Any other plus size ladies?

Do we have any other plus size mommies to be in this group? I am perfectly health but a size 26/28. I am so excited to be pregnant, but a little worried about the judgement that will come being plus size and pregnant.

  • Yep! It's easier said than done, but as long as your doctor has no concerns, everyone else can kick rocks.

  • I have been there my friend! I'm a 20/22 and about 290 lbs and 5'-11".  My last pregnancy ended poorly (that's putting it mildly) and I kinda felt like some people thought it was my 'fault' because of my size(totally untrue).  Just keep an eye on yourself, eat well, and if people give you nonsense about your size, I say point out something you might not like about them (perhaps how their giant nose is all up in your business!).  And do not buy their bs that being heavy means you're guaranteed a baby that has birth defects or that you'll have lots of miscarriages (both things people suggested to me...both of which are patently false) I know plenty of plus size women who give birth to beautiful healthy babies!  ❤️

  • I am about 20/22 and this is my first, I'm a little concerned with my weight and how it'll affect things, but I'm going to start walking when the weather gets a bit better. I hope that helps.
  • Me! :) already have one healthy kid. I have encountered some physicians that jump to conclusions and assume the worst. That's why I encourage people to interview their ob/cnm/etc. :)
  • The midwife I'm seeing is awesome. When I talked to her about becoming pregnant at my size she told me she doesn't care about size. That made me happy! My own mother said to me the other day "whenever you do get pregnant you will be considered high risk you know"...uhh excuse me bish, but you don't know what you're talking about

  • I'm a size 16/18. I'm in the middle of my other 2 pregnancy weights. Hopefully it will be fine. My first pregnancy was rough but I'm still 20 lbs less.

  • I am a size 18 and this is my second pregnancy. My first is now a three year old boy. Even though I was 25lbs lighter than then I am now I had a very wonderful and healthy pregnancy and never had any negative comments from my doctors. I talked to my GP prior to getting pregnant and she said as long as you eat healthy, stay active as you can, don't drink nor smoke and take your supplements I don't care what the number on the scale is and that is exactly what I did. I did the summer sander pregnancy workout dvd throughout my pregnancy and had a very smooth labor. I also avoided simple carbs and sugar as much as I could. I plan on doing the same this go around.

  • Hey all! I'm a 16/18. 1st baby but 4th pregnancy. So I'm very nervous about my weight because this is probably the heaviest I've been while pregnant. I lost about 80lbs before my 1st and have been slowly climbing back up ever since. Trying to get active without overdoing it but it's hard in winter.

@ktcakes87 Even after my losses, I found very little info that suggested being overweight actually makes you high risk, so yeah don't worry about what your mom said. But it can make pregnancy and labor a little more difficult. Or so I hear. Who knows? Every pregnancy is different anyway. Lol

  • Size 18 here. I've never had weight complications during my pregnancies. No GD or anything. My kids were all huge (9 lb 7 oz each with the boys and 10 lb 6 oz with my daughter), but my husband and I were both big babies as well. I don't think my babies' sizes are due to my weight.

  • @PerkyErkyI've been scouring the boards for something like this! I'm overweight and pregnant for the first time. I've always been slightly overweight, but after a difficult battle with anxiety last summer and fall I've ballooned up quickly.  Two funny things about that are that my anxiety is mostly tied to people seeing me poorly because of my weight, and I joined a sports club and I know this fat body can run and push for 80 minutes.  In addition I have exercise induced asthma, and with albuterol sulfate listed as a class C drug I've been trying to limit my workouts to activities that don't raise my heart-rate to the level where I'll need to medicate.  So, basically, I can walk, stretch, do my hand weights very slowly, and do some body weight strength stuff very slowly.  The two things that have me bummed about being overweight and pregnant are that I'm worried about being judged as a bad mother (especially by medical professionals), and I haven't wanted to take any pre-bump pictures whatsoever. One really great thing is I'll have a good scapegoat for these weight gain stretch marks!
  • Oh I should also add (size 18) that my drs actually recommend not exercising when I am pregnant because of my cervical issues. It's the only time in my life a doctor has told me to basically stay off my feet when I can and don't workout. I tried to eat healthy with an occasional splurge. Besides my cervix being a little biznatch, I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy with DS2 (I didn't birth DS1).

  • I'm a size 22/24.  My doctors have been pretty ok with my weight, as my blood sugar, cholesterol, etc are within normal limits.  If I was uncomfortable and thought that my doctor was judging me based on only my weight, I would probably find another doctor.

  • Size 16/18 here. @PerkyErky my doctor said the same to me during my last pregnancy! I felt like a bump on a log. I read that thread about fitness goals during pregnancy and I would love to be able to partake in that, but I'm going to wait and see what she says at my first appt.

This is the biggest I've ever been. We had a loss in November and not only did I not lose the baby weight from that, but also the emotional eating and the holidays didn't help. On top of not being able to be active for that pregnancy. I used to play roller derby and be pretty fit, so I'm to get back to that post baby.

  • Me! Although my pant size isn't huge, because I'm terribly disproportionate. I'm very concerned this pregnancy that I am going to have a harder pregnancy because of my weight. My last pregnant I swelled terribly and I am worried about complications this time. Partially because I'm trying for a vbac!! I started losing weight before I got pregnant, but nowhere near what I wanted.

  • I'm another larger lady (5'10" and around 230 lbs.) My doctor never said anything to me about my weight when I mentioned trying to get pregnant. I need to start mild exercise again, but I know from experience that it won't change my actual weight noticeably. Considering the proportion of Americans who are technically "overweight" or higher, I'm not surprised to see so many on here.

  • Me! Starting my pregnancy at 212lbs, only 5w2d and already feeling soo bloated which I know is normal but I'm just still so scared that I'm going to get huge and unhealthy for my height etc!
I had a loss last year though which broke my heart so I've just got to think any growing I do is worth it for a healthy 9mths and baby :) xx
  • I'm a size 16 and I was concerned. When I had by initial appointment to discuss ttc my 2nd I brought my weight up to my ob. She said it was great to try to loose weight and be healthier but that it was not a concern as far as being pregnant was concerned. I think as long as you're eating healthy at least 90% of the time and exercising, if allowed, you're totally fine.
  • @Julia70286 I used to play roller derby too! Who did you skate for?
  • Joining in here, I fluctuate between 14/16/18 and honestly with all this bloating right now can't wear any of my (3 pairs) of jeans. Leggings it is, hah.
I had a loss in early December where I felt like none of my clothes fit right and then I feel like I gained a bit after that. Then when I found out I was pregnant again earlier this month!
I am really trying to focus on not gaining too much but also just trying to focus on making it 9 months with this one.

I went through fresh meat with the Angel City Derby Girls, but then they moved their warehouse and it was way too far for me. So I switched to San Fernando Valley Roller Derby, but the group got really cliquey so I took a break and unfortunately didn't go back. I wish I was closer to Angel City, I'd go back to them in a heartbeat.

Edit - I stopped playing a few years ago when SFV was just starting so I think they were just going through growing pains... I don't want to sound like I'm badmouthing, I'm still cool with so many of their gals!

I HATE buying pants too! I'm a size 16/18 and I found the perfect pair of maternity jeans that I lived in until they got holes in them, from destination maternity, they were by Jessica Simpson.

  • Yep. I am a size 16/18. Wanted to be a little trimmer before I got pregnant but I've lost 40 lbs in the last 2 years so I am much healthier and still excited and in shock about this pregnancy. I was diagnosed with PCOS a little over 10 years ago, had a cycle maybe once or twice a year unless I was on drugs. Once I changed my diet and lifestyle for good a few years ago, started taking vitamins and apple cider vinegar my cycles started to come on pretty regularly like every 28 days. Finally got pregnant after 2 years of trying, happened naturally too which is why I was so shocked because we were preparing to start fertility treatments.

Anywho, even though I've been overweight most of my life I have always always always been active... danced since the age of 3 through college, played volleyball, softball and basketball until high-school as well. It's too bad they didn't figure out my hormonal problems until college, I could have dropped weight a lot sooner had we known.

But anyway, my point is even though I was and still am overweight I am still really healthy... no bloodpressure, bloodsugar etc problems. I've been nutritiously conscious of my diet the last couple years which helped me drop the weight and even more so now I'm preggers. My doctors say as long as I'm making the right choices everything should be just fine.

I'm still not all that confident about how I look, and a little worried how plump and blobular I will look later on, rather than looking cute and pregnant but I have to remind myself that as long as baby and me are healthy that's what matters. My husband on the other hand said he can't wait to see me turbo waddle later on ;)

And I am stocking up on lots and lots of cute leggings! I find them at Ross for less than $10!

  • @SteffanieM85 Hahaha, I totally don't plan on wearing anything but leggings and dresses this whole pregnancy.

@AshleyGemini24 I also carry my weight in my midsection and I'm worried I won't look pregnant. As long and the baby and I are healthy, that's all that matters!

I'm 5'3" and a size 22... My RE said I needed to loose 40lbs before getting pregnant and switched my meds the first appointment I met him. We were told it wouldn't happen without assistance but wo weeks later on the new meds and a BFP! I'm nervous because of my weight because he wants me to see a high risk but I am healthy otherwise with all my level, although I have a kidney disease but it's been pretty good for years.. It was disappointing and everytime his nurse called, she said, "And don't forget we need to loose weight!" It's so sad that even doctors and nurses have a stigma but I'm praying all stays well! With my kidney disease and PCOS, it's been hard to loose weight and I was doing well before we found out so I'm just trying to keep healthy!

  • That must be a little disheartening when they constantly mention your weight. I know most people mean well, they want you to be healthy and safe, but just because someone is overweight doesn't mean they can't have a normal pregnancy.

Several of my "thin" friends have had major complications with their pregnancies the last couple years so just because someone is within a normal BMI doesn't mean they are healthier than me or that their pregnancies are guaranteed to be problem free. It can happen to anyone.

The stigma that overweight ladies can't do anything as well or aren't as healthy is hooie. People are so judgy, even medical professionals! I mean sheesh.

My OBGYN mentioned to me some risks that can come with a higher BMI, such as how the extra weight can push down on the pelvis and make it harder for some larger ladies to deliver vaginally but it's still possible, and happens every day, it just depends on your body. And he never mentioned anything about my weight other than just some typical risks so I was informed but I didn't feel shamed or embarassed.

Motherhood Plus has a great selection. Also, good will is nice because you can find some already worn/stretched items that fit nicely. I'll update if I find another brand too.

  • My biggest thing is "looking" pregnant! My cousin is heavier than me and looked pregnant at about 6 months and she was like don't worry! You can tell! I got annoyed because a few years back a girl I knew got pregnant and told me I was too fat to ever look pregnant! What a b*tch! I put her in her place! LOL

  • I agree that I worry about ever really *looking* pregnant - but on the plus side, at least we can hide it longer? Like I assume even if I let my bloat hang out, my colleagues will probably just think I put on a few more pounds and not "she must be pregnant," right?

You will look pregnant just fine. Being thin is not a requirement for a cute bump.
