alohasoprano thanks for the heads up! I actually wasn't aware of that outbreak until the last few days when I was googling everything Zika related. I need to find cute, lightweight, cotton clothes to wear in Hawaii! I planned on wearing short and thin straps all week.
@MynaBird what are you packing besides insect repellent?
We tend to be much more nervous during pregnancy to begin with. This just adds to the puzzle. I live in Miami and my SIL is a mother/baby nurse at one of the top maternity wards here and what they've been advised to tell patients is to avoid traveling (obviously) to warmer locations and to just incorporate bug spray into your daily routine. But remember, I'm in SoFla so I get mosquitoes even when it's cold. I've just been using ecosmart bug spray and I carry with me so it doesn't fade by the afternoon...and even I think this may be even too extreme. The chances of them issuing a pregnancy warning here in the states is slim, we just have to be extra cautious that's all.
I texted my OB "Should I be worried about this mosquito virus??" and these are her exact words, "Not yet. It's not in the US, right now no reported cases except in people who have traveled to high risk areas". I was hoping for more in depth info. I will def be wearing bus spray anytime it's even remotely warm here.
@NicknShan Honestly? I'm still not sure. I have maternity shorts and tank tops and a couple of sundresses, but not really anything heat-friendly and belly-friendly that keeps me covered. I guess I'll throw in a couple of lightweight pashminas? We're renting a house, so I'm leaning mostly toward liberal applications of DEET and a large number of citronella candles. The house has a pool, so Plan A is just to keep me and the toddler up to our necks in water as much as possible. Mosquitoes can't swim, right?
Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe a swing by Cabela's is in order to see what the latest and greatest in insect repellent tech has to offer...
Wonderful! I live in South Florida. Sure our weather is great but that also means we are full of mosquitoes anytime of the year. Combine that with the fact that our cultural diversity means lots of travelers flying in and out of the Caribbean, Central and South America all year round. Does anyone know where I can rent a bubble for the next 4 1/2 months??
I totally feel you! I'm a Miami native & slightly flipping out about the weather these next few months.
I have a spare room here in MN we have lots of mosquitos here, but the type that carries Zika doesn't live here. There have been "sightings" of them in Minnesota, but it isn't home here.
My impression after reading some of the articles was that the doctors think the virus has a negative effect (microcephaly) on the developing fetus in early pregnancy, which I take to be during the first trimester. Not a medical professional over here or anything, but I hope this means that all of us are now long past the point in our pregnancies where exposure to the virus would be a huge issue!
I've been reading up too and so far it's South America and Central America where the most concern is. (Correct me if I'm wrong). We are still going on our Bahamas trip in a few weeks. I'm really not worried. We actually are staying on a boat not on the island. We will have excursions of course to the island but staying on a boat. I'm definitely going to do my due diligence and use repellent.
@NicknShan not sure what island you're headed to, but right now big island has dengue fever. It doesn't have the same reputation as Zika but it still can be rough for pregnant women. Just a heads up. It isn't terrible, just plan on bug spray if you're headed to Hawaii island. I believe we're the only island with an outbreak right now. Enjoy your trip. Aloha!
O.O we're going to the Big Island in February. ;.; I asked my doctor last month and she said go and have fun. Should we rethink?

I would just follow the news and listen to the CDC. If there are no travel restrictions, I would go. Just do your best to avoid mosquitos bites! Insect repellent. AC if available. Longer sleeves (lightweight) clothing. Etc...
Grr. I don't have enough swear words for this. My baby moon to Costa Rica is the first week in March. So far I was thinking it might work. Now I have to track down whether this was contracted locally or through travel. Just, so many cuss words.
@AshleyBKeen I live in the middle of it and I'm pregnant and my doctor hasn't said a word. Dengue isn't linked to any prenatal issues. It can just be unpleasant. Wear repellent, be vigilant. Don't go anywhere where there have been a lot of cases (google it, there are lots of maps). I know they've closed Waipio Valley. I'm just being extra aware and doing my best to keep away from mosquitos. Enjoy your vacation! Aloha!
I'm obsessing over this crap. It was almost hot here today (80 degrees) and put bug spray on to play outside with DS at 5:30. The mosquitos were everywhere. Now, our clothes washer crapped out on us tonight and FIL is over here helping DH try to fix it and they keep leaving the back door wide open. Me and baby girl don't stand a chance! I know that's kind of irrational, but really it's not.
I live close to Dallas, little scary. It's also scary that if mosquitos start carrying it here at some point it's not enough for me to just worry about not getting bit since DH could get bit and give it to me. We will definitely be having our yard treated for mosquitos this year because DS wants to basically live outside when it's warmer, ugh.
And I'm out. A US traveler came back from CR with Zika. Told our folks (it was a family trip) and they are going to cancel too. I said I was so excited to rock my bump in a bikini and my mom said there are no safe bikini bump rocking places left. Sigh.
Thanks @msbeachnj ! I feel better having a decision. I was just really excited about the beach and soft sand and my belly in a bikini. I'll take the safe healthy baby instead happily(minus a few grumbles).
Met with my doctor today and asked about the PR trip I had been planning to visit my sister. When I brought it up to the nurse two weeks ago, she said not to worry about it and just to wear bug spray. She also said she was sick of hearing about Zika...today was a different story. My doctor said he can't force me to cancel my trip but he absolutely recommends it. He said because the countries it is hitting primarily are developing that we don't know enough about what it can do in the other stages of pregnancy and it is not worth the risk. Of course now we have seven cases here in Houston so unfortunately we may have more of an opportunity to do our own research I had already decided in my head that I didn't want to risk it but wanted to pass his advice along to everyone else.
Thanks for sharing @MeganF08 ! I'm going to my doctor on Friday & plan to ask her opinion as well but my mind is pretty made up against going to the Caribbean.
No problem @MsBeachNJ! My doctor had a sign out at the check-in station that said to notify him immediately if you have plans to travel to South America or the Carribean. I couldn't believe how much the opinion on it has changed in just two weeks. When I had my anatomy scan two weeks ago the doctor who reviewed it told me not to worry about it and just go.
@MeganF08 I'm in the Houston area as well. It's literally terrifying me, which is probably excessive, but I don't care what anyone thinks at this point. You can go on the website for whatever county you live in and make a request for Mosquito Control to come spray. I did one this morning and I'm going to continue doing them daily until they are sick of me.
I'm in Orlando but my DH just went and purchased some mosquito spray for the lawn. wondering if health department will come spray for us.. Going to call tomorrow!
We're supposed to go to St.Petes next week, now I'm scared.
I live in St.Pete and I can tell you that I am not scared. The cases close by have all come from people who traveled to Central America/Caribbean. Plus, I live on a lake and usually have a ton of mosquitos in my yard and they aren't around right now. I haven't seen a mosquito in months. Try to relax, it's not an area with an uncontrolled outbreak.
I live in tampa. I wear sunscreen with deet and hang out in my screened porch

Now they are saying pregnant women shouldn't have sex with any one who might have been exposed without using condoms. They included oral, anal, and vaginal sex. Supposedly now they have found that the virus has been sexually transmitted.

That's correct. There was a sexually transmitted case confirmed in Dallas, TX.
Just want to say that I came back from my babymoon yesterday and while we didn't get to lay on a beach or go anywhere remotely warm, I don't regret changing our original plan of going to the Carribean for a second. I was just thinking about how in just three weeks more countries have been added to the CDC list and now we know it's sexually transmitted and also could be transmitted by blood transfusion. I definitely have piece of mind knowing I wasn't exposed at all.
I saw my kids pediatrician and she didn't have much information on it honestly. I guess that makes sense since she isn't trained for pregnancy or babies until they are born. She did caution against going to known infected countries/counties come summer. Her advice was more for my kids than me as a pregnant person. Since you shouldn't put bug spray with high levels of Deet on kids, to keep them covered with loose clothes and kid friendly spray. So the information wasn't too helpful.

So I just read an article that confirms:
Canada and Chile are the only Western hemisphere countries considered entirely free of the Zika-carrying mosquito.
Crazy!
