What bottle do you like?

i couldnt find this in the search but feel free to redirect me. My lo is 7 weeks & was taking a bottle just fine every few days up until about a week ago. Now she refuses the bottle & only wants the boob. I thought maybe she was protesting frozen milk but even if it's fresh she doesn't want it. DH has tried as well as my mom.
i have been using dr Brown bottles with either the premie nipple or the one it came with. Also tried the advent that came with my pump. I'm thinking I'll try a new brand.
what do you recommend?

Re: What bottle do you like?

  • We use tommy tippee. Used them for DD five years ago and now DS takes it just fine. He doesn't have a problem going from bottle to boob and back.
  • Loading the player...
  • We used Tommee Tippee with DS but they're too fast for DD so she takes Dr Brown's with a preemie nipple.

I'm really curious how the Bare Air Free bottle would do and plan to get one to try with DD. They have a nipple for breastfed babies that is supposed to be a little closer to how a breast works.
  • I also use the Dr. Browns with preemie nipple. I've been using the Options bottle but next feeding in going to attempt the Playtex drop in again and see how he does now that he's a little older. The thought of even less dishes when I get home from work/school is very appealing.
I will let you know how he does.

So, let little man eat from a Playtex drop in and he did surprisingly better. The flow of the nipple is only a little faster than the preemie nipple. The nipple is wider, soft and flexible.
I think I might have a winner for us both. Give them a shot. Also, they are the Babies R Us version of the original drop ins. I hate the new nurser bottles. I believe they were purchased on Amazon, they were a gift from my aunt.

ETA these bottles but with the Playtex nipple.  the nipple that comes with them is very stiff and my baby couldn't latch to it. Otherwise exactly like the original drop in bottles.
  • I love the munchkin latch bottles. LO has used them since the beginning because she has a problem latching
  • We've used the glass avent naturals since she was born
  • We did the Playtex Drop In bottles with my 2 year old and we decided to try them for our new baby. I love them...you can squish the liners to get out all of the air, which really helps keep down gassiness and studies have shown that they reduce colic.
  • We use Comotomo bottles for DD's nightly bottle with dad.  She took it right away and we've never had any issues going between bottle and breast.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • I just use the Madela bottles that came with my pump. I'm no longer pumping but we still use them. DD doesn't have any issues with them, but I might look into a different brand when we get bigger bottles
  • Tommee tippy. Work wonders to go back and forth between breast and bottle

I want to add DD was exclusively bottle fed for five weeks and now goes between bottle and breast no problem
  • Mam! The nipple is wide and flat. We were using dr brown and she would leak half the bottle out of the side of her mouth.
  • Como tomo! Especially if breast feeding it mimicks the breast
  • I just use the Madela bottles that came with my pump. I'm no longer pumping but we still use them. DD doesn't have any issues with them, but I might look into a different brand when we get bigger bottles
I believe the Medela nipple fits most standard bottles. If you wanted to keep her on the same nipple look into the cheapies like Gerber or Parents Choice. Those bottles fit the Medela pump so the threading should be the same
  • We use the avent naturals.  My 2 month old DS has been using the 1 nipples but he takes on 5-6 ounces very quickly.  I just ordered their "first flow" nipple off amazon which is their version of a preemie nipple.  Hoping it works since it's going to be hard to keep up with how much he wants to eat each time when I go back to work a few days a week in March.
  • I love mam. She also will take Medela and playtex ventair bottles but we like the Mam the most since it completely comes apart and she doesn't get hiccups as often with them.

We use Dr. Brown's bottles with a preemie nipple & a lot leaks out from the sides of her mouth. I figured that would happen with any bottle so I didn't worry too much about it. I'm going to try mam bottles now though!
  • Have you tried using the next size up in bottle nipples?  We switched from Avent natural to Born Free slow flow glass bottles and she likes these much better! They have an anti colic vent system which has helped her not get so many air bubbles while feeding.

  • @Mother0fDragons (btw love ur screen name)
i think maybe I should try a faster nipple bc my letdown & flow is fast. Maybe she's annoyed she has to work the bottle? Idk but it'd be so awesome to be able to leave for longer than an hour or 2!

Yes try them! DD1 never had that issue so that's why we went with Dr browns again. But dd2 just made a mess with those tiny narrow nipples. I just hated the wet burp rags and the wasted milk so I was on a mission to find something else. Thankfully I had friends that let me borrow a few diff kinds before I had to purchase.
  • There are the bottles we use in the order we like them (we got a lot of different ones at the shower and thought to try them all bc babies really pick):
    dr Browns size 1
    joovy boob size 1
    tommee tipee size 1
baby is more efficient with the doc Browns and joovy boobs. I think bc he's tongue tied, it's easier for him to drink the ones that he doesn't have to open his mouth super wide. He loses a lot of milk the wider the mouth. And gets frustrated.

We were using the premie nipples and he would yell at me while eating. If you guys are having trouble with feeding with premie nipples, they might be too slow?
  • @Mizuiro007 Don't waste your money on the Bare Air bottles. I thought the same thing and got one the other day thinking it was going to be totally amazing but it's not. It says the nipple only flows as fast as the babys suck (I was looking for a nipple that wasn't too fast for her) and it literally ended up all over her it was like a faucet. It says 0-24 months so there is no in between stages. Also, it's a pain in the ass to put together every time. You literally have to take it apart after each feeding, clean it, then reassemble exactly how the directions say. Definitely not a fast process.

I use Dr. Browns as well and started out with the preemie nipple. Now it's stage 0+m which is a 1 and slow flow. Works great and it has a vent system that prevents her from getting really gassy
  • We love the mam bottles. He has never had trouble going from breastfeeding to the bottle and I like the self sterilizing feature. He took a Tommie Tippi bottle once (he got hungry when I was sterilizing all the mam bottles) and took it well but seemed to get alot more air with it.
  • @beccabeeee Thank you. That's good to know. Yes, we got the 8 ounce Dr Brown's options bottles hoping they'd last and she's still on the preemie nipple at 11 weeks. Occasionally we try the size 1 and sometimes she does well but mostly she does better with preemie still.
  • Tommee tippee.  Switched to these after Playtex vent aires caused too much gas.  Love these bottles, and only has three parts.

Another vote for the Playtex Drop-Ins here! I love them! I have used them for all of my kids, and they worked really well for 3 out of the 4 (DD2 hated anything that wasn't me feeding her). I also really like their newest design which I got as a sample with DS2. It has a hinge on the side so you can prepare the bottle while it's straight, and then tilt it while feeding for a more upright position. Pretty cool feature! :)

FYI for anyone who wants to try either of the Playtex bottles, Playtex makes different styles of nipples with different features, and recently started selling one of each in a variety 4 pack. The 4 pack is supposed to work with both the Vent-Aire and the Drop-Ins bottles.

  • I have the Phillips AVENT natural. My son loves the nipple design. They are also easy to clean and hold.

Amen! I haven't tried any other we started w this around a week old and have stuck w it. She's been on the size 2 nipple since about 7 weeks old.
  • We use advent natural (glass) and he's had no confusion despite starting them at 3 days old.

@kksquared I ordered the preemie "0" nipple and it has doubled or tripled how long it takes DS to finish. I use the preemie nipple at night to slow down his bedtime bottle so he's not gulping and getting gassy before bed. I tried the Dr. Browns I'd bought as my number 2 choice for bedtime hoping it'd help with burping and gas but for DS I think the slower nipple works better than the venting in the browns for a slow soothing bottle.
  • Comotomo we love these! We didn't give her a bottle till 5 weeks old but she took to it just fine!
  • We've had so much drama with bottles with this LO. We started out with Medela, but she just screamed at us. Then we tried Dr. Browns with preemie nipple- same thing. Then dh went and bought 1 of every brand of bottle at BRU. LO will only take Avent natural. And even though she will take that bottle, she seems to strongly prefer breastfeeding over the bottle.

  • @TomekiaB I hope it slows him down we will try soon.  He is breastfed and only takes a bottle of pumped milk if I'm away from him.   I just hope he can slow down and take less with a bottle so he doesn't get over full.  Luckily I'm only going back 15 hrs a week split over 3 days so hopefully only a few bottles a week.
  • My LO loves his Avent natural bottles! With size 1 nipples. We also had some size 2 but I switched them out cuz it's too fast for him.
  • Thanks, everyone! We're going to do some shopping today I think. I'll let you know

Avent Naturals were the only ones that DD would take, also. Thank the heavens that DS is ok with using them since I've got 7 of the smaller size* and 4 of the larger ones. I'd hate to have to re-buy a bunch of different bottles.

*We had 6 of these and then got another one with this baby as a sample

  • Luckily my LO is not particular at all with his bottles as I have a mix of avent naturals, Tommie tippee, medela, and munchkin latch.
  • We use the avent bottles with size 1 nipples. If need be we will use the medela bottle and nipple that came with my pump but he pushes the nipple in and we constantly have to fix it. Also we got a free MAM bottle as a sample but I think the flow is too fast.

I could've written this exact thing, down to getting the MAM bottle as a sample. We were using that as a backup bottle, and didn't like it because of the extra parts to wash. It was also too fast until we put DS on Enfamil AR for his spitups.

@redfallon did you find a big difference with the formula. DS spits up a lot and we are using the Enfamil Gentlease for supplementing. He spits up breast milk too but I feel like he spits up way more when he gets a bottle of formula.
