Acne help

I am breaking out pretty bad around my chin.  Little red bumps that start out as white heads.  Anyone have good pregnancy safe products they are using that seem to calm the redness and acne?

Re: Acne help

  • I've been using this all natural, vegan charcoal soap I got on etsy and it has helped tremendously. I had acne before getting pregnant, but it got even worse. I use it with my clarisonic brush on my face and all over my body. I have sensitive skin, so it's a little drying. I am using it just every other day now and that helps.

  • I have cystic acne after ovulation, but this is totally different.  I will look into the soap.
  • I'm looking for something too! I have terrible acne like cysts from rosacea that flare when I'm preggo. When I was having DS my doc Ok'd Clinique 3 step and that helped a little. I'm thinking of trying the rodan and fields acne system- I don't know much about it but I've heard it works wonders (once I figure out if the ingredients are ok).

@blond1230 Try it. It has worked so well for me in keeping my acne at bay this pregnancy. I had horrible acne that left terrible marks with DD and this time I think I've only had 3 small breakouts. Full disclosure, I'm a consultant, but this is really my unbiased opinion. And my doctor ok'd all of the steps in the regimen. Everyone reacts differently, but I'd give it a try and just send it back if it doesn't work for you.

ETA: Get the clarifying toner instead of spot fading. That is the one that is ok for pregnancy/nursing.

  • I've been using Cetaphil followed by CeraVe to moisturizer. I do it morning and night and while it has helped tremendously, it's definitely not a miracle worker.
  • I started using a charcoal bar soap about 6 months ago and I absolutely love it. Lush makes one that's amazing. I'm using one by Biore now and it's just as good. Neither ever dried out my skin. I use it on both my face and body in the shower with a loofa and it's been a godsend.

  • I use coconut oil and a drop or two of tea tree oil. Once in a while I add a small amount of banking soda for more of a scrub. Works great and everything is natural so nothing to worry about. I'm horribly acne prone and have been since 8 yrs old. This works great for me. It moisturizes your skin at the same time.
  • Is sulfur ok?  Has anyone asked their doctor?  I read it's one of the more natural options.
  • @lalalorelai I haven't tried Lush, but we have one close by. Have you tried their hair dye ever? I've been considering it, but don't know anyone that has ever tried it before.
  • @DDRRT1982 my doctor approved my sulphur wash.

  • I just did a bunch of reading and feel good it's ok.
  • I bought the charcoal bar, a moisturizer with charcoal and green tea in it, and a sulfur mask.  I have tea tree oil toner too.  Let's see if any of this helps.
  • @DDRRT1982 Where did you get a sulfur mask from? I'd be interested in trying it too. I had gotten a mask from glam glow right before I found out I was pregnant, and now can't use it.
  • While this prob isn't for chronic acne, but I developed a nasty pimple that is very white and painful.  The makeup artist we work with (she works w celebs) told me to put a dab of Matuska Honey on my breakout and it will take down swelling and redness.  Then in the am it should be okay to pop it.
  • I got it from Ulta.  it's called Acne Free Therapeutic Sulfur mask.  The back didn't show any ingredients that I had read are huge no-nos.  It was so hard looking for things when there is so much to avoid.  This could be luck or the products, but this morning my acne seemed to calm down and there are not any new breakouts.

I checked the march of dimes website and over the counter products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycol acid and azelic acid are generally safe. I really like the murad and juice beauty products from ulta. I have had bad acne since a teenager, cystic acne and was on accutane twice when younger. These products have really helped keep my skin clear.

Edited because it wouldnt let me keep typing.

  • Did any of you ladies find anything that worked? This acne is getting annoying!
  • I'm still using my coconut oil with tea tree oil and my skin has never looked better. It's possibly the least amount of acne I have had in 20 years. Plus it's a great moisturizer for this time of year.
  • @michelle_shelle do you use it once or twice a day? I have both of those items!
  • I use desert essence tea tree blemish stick and feel it does a great job.

  • Anything with sulfur in it usually works well for spot treatment and is safe for pregnancy. You just have to make sure the product isn't sulfur AND salicylic acid. I thought Dr. Murad had one with just sulfur in it, but it looks like it now has salicylic acid in it as well.
  • I use Finacea gel everyday, it's safe for pregnancy.  It's Rx, though, so you'd have to get it through your dermatologist.  I started breaking out on my chest and back and so I started putting it there, as well, and it works really well.  Also, if I have a really awful flare up, I have samples of Differin gel.  I know Differin isn't safe for pregnancy, but it's literally a dot for one day in one tiny spot on my skin, I don't rub it all over.  I did it with DD, too, as spot treatment, and she's just fine :-)

  • I ordered a sulfur bar off of amazon and that had helped.
  • I am also using the charcoal moisturizer
  • @squishy0511 I only use it right after the shower. I put a dab in my palm, about a dime or nickle, add one to 3 drops of tea tree oil depending on breakouts. Rub it in, let sit for 15-30 seconds. Get a face cloth very warm and then wring it out. Put on my face for another 30 sec or so and then gently wipe some off. You don't want it all off just the excess that can make your face shiny.
