WTF Wednesday anyone?

It's early for WTF already, but here I go.

My assistant principal came to me and said "someone" complained they saw me leaving the building before 2:30.  By "before" he means, like, 2:28.  He said it's someone who admin has had trouble with and who watches everyone else like a hawk, apparently.  He didn't/wouldn't tell me who.  I am so f-ing sick of people who don't like their jobs, don't do their jobs, have been working in education for umpteen million years and are jaded and mean, taking it out on those of us who still love our jobs, love our kids, and don't mind taking work home so that we can be out of the building at a decent hour.   Is your classroom so wonderful and perfect that all you have time to do is watch other people and make assumptions about what I am or am not doing?

So effing sick of these "I'm going to take it to the union" teachers who give all the rest of us a bad name.

Re: WTF Wednesday anyone?

  • So speaking of people leaving early....

We are ALL pissed on my team.
One of the other managers comes in after 9:30 daily (start time is 9:00), leaves at 5:00 (technical done time is 5:30 although in this business, it is easy to stay to 7:00 or later). So there is an hour there a day she is not working. The rest of the day she is pumping (3x a day for atleast 40 minutes a time- is that normal??)
An assistant on her team told me that this manager will send her emails at 5:00 to follow up (that the manager was supposed to be working on that day), and then just leave, without telling anyone she is leaving.
It is infuriating that she is getting away with this!!!

She just got back from maternity leave in December. I understand she has a kid, but will this be the same expectation for me when Harper is born? I am betting not.... I want to say something to the VP we both report into, but dont want to come off as a tattle tale. Not only is it not fair that we all are expected to be here on time, but I know that the moral on her immediate team is dropping because of it.

  • @yogahh It's definitely not fair that she's coming late and leaving early-- I pumped 3-4 times, but got to work early, stayed late, and did the other one at lunch. I pumped during part of my prep when I could (and was super uncomfortable when I couldn't!) I always did work while pumping too so that I didn't have to take work home, or could at least take less work home. 40min is possible for some women. She may be pumping for 3-5 letdowns, power-pumping, or struggling with it. The situation sounds like a rough double-edged sword. It is really hard to return to work...but she also needs to be productive at work and it sounds like she's not.

My wtf is just lack of sleep and an unannounced observation. It was fine, but I feel like a zombie today.
  • @yogahh I had the same problem at my last job! My manager came back from maternity leave and consistently came in late, left early, and pumped three or four times a day for a RIDICULOUS amount of time. I tried to give her the benefit of of the doubt, but it became obvious that she was doing it because she knew she could get away with it. So frustrating!
  • WTF to this three hour glucose test. I'm flipping starving, the baby is slamming on my bladder, and I'm still bruised from the one hour last Friday. Luckily the techs are being gentle, but I just wish I could skip the test and take the GD diagnosis. Alas, here I sit. Two blood draws down, two to go.

  • @LondonToSavannah Yikes! I hope you make it through the cuts. Pittsburgh did a large layoff a few years ago and they were at least kind enough to send out each teacher's seniority ranking to them so that we had at least an idea of whether or not we'd be safe.

I see a lot of complaints about the 3 hour test. Why is it so difficult? Is it because you have to sit there for 3 hours? Which I know is bad and annoying...or is it worse? Like is the drink worse at the 3-hour test?

  • My WTF is to my co-worker who makes mistakes but NO ONE else can make them, and he likes to correct people not in his department which is a HUGE no-no at my job. He's the one in charge of setting up meeting rooms, and I get that it's time consuming, but he yells at the 2nd floor staff to the point that when I realized this morning that I make a mistake and forgot to release a room we didn't need anymore I didn't bother to tell him otherwise because he had already yelled at me once today for "answering the phone in an unprofessional manner" ( I said hello without my name because I would see it was an in building call and my co-worker has a tendency of calling from that room- and our branch manager has no problem with that) and I just don't feel like getting yelled at again by someone who isn't my boss. Also he tells other staff in the building that the 2nd floor staff is incompetent. I'm sorry, we do 3x the number of programs as any other department in this building, we have less staff, have a longer to do list, and we are only human. Also we have a manager who can't communicate worth crap, a full time person who is never on time, a full time person who is pregnant (me), and a number of part time staff who are only here some of the time.  I'm feeling like if I even see him I might yell at him or burst into tears.

I've had a return to nausea too! Luckily I never threw up in my first trimester, but the nausea has returned and its exhausting. Must be awful to be actually puking again :(

My WTF today is also my coworkers. I can't even get into it, I'm so frustrated. Basically it comes down to the fact that I'm 40-50 years younger than most of them and that leads to some condescending attitudes. The funny part is that most of these people are COMPLETE MORONS. Im not being bitter, I honestly don't know how they've made it this far in life. And I can say that, because most of them are also related to me.
  • I don't have a personal wtf, but my wtf has to do with something I saw on a tv show.  I was watching Rattled last night.  I was a little disappointed with the first episode, but I suppose they need to get all the introductions of the families out of the way before the good stuff comes.   So anyway I can't remember the name of the couple that did this, but one of the couples on there had made a Google docs color coded spreadsheet type schedule of the times they were going to feed their baby, change it, put it down to sleep etc, so that they could train it to get it on a schedule to sleep through the night.   Now I know that it is possible to do that, but I also know that it occurs later on down the line like three or more months in.  These people talked and acted like they were going to implement this soon as the baby came home.  I'm sitting there like, you guys are going to be in for a really rude awakening.  I mean they had tablets and stuff synced to the schedule set up around the house in order to alert them on the times and stuff lol.  I hope they show and episode of this failing big time.

  • @LondonToSavannah I understand. Our contract expired last June, so we've been working without one too. Thankfully, it seems like the union and board are playing nicely this month, so there might actually be some progress.Teaching gets wrapped up in so much politics!

I saw this too and I have a daughter that is a year and a half and I laughed out loud at that Google doc.  I also could not believe the first couple.  The man with three kids seriously acted like a teenager!! If I were his wife I would have said there was no way I was leaving my baby.  I would have stayed at the hospital.
  • My WTF is to my MIL right now. She had committed to watching LO on Tues and Fri when I return to work. Those are MIL's days off. We found a day care for M,W,Th. This weekend my MIL told my mom (not even DH or I) that she's looking for a new job and has an interview. Naturally, my concern is her days off changing. (But I shouldn't be surprised as she seems to change jobs every 6-8 months or gets laid off). So I asked her about it. She told me she'd no more after her interview on Tuesday. She called me last night and left a message saying "Interview went great. I'll probably start work there in a month or so. Go ahead and tell your day care you can switch days!" WTF! It doesn't work like that. I told her my day care was going to get someone in there on the off days so if I need to switch days there won't be a spot open. I put a call in to the day care lady to discuss with her. But I'm leaning towards putting the baby in day care 5 days. So now I have to tell my MIL her job history makes me nervous and I don't/ can't rely on her.
  • I was so emotional I wanted to cry last night for no reason, wtf? I never experienced that in the first trimester, and I thought that was supposed to go away in the second trimester???
  • I just need to add on to my vent...

So said manager called off at 9:40 today.
She was in charge of setting up a vendor meeting. Didnt tell me where it was. Didnt tell anyone on her team it was even happening.

What makes me mad is I KNOW she is making atleast 20k more than me. And doing nothing.

I wish we worked in an open salary environment. I would love to know how much everyone else is making, and compare work loads. GRRRRR

That's terribly unprofessional of her and seems like it should be a reportable offense of some kind.

Open salary isn't necessarily all it's cracked up to be-- though it may be different in business. In teaching, it's frustrating because most of salary is tied to simple seniority so there are people who have taught for 10yrs longer than me who are making literally 2X my salary. We're all doing the same work. I have higher degrees than some of them. I do understand rewarding longevity/experience, but the amount of disparity is pretty severe. It was made worse by the contract that passed just before I was hired full time 5.5 yrs ago because the way it's written, I could reach my cap salary in the next 5 years and it'll only be 10k more than I'm making now. It does lessen the degree of disparity between senior/mid/and novice teachers, but it makes the common salary range very narrow. :/
  • Wtf Buy Buy Baby employees. Thanks for incorrectly telling me that my less than two-year-old car seat was no longer compatible with the new version of my stroller and insisting my only option is to buy the new version of the car seat or another brand in order to use it with the stroller. I'm glad I called Uppababy customer service instead since that didn't sound right, but still irritated that they're spreading misinformation.
  • My WTF is piggy backing on PP's work issues - I am stuck with two shitty co workers who waste so much time and then are always whining about behind in their work. Then they are not managed because our director can never get her ass to work, she calls in sick 1-3 per week, so naturally she cannot keep up with anything herself. WTF Wednesday should be "WTF Work related thread"
  • @vinerie  It's worse for several reasons. First, it's double the sugar in the same size bottle on an empty stomach. Also, there are four blood draws. The first is the fasting draw, then every hour after you finish the drink for three hours. During that time you cannot eat or drink anything (even water) on top of having fasted since the night before. Many women become faint, dizzy and very nauseous, and the repeated blood draws don't help. The actual wait isn't thrilling, though sitting in a waiting room for nearly four hours isn't all that great (you cannot leave as they need to make sure you aren't chugging water/passing out somewhere), but you can bring a book to read (provided you aren't too dizzy to focus). So, overall not the most enjoyable way to spend half a day.

  • WTF to my coworker who was supposed to get back from Maternity Leave beginning of December. She didn't start coming into the office until Jan (she was technically working from home, but didn't even have her computer on), and is 'working from home' for 5 of the past 7 days since her child is sick. Ummm - to work, you have to have turned your computer on in the last 24 hours (its probably been longer, but it only shows it in days). I have a flexible work schedule in to my boss, and if she screws this up for me, I am going to flip out.

It is the beginning of the year. She has PTO. Take it, and if something comes up at end of year, talk about it then. But this is BS.

  • My WTF stems off my TWT post - the ELECTRICAL unit that we had overnighted and was supposed to be delivered by FedEx yesterday arrived today.  IN OUR SNOWBANK.  DH was home, and called FedEx, who told him that the driver left it in our mailbox.  The box is 12"x8", so that's not physically possible.  Oh, and that electrical unit does not work.  We've been down 1/3 of our business for a week now.  I'm ready to cry!

This sounds like a fellow manager of DH's.  She called in 3x in one week in December for 'car trouble' and then took the first 4 days off of January for an unexplained illness.  And the main boss lets her get away with it because he is retiring this year and she would pull the whole "im a woman and this is discrimination" act if she were fired.
