Late night RTT?

I thought it might be fun/helpful to do a late night random thought thread for all the time spent up for those dreaded nighttime feedings. Of course you can post any time, I just like having something to look forward to reading during the night and thought it might help anyone who is awake feel less lonely.

Re: Late night RTT?

  • I bought a rock n play and it arrived today. LO is currently sleeping in it. Looking forward to trying it out tonight. Although I am a little sad thinking about if we are successful because I love our nightly snuggles!

  • @GAgirlinSDakota I swear I didn't get the night sweats until I was about 2-3 weeks out! The rest of the time I've been freezing under a fuzzy blanket despite being in a 71 degree house. Stupid body
  • @kmo8986 hugs! It gets better, I too hate night times starting with trying to get my toddler to bed. Always a battle :( then after that exhaustion I get to stay up with the baby and hope he sleeps like... At all.
  • I'm so frustrated and torn. I don't produce enough to EBF so I've been supplementing, which is fine and dandy with me. But baby girl has got such tummy issues that her doctor switched her to soy formula and wants me to eliminate all dairy from my diet.

But my mind keeps asking, what if it isn't dairy? What if it was just the formula? What if it is something else in my diet?

So, I am leaning towards going to strictly formula to eliminate most of the variables... but I enjoyed breastfeeding (most of the time) and I'd like to think that I'm helping her health-wise. It's now been about 24 hours of only formula. My boob (the only one she'll nurse from) hurts so bad, even though I've pumped. And what do I do with the pumped milk if she can't have it? There isn't much, but throwing it away makes me want to cry... more.
  • @Rach8672 @BarrettJ89 I understand you both. Pumping is killing me. I literally get an ounce and supplement with formula. Its getting exhausting. And since she latched a few days ago she has terrible stomach issues and gas. I don't know what to do.

I dread the night time.  The rest of the time I feel mostly normal.  We snuggle, watch tv, leave the house occasionally, but at night I am dreading if she will sleep at all, for an hour, 2 hours, 3 is like a miracle.  Sometimes I just cry when I hear her start crying.
Same. Fine all day and waterworks at night. I know it's a combo of being exhausted and hormones, so I'm hoping it settles down in a couple weeks. If not I'm definitely talking to my dr about it at my next appt.
  • Apparently I'm getting to skip the postpartum night sweats. Instead, I can't get warm. It's 70* in this house, and I'm in sweats, huddled under a blanket, and shivering. I've been a hot-natured person my entire life. I've never been cold like this. I want my night sweats back!
I'm FREEZING all the time. I blame it on being used to having a little heater in my uterus all winter up until now. I've been bumping the heat up to 72! Warmer weather can't get here soon enough.

Does anyone else get super pissed off with the excessive amount of nipple stimulation ?? I'm pumping and supplementing. I freaking hate pumping and being confined to a cord plugged in to the wall. I'm hanging on by a thread and contemplating going 100 % formula , this is just too much time spent milking myself  .. Depressing as hell
I always have mad respect for the pumpers because I did if for the first few weeks with DS until he could latch and I hated it. It's such a lengthy process and I felt like a slave to it.
  • @BarrettJ89 I totally get it. With DS it took us months to figure out his allergies (wheat, dairy, eggs, nuts, and sesame), but once I cut those things from my diet he was a new baby. I also had to throw out an entire freezer full of milk not once, but twice, and I totally cried.
  • For now I'm freezing what I pump and she's strictly on formula (sighhhh). I'm going to give it a couple days to see if her tummy gets any better. If not, then I'll call the pediatrician again. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to start BF-ing again... at this point, if it's my diet that is making her miserable, I'd rather just eliminate that. I keep reminding myself that my 13 month old was formula fed and is extremely healthy, smart, big, and adorable ;) so I know DD will be fine if she only gets formula, but gosh, hormones have made me a sappy, wacky mess!
  • I am wondering if I will ever sleep soundly again. Any slight noise from LO and I am wide awake and she is the noisiest sleeper ever.  I am also wondering if it is her or me that smells like a mixture of milk and sweat that has been heated all day.

You'll never sleep as soundly as you once did.

My mom commented that DD smells like caramel and I was like I'm pretty sure that's just a combo of sweat and breast milk, but I'll take it.
  • @SDaniels19 YES! I don't notice it so much during the day but when I'm up breastfeeding at night I feel starving!

This. Thankfully my babe sleeps, but it's never a sure thing or consistent, and lately he's been cluster feeding, so it's like Russian roulette putting him down after feeding/rocking. I wish it would be morning already regardless of sleep as I just immediately feel better when it's morning!
My anxiety come 6:30pm goes through the roof dreading nighttime. LO is a pretty good sleeper...usually goes about 4.5-5 hours between feelings (formula fed...well above birth weight) but I know I won't sleep because every peep she makes wakes me up and all I do is check the time constantly trying to guesstimate when she'll wake up. It's terrible!!

  • For all the pumpers out there, I promise you it does get better! I pumped for a year with my first and was able to cut the pumping sessions down to twice a day, only morning and night after about 6 months. I know it seems like forever, but you will get into a rhythm and the number of sessions will drop. Pumpin Pals made a huge difference to me.

  • Anyones baby congested? My two week old suddenly is congested sounding. Normal newborn thing? I go see the dr in the morning but was curious if anyone else has this problem?
  • I'm considering leaving SO. He's a good guy, but some ugly shit went on in our relationship last January and I'm still not over it. I've tried. He's changed so much for the better. I just think it was too big of a breech for me to get past. Idk what to do. I'm trying to wait for the pp hormones to pass before I make a final decision.

  • @cali1710 my baby sounds congested at night. My midwife said it has something to do with milk getting up there when breastfeeding and that is normal. He doesn't seem to have any mucus but every night he sounds sick.

@Hipshaker me too. Ftm and getting a lot of judgement from in laws. It just seems to be the only way we get sleep and we are all happier for it.

  • Pumping is making me crazy too. DS is almost 6 weeks old and I feel like I have a clogged duct at least 1x/week. This NEVER happened last time. It's like my boobs forgot how to boob. And I decided early on that I will only pump to 6 months but will have a nice freezer full of milk to keep baby going for a while.

@Grace213 totally! Though I'm BF and pumping. The 12am feeding was fine and now here at 6 I have a huge area of clogged duct that I'm attempting to massage out while DS eats but it's basically the entire underside of my boob! Seriously ouch! I'm so sick of them already and DS is only 6 weeks old. Idk how I keep getting them and how they turn up so quickly

Poor DH, this guy is so stressed out right now tho he would never ever admit it. Too many gigantic life transitions all at the same time as becoming a dad. He quit smoking two days after DS was born and has stuck with it so it's been over 6 weeks now but I think he's hitting the point where his lungs are going to start....purging... All the yuck. He was coughing so much last night, just hope he doesn't get pneumonia from successfully quitting smoking, that would be the last thing he needs right now

@GAgirlinSDakota that sounds so stressful with a newborn and all those pp hormones! I hope you can easily figure out what is best for you and your kids and that you have a good support system if that means leaving your SO

edit: realized I wanted to add more and didn't want to do another post
  • My husband lost his job two weeks ago due to a management change at his company. I cry every day thinking about it. No severance. He's spending hours every day applying for jobs and getting his resume out there. So far nothing. Yesterday we had to take our son in for testing. Our new insurance from the marketplace sucks so we are going to get hit with a fat bill over this. But it's all we could afford on my income. I'm falling apart but can't let him see it. So now I hide in the bathroom and cry.
  • I'm down to my prepegnacy weight. Sure, this may sound awesome, but I still need to lose 60ish pounds to not be considered obese. It's going to be one hell of a long road.

  • In an attempt to get little one to sleep longer between feedings, when she cries out at night I come into her room, give her the pacifier and wait for her to cry out again.  So I am just curled up in her rocker waiting for her to want to eat.  This worked to get my son to go longer stretches at night and hoping it works for her too. I could use longer than 3 hours of sleep.
  • After two restful evenings for LO it looks like tonight is back to cluster feeding. This mama was looking forward to some sleep, I doubt toddler will cooperate tomorrow and allow for a nap. Heavy... Eyelids...
  • Cluster fed all day, not sleeping well tonight and got so stuffy and upset that the screaming started at like 5am and only stopped if hes tummy down laying on my shoulder, so we moved out to the couch to snuggle and hopefully get him some more sleep bc DH is sick and needs sleep not interrupted by screaming every 30 seconds, just hope LO and me don't catch it otherwise we're in for a super miserable household
  • I'm reviving this thread because it's currently 3am and LO woke up screaming but won't eat because he needs to poop. The only comfortable position for him right now is tummy down. So we are currently in his nursery (normally sleeps in a bassinet in our room right now) while he sleeps tummy down and I rock in the rocker cause I'm way too scared of SIDS to leave him like this.

  • @kvacmak Oh, I've been there! I wish LO would have found relief on his stomach, I would have gladly been okay with just rocking in his nursery while he slept.  We dealt with the gas/pooping issue around weeks 4-7, and still are, but it's gotten so much better.  LO will be 10 weeks this Wednesday.

I realized when my alarm went off at 5:15 this morning, that we need to get a move on with our upstairs remodel, or make the journey up and down stairs if we move DS up into his nursery.  He's in our bedroom that we have downstairs that has a joining room.  It's used as mine and DH's changing room and DH's computer desk is in there.  Well, it's where we both would get ready in the mornings if the other was sleeping, so the other wouldn't be bothered or woken up.  We put DS's bassinet in the office last week, to make a little more room for us to maneuver around, in the bedroom. Well,  I had to feel my way around the office this morning to grab my makeup, clothes, and other belongings and bring them into the bathroom, all because I couldn't turn a light in in there or our bedroom, as DS and DH were still sleeping. DH had to pick up the bassinet and move DS back into the bedroom once his alarm went off, because he wears glasses and would have never been able to get his way around in the dark.
  • @kmo8986 has the night time dread gotten any better for you? Every evening I get so upset and overwhelmed dreading the night. I'm 3 weeks postpartum and worried that it hasn't gotten any better yet I'm curious if the evening blues get more manageable as time goes on.
  • yes it has.  Little one has a pretty consistent schedule now at 5 weeks so I know what to expect.  It definitely helps.  She also is getting way better at going back to sleep.  @mrscammack

It gets better! Mine started to taper off around 3 weeks and now at almost 5 I feel almost normal again. If it doesn't ease up soon though, definitely talk to your dr.

Mine was horrible at 3 weeks and suddenly at 4 weeks it was a complete 180. She still wakes at night but usually is asleep at 9amd up to feed at 2 and then 6. So pretty good in comparison to week 3.
  • So last night at around 2am I look over at my little one and she is flailing her arms like crazy and making noises. I mean it looked like if she was able to get in a pool she could beat Phelps and win a gold medal kind of flailing. All because I wanted to try to see how she would do at night without her arms in the swaddle. I have answer...nope! Not ready! So tonight the flailing appendages will once again be on lockdown. Mommy needs more sleep.
