My doctor says no hair dye :(

I know most people online say hair dye is probably ok, but just called my OB to see his thoughts, and he said no hair color close to the roots at all during pregnancy. I have very dark brown hair that sprouts gray all along my part. I usually color my roots every 3-4 weeks. I will take his advice because I am really trying to play it 100% safe, but this sucks! Just needed to vent.

If you want a more positive spin on this, I had a friend from russia several years ago and she told me that it's a tradition where she's from in russia to not change one's appearance during pregnancy, then after you deliver the women closest to you help you have a makeover before you begin receiving guests. So like no hair dye, no hair cut, no makeup for the duration of the pregnancy and then after you deliver your mom/sisters/closest friends help you bathe, and dress in nice clothes and dye/cut/style your hair and do your makeup, and then all your extended relatives are allowed in to visit. That tradition might not work in its entirety for you, but maybe you can steal the idea of a day of pampering post baby, and schedule a big spa day for after you deliver. Get your hair done and your nails painted, go for a massage-say yes to you, you deserve some pampering!

It's so cool that you brought that up, because I came here to say the same. It's a bit of an outdated tradition, but essentially true. Russian women these days wear make-up during pregnancy if they wore it before and such, but don't drastically change their looks. The hair thing is still big, and I am going by that tradition right now.

OP, just be careful if you are tempted to seek out a "natural" replacement like henna. A lot of the brands sold in North American stores contain metal salts that aren't the best. I don't know the impact on pregnancy (it is worth researching), but they can interact with chemically treated hair and leave you with this weird greenish mess that is impossible to get rid of or cover.

On the upside, pregnancy hair is supposed to be majestic, right? Tinges of grey won't take away from that.

I paid my hairdresser extra to come to my house and color my hair about a week post partum. It was perfect. Maybe that's an option.

Bummer. I had an ombre thing going with my natural color at the roots, and then in early January I decided to lighten it up again. Kind of regretting that now, but I think it was done in a way that it'll blend okay as it grows out. I don't think I want to take any chances with it either, I'm just thinking of how potent that bleach smells!

That's a bummer but it is good to respect your doc's wishes.Jjust to bring another side to this though, I am bottle blonde and dye my roots myself every 4-5 weeks and have done that in both of my pregnancies. Doctor was good with it, though. And actually, I wait until I'm out of the first trimester to start (don't know if that helps at all, but it gives me more peace of mind.) Anyways--it's interesting what different doctors think!

Love the Russian tradition. If only my roots were less of a contrast from my dyed hair color.

Light Mountain Henna is safe and natural. No weird salts or dyes or metal, just plain and natural henna. You can also use it over dye or use permanent dyes on your hair afterwards (I've done both), as long as you don't try to go light or drastically change your hair color. It coats the hair shaft, so it doesn't ever go away.

I'm just dying the hair away from my roots to match my roots so at least it won't look terrible when my roots grow out. Maybe that's an option?

Just want to throw this out there... I'm a cosmetologist and if you want to go back to regular dye post baby do not use henna. When henna is mixed with peroxide (it's in hair color developer) it causes the hair to break off. Literally a chemical haircut. It's not pretty. I won't color anyone's hair until all the henna has been cut off.

Actually, it's the metallic salts in fake henna that have this reaction. Though I've been told it's the ammonia, not the peroxide that causes it. If you use natural henna, it's seems perfectly safe. At least if my hair has anything to say about it.

Thanks for all the support and ideas! I think I am just going to make peace with this and take it one day at a time. I have some root spray stuff that I can use to cover it for now but the grey might get too pervasive later on. I will take the $100 or so a month that I spend on my roots and use it towards buying myself new clothes

Yep. Mine said no hair dye the first trimester. Just going to power through and pretend the new look is on purpose!
