Thoughts on home heart monitors?

I have a heart monitor at home. I used it with my first born son and loved it. But my mom was saying don't use it because it can make babies go deaf and possibly cause early birth. But my doctor a few days said it was fine to use it as i get further along. What are your thoughts on the heart dopplers?

Re: Thoughts on home heart monitors?

  • I would go with what the doctor says. :)

I know that some doctors and midwives discourage dopplar use because they can cause mamas a lot of stress (if you can't find the heartbeat, for example). It's also difficult to distinguish your normal internal sounds or even the placenta sound from the heartbeat, but with a little practice it gets easier.

I use mine maybe twice a week until I start feeling kicks. For me, it's peace of mind. Worth every penny.

  • There is another thread dedicated to it here. I don't have any experience with it yet but I am considering getting one!

  • Thanks ladies. I just had a miscarriage around 9 weeks and i am now 9 weeks with my rainbow baby. So i keep trying to make sure baby is still there lol. I found the heart beat this morning. Of course baby kept swimming away so i couldn't hear it for but a second. But it is just nice to have the reassurance. And Kosmo86 i think they are worth getting. It just puts you at peace.
  • whickeyloo- I actually just ordered one of amazon! My husband thinks its strange but I think it will be great in between appts.

  • My husband did some research on these and he found that they could possibly be dangerous? I have not sent this anywhere, if there are any can someone please tell me what they could be, I would love to have one, I have had a few minor scares and I'm 8 weeks so it would just be nice to have some peace of mind...thanks!
  • I have one but I only use it every few days or once a week. I have the Sonoline B and I too thought it wouldn't be very healthy to be putting all that pressure on my abdomen so much. It does help me by reassuring me that baby is still there when I hear the tiny heartbeat!

  • I've just ordered one of these to  :)
  • I have the sonoline B and the sound is as clear as day on those. I have found my babies heart beat twice with it. But i think I'm done using it for a while. I don't want to risk anything.
  • I rented one with my first 2 children and am debating if I should for this one too.  Maybe buying is cheaper now then renting?  I haven't looked into it.  I just found that after a long hard day, it helped me relax to lay down and listen to the baby's heartbeat.  I normally got one around 10wks and sent it back after I started to feel the baby move around 14-16wks.
