Would you go to Disney World now?

We have plans to go in 2 weeks. My parents, DH & I are of course worried about the whole Zika virus (already cancelled our March trip to Mexico). Worried about crowds of people from around the world, being in FL with warm weather & potential bugs, etc. What would you do?

Re: Would you go to Disney World now?

  • I'm actually leaving for Disney World in the morning. We go at least once a year and I have to say that Disney does a great job with pest control. However I plan on wearing a bug repellent bracelet during the day and long sleeves at night. I live in Atlanta, Ga and I feel my risk is no higher there then here at home. Just take precautions and use the repellents. I use an all natural one because I'm allergic to deet.

  • We are going to Orlando in March. We have not cancelled (though I am watching the news and if there's a big outbreak we will). As of right now I would go, but would take precautions just in case.
  • Take some bug spray but go. No cases here yet. I mean I live in FL so it's not like I can move.

  • My parents are insisting I wear long pants, closed shoes & long sleeve (no problem, it looks like it will on the cooler side). But also gloves and a netted bug hat! Just going for 3 nights... was signed up to run the Princess race but thinking of skipping that.

  • I was there 3 weeks ago, and we live an hour away from Disney. I really would not stress about cancelling until they declare Florida an affected state. At that point I don't know what all of us Florida pregnant ladies would do!
  • Mosquitoes that carry Zika are not in Fl. People who were diagnosed with Zika got it from traveling to infected areas. You will be fine. Take precautions and wear bug spray.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. There's no Zika in FL and so far the only way it has been passed person to person is sexually, so don't have sex with strangers and you don't have to worry.

No. Save your vacation days for maternity leave. Save your money for your child's first trip to Disney when they turn 3, and save yourself a lot of headache of worrying about the what ifs. You and hubby take a nice long weekend baby moon in April or May to a relaxing spa or retreat.

My my mom found an amazing deal to Orlando (flights were $69 round trip), a suite would be been under $150 a night and we had old tickets Disney confirmed they would still honor. Great deal, right? But we had to go Jan 19-26 ad I would have been 6-7 weeks. We gladly declined.  Just last year they had the measles scare. Zika aside (because you can wear deet repellant so it's not really much of a risk) you never know what may be the next epidemic when millions of people are in the same place from around the world with different levels of vaccinations and hygiene practices.

  • I wouldn't cancel your trip. Orlando is much further north than South Florida, so the chances that at this moment the mosquitoes carrying the virus have already made their way up there is slim. I live in South Florida, very close to the Everglades, and even with all the rain we've been having the mosquitoes have not been that bad. Remember in the states, we have much better mosquito control and prevention measures. Just wear bug spray and cover up wear you can (because it's freakin' hot and I don't expect you to cover up head to toe). This summer I plan on trying to stay inside in the A/C as much as I can and wear bug spray whenever I go out.

  • Zika and the carrying mosquitoes are not in Florida or in the United States. Yes, I would go.

I canceled my March babymoon to the BVI but I'm happily going to Florida next week.

I live in Orlando. Disney does an amazing job of spraying and the mosquitos are not back yet.

put bug spray on if you are worried but I'm not yet...

I was in Disney World last month (but it was not exactly mosquito season yet).  FWIW, I would not cancel the trip.  I agree with previous posters who noted that Zika-carrying mosquitos have not appeared in the US yet.  I would use extra precautions, but wouldn't cancel the trip.

  • I would definitely still go since there have not been any mosquito transmitted cases in the US.  I'm sure Disney sprays regularly and you can always use deet, other bug sprays, or even look into bugsaway clothing.  Although they are daytime biting mosquitos, they are most active two hours after sunrise and a few hours before sunset.   If you're really worried you can cover up or go inside during those times.
  • We are going this month. My OB and I talked yesterday. She said Disney should be fine but to avoid swampy areas. She said I could use off if I did and if I wanted the extra protection in Disney. Spring/summer will be much worse.

First, these counties still aren't where WDW is located.

Secondly, declaring a state of emergency is a great preventative measure which gives these communities more flexibility to use resources for prevention and preparedness.

  • We where supposed to go in May and we canceled it - not worth risking it in our opinion.
  • We decided to cancel our Disney trip. Yes, there aren't any cases there right now. But, every day tons of people from all over the world visit there so you never know when something will pop up. I just don't want to hear about cases coming forward a few weeks AFTER we were supposed to go and worry more. Seems that large crowded areas are where the virus is transmitted quicker and of course Disney is always crowded!
    Just not worth it.

Still going to FL but will just go to visit my parents and stay at their house.

  • I've been to disney world 2 years in a row and the only bug I've seen is the love bugs. Not one mosquito and I go during September and it always rains half the days we are there. I wouldn't worry especially if you plan on staying at a resort. Have fun I'm jealous. With having this baby I'm thinking we won't get our annual visit :/ we shall see though
  • They have actually just declared a state of emergency for the state of FL per world news. I definitely would not be taking the risk.

Again, I live in Orlando. Today it was in the 50's and will be very cool the next two weeks (sometimes close to freezing at night). No bugs.

the state of emergency is in southern FL (around Miami) so they can use funds to start preventative measures. They are being proactive.

I will go as far as saying I've never gotten a bug bite visiting a Disney park. They are meticulous and this is on everyone's radar in flordia.

To to each their own but this is probably the safest time to visit without bugs. I have more of a chance being bit getting in to my car In my driveway than at Disney.

  • I guess we are thinking even despite the bugs. There are people there from all over the world- since we don't know 100% about the virus and are learning new ways it could possibly spread. My brother is a doctor and works in infectious disease at his hospital. Maybe he is being extra careful because of me, but external signs of the virus are: rash, conjunctivitis. So who knows if someone touches something then you touch it, etc. Possibly being over cautious but better safe then sorry in our boat. We are fortunate to have my parents living 2hrs from Disney and go a couple times a year so maybe that's easier for me to pass on this trip because I know we are going again at Christmas (and were just there in October)

Exactly. The state of emergency is only for certain counties where travelers have returned with the virus. It allows the counties more funding for preventative measures.

Disney has great pest control. The CDC also said Friday there is no reason to avoid crowded or places with international travelers.

  • Yes for their Pineapple Dole Whip drinks...I want one now! But in all seriousness, I think it should be okay.
  • Buzzfeed interviewed two OB's from Orlando. I thought this was a pretty good interview.

And for for what it's worth, my husband is a physician. He feels that I'm safe for the near future.
