappy. (See what I did, there?)

  • Went disposable with DD, but probably going to do some combination of cloth and disposables with this LO. We have friends who do cloth so I have a good resource to help me through the confusing parts. We'll have disposables on hand for visiting at Grandma's, etc... but my hope is to mainly go cloth.

  • I want to, but getting DH on board will be my struggle. We'll see what I can do regarding that.
  • @br0co1ii Show him some AIOs and tell him they're pretty much the same as disposables. And if he's worried about touching poop that's silly. You're going to get poop on your hands no matter what kind of diaper you use. And show him these:

  • Yay! I'm excited to have other moms to learn from while learning about cloth! From what I've read/heard from friends, I think I'll use disposable diapers until the baby can fit into the regular size cloths. I don't want to spend money on newborn size when I don't think they will be used long enough to make it worth it. Plus I can see myself getting really overwhelmed trying to adjust to life with  newborn and dealing with cloth diapers from day 1.

  • We do cloth at home and disposables on the go. I can't commit to carrying poop around in my car. But I do love them! We did DD from about 8 pounds (4-ish months for her) and will do our next as soon as they fit well. :)
  • nope, disposable all the way here. My mom works at a hospital and gets me my diapers for free, so that's pretty hard to pass up!
  • @PeggyOlsonFTW  thanks! My SIL used them with her 4 kids, and he saw how the process worked. I think he is just  anti "anything that is supposed to be good for the planet" which is totally obnoxious. He has a lot of good qualities, but sometimes he can be so obtuse. I'll have to use the angle that if I can get hand me downs, it'll be cheaper. He's ridiculously frugal.
  • @br0co1ii If he's frugal, make sure you tell him how much cheaper they are than disposables, you can buy them second hand for even cheaper, you can use them for more than one baby and you can resell them when you're done. Know what my diapering costs are gonna be for #2? $0. (Unless I decide to buy newborn fluff after he/she is born)

I know lots of people say your water/electricity bills will go up and then it's not cheaper and not better for the environment, but if you wash correctly (i.e. according to Fluff Love and not manufacturers), you don't use a ton of water/electricity and it is still cheaper.

You can even go one step further and make your own cloth wipes (that's what we did!) to save even more money.

  • I am a cloth diaper dropout. I loved it but, my downfall was my stash was not big enough so, I was washing every day. I think my other issue was, 6 months hit and we had massive leaks and I became frustrated. I'm going to try again though.
  • I wanted to with DD but it seemed overwhelming. Thinking about it for this LO but not 100% dedicated to it yet.

Surprisingly, a lot of daycares in my area won't even amuse the notion.  My sister's daycare is one of them that thinks it's "too much hassle".  I don't get it.  But the cost of living is really low out here so I manage even when they're behind the times.  ;)

  • I really, really want to use cloth diapers. DH is on board but from what I can tell my top 2 daycare choices won't do cloth which is such a bummer! Friends who used cloth on one baby and disposable on another rave about how much quicker potty training was with the cloth diapered baby. I suppose we can go th hybrid route that a few of you have mentioned.
  • We plan to cloth diaper. DH isn't totally gung-ho on the idea, but he's willing to give it a try. I plan to get covers and prefolds as well as some pockets that DH, day care, and babysitters can use to be more "friendly". I'm looking at the Rumparooz one size. Even though the company is pretty much the devil, the design looks excellent.

  • Oh if we're talking brands... I LOVE Thirsties! Their covers come in two sizes, so you have to buy more covers to last until potty training, but the fit is much better with far fewer leaks than the brands I bought that were "one size." Plus they have super cute prints out right now! We prefer prefolds for the price and the ability to adjust the fit. :)
  • I exclusively cloth diapered DS until he was about 1.5 with the exception of traveling. Now it's cloth on weekends and sposies at nursery since we commute on the Tube and no way am I spending an hour with diaper stank on the train. With this LO I will definitely cloth through the wonderful no solids days. It's so nice to not rinse diapers! I use prefolds and covers for the early days and they're not expensive and really easy!
  • With DS we used Honest Diapers. I'm mostly sure I want to CD for Number Two, but I don't know if I'll be able to do it 100%. If anything we'll CD most of the time but have disposables should there be a situation where we cant CD.

Seriously... the amount of waste from regular diapers is pretty horrific. Also the average baby will go through 2,400 diapers in his/her 1st year of life. Its CRAZY.

  • We use cloth with DS and will with the next. We will wait till the new baby fits in our BG 4.0s before we start. I think that was around 6 weeks for DS. I love the money saving factor, especially since the majority of our stash was a baby shower present!

There was a very minimal increase to our water and electricity cost by doing wash more frequently. So it really is a great cost savings. Plus I feel it's better for the environment. Around here in Portland, OR. Many people cloth diaper so I have never heard of a day care not working with the parents when it came to cloth diapers.

I have tried a few other brands of diapers and very much prefer bum genius 4.0s. They are pockets which I also like. At night we stuff them with one layer of microfiber cloth and a layer of charcoal bamboo cloth.

  • We use cloth with DD and definitely will with the next one. I LOVE it. My husband loves it. DD is 2 and has never had a diaper rash.
We use Bum Genius 4.0 (pockets).  I actually bought most of our stash used.

After my DH saw the money we would save, he was on board.

We have cd'd both the babies and will be with this nugget.  I exclusively use pocket diapers though and am currently redoing the elastic (suuuucks) but I love them.  We use disposables for the first two months though because I'm not a fan of leaving poo in the dipes overnight and I'll be damned if I'm getting out of bed to wash out a diaper.

  • I have always wanted to use cloth diapers, but now that we have decided that this will be our only baby, I'm not sure if I want to bother doing all the research since I'm clueless when it comes to cloth diapers. If we were planning to have another, I would definitely do it. But I may just go with Honest diapers....

  • We have been for 19 months now. Love my diapers. My in laws pay for disposables for their house and he can take them off now. My diapers stay on!

How close is the laundry mat? Depending on how you store the used ones a you could wash once a week. But that would require a large stash. If it were me, I wouldn't bother.

  • We do with DS and will with the new baby as well. We do Clotheez prefolds with Thirsties duo wrap covers. I may do all in ones after the newborn phase but will stick with natural fibers because I'm afraid of microfiber stink. Obviously many people love the stay dry materials but I have never run into the washing issues that I always hear about. It is probably partially luck but I do think wash routines are easier to sort out with natural fibers.

  • Tried it, failed it haha. DH wasn't on board, DS was pooping out of them and I just hate long routine of diaper laundry. I've still got them packed away and I might give it another shot on newbie. I also hate those "bum circle" pants with a passion and with a  short legged baby, sizing up jeans to fit cloth wasn't an option.

It's not far, in our development, but not always available at the convenient times when I could go alone and not drag the kids (like after work when my husband is home). It can be a hassle on good days, so I guess I won't be CD.

If you really want to CD but cost isn't your big issue, you could look into a diapering service. They deliver and pick up to you--no laundry! It costs about the same as sposies, from what I hear, though. On the bright side, it's better for the environment, but you don't save any money.

  • Are there specific brands or types STMs recommend??
  • Are there specific brands or types STMs recommend??
It all depends on how they fit your baby. DS was big and had very chunky thighs, so I hated my Charlie Bananas and Grovia AIO. It felt way too trim/small on him. I liked a Nicki's and a Bottombumpers that I had, but it didn't fit him well when he got older.

I really liked my Kawaiis (bonus: they're super cheap), Blueberries and Rumparooz. Bumgenius were ok. I like the cute patterns, but I don't feel like the elastic held up as well as other brands.

For nights (once baby isn't pooping at night), you won't find anything better than a Sustainablebabyish Overnight Bamboo Fleece paired with a wool cover. That sucker is leak proof and amazing!
