Introducing Rice/Oatmeal Cereal

How's it going for anyone who has started? We received the green light from our pedi to begin introducing cereals first and puréed fruits/veggies a couple weeks later. If you EBF, are you using breast milk to make it rather than water?

Re: Introducing Rice/Oatmeal Cereal

  • We introduced it last week, made it with prepared formula since I'm not BFing anymore. She wasn't that into it after we tried a few times, so we dropped it for now. We'll prob wait until 6 months to try more food. Good luck!

We've had a couple attempts but baby isn't quite ready yet. Although, last night my husband made it into a fun game and baby actually ate some cereal. He has a bit of reflux, so I wonder if it helped a bit bc he was super happy today.

Eta- we are going to try again tomorrow
  • On this note, does anyone know the benefits/differences between rice, oatmeal or barley? Is any one better than the other?
  • @VioletandRose, the only thing I know is that sometimes oatmeal cereal is recommended for breastfed babies because it has a natural laxative in it. Breastfed babies often have more trouble with digestion when introducing cereals, which leads to constipation, and the oatmeal helps with this more so than the rice. I haven't heard of barley cereal for babies. My pedi said only rice cereal or oatmeal cereal, so unfortunately I don't have any input there. Sorry!

Thanks, everyone, for the input! I'm not sure if our little man is ready for cereal just yet but I'm going to try a little with breastmilk to see how he likes it. :)
  • I was told not to do barley or rye cereals until after 9 months because of potential gluten problems.
  • @VioletandRose

Rice cereal has no nutritional value. It is merely a filler. I call it baby junk food.  If you do cereal, you want to start with a single grain.  Multigrains can be added later.

OP- initially I mix with BM. When baby is older, I mix with BM and fruit for added flavor.

Cleveland Clinic actually released this feeding solids before 6 months has been linked to allergies, eczema, and digestive problems.
I asked my doctor about all of this and she said that problems arise when you feed your baby solids before 6 months IN PLACE OF of breastmilk or formula. Feeding solids between 4 and 6 months is not for nutritional purposes, it's to teach your baby how to eat. Keep the same amount of breastmilk or formula. Just a taste of other foods is all they need.

Breastmilk or formula needs to be their main source of calories until 12 months. Solids are just for taste/texture learning until then.
  • To each their own! If someone wants to feed their baby before 6 months that's totally fine. Our pediatrician who just graduated with her medical license mentioned to us that 5 months is a good time to start based on the most current research- and that guidelines should be changing soon, so that's when we will be starting. If someone wants to start solids at 4 months and their baby is handling it well, and that's what works for their family- no judgement here

THIS. Everyone should be consulting with their pediatrician and introducing foods according to their recommendation and the baby's readiness. Most research and studies are generalizations and not necessarily right for every baby. For what its worth, we are starting with oatmeal mixed with breastmilk at 6months.
  • we started cereal almost 2 weeks ago and she is just getting the hang of it and not shoving so much out with her tongue.  We added 1 oz of fruit (gerber makes a cute trial pack with 8 1 oz fruits to try instead of wasting the 2.5 oz regular) after a few days.  LO was 4 months on the 2nd so I know it is a few weeks early for fruit but she loves it so we are keeping with it.  The first week we did just a evening (6-7pm) feeding and then a bottle before bed, the second week we added a breakfast feeding too.
