NT Scan

so who has had their NT scan done already?

Mine is scheduled for next week and they blocked off 2 hours for it!!  with my son I was seeing a RE so they just did it at their office and it took 15 minutes.  This time around I have to go to Maternal Fetal Medicine.  I cannot image what would take 2 hours!!? how long did yours last?  We did the blood work last week so it's not like they're going to be running labs.

Re: NT Scan

  • My MFM doc said to allow 45 minutes.
  • Loading the player...
  • Since it's done between 11-14 weeks, I suspect they will repeat bloodwork so you will be within the "time frame".
  • It's because you have to have a meeting with a dr afterwards so they can go through the results. I know at the mfm I go to it can be hard to get a dr in the right place at the right time. I go next week and I hope it's not too long because I'm going before I go to work and I have a staff meeting in the morning.

they gave me paperwork and I did the blood work from home and had to have it mailed in by a certain date.  I do not have to do any repeat blood work.
  • I just scheduled mine for the 29th - but they didn't tell me how long it would take. Mine is with a MFM too - do they usually go over the results with right then and there? I expected I would get a call with the results later...

  • Mine is scheduled only for an hour which includes a meeting post-scan with the doctor.
  • I was told to plan on being there for 90 minutes.
  • @Hummingbird125   you will receive the results right away!
  • When we did it for my son it took at least an hour because the little guy would not move into position. I remember the technician asking me to get up to walk to see if it would move him a bit. She kept saying, wow this little guy is stubborn lol It was nice little insight into what I was in store for!

Okay.. When I read this thread a while back I giggled like "whoa 2 hours crazy", then today happened. I was in the US room for about 2 hours. My baby would not get into position. I tried to lay on my right, then my left, then did some squats, then some jumping jacks...all on a full bladder. My little nugget is so stubborn already. It would look like it was in the right position, then curl right back up sucking on its hand. Being a FTM I did not even realize it could suck on its hand already...

  • I had my scan this morning. They had blocked off 30 minutes for the scan but we were lucky and baby was in the right position right off the bat. The tech had what she needed within the first 5 minutes. We got to "play" for the rest of the appt and got lots of pics of baby. Out  awesome ultrasound tech asked if we wanted her "grandma guess" as to baby's sex. She said she is 70% sure it's a BOY! We definitely aren't announcing that or anything but we can't wait to see if she is right!

  • Whoa. Mine took probably all of 9 minutes. But then I had to go get bloodwork. We also don't get the results right away.
  • How funny! My little peanut was upside down when the tech started the US but she jiggled my belly and baby turned :) it was so cool seeing he/she moving all around in there!
  • @AmandaG225 How far along are you? That's so cool that she guessed at the gender!

  • Mine was scheduled for an hour originally but ended up staying for TWO. There was a long wait though but what took even longer was my actual scan!! Baby needed to be in certain positions for them to measure things but would not budge. At first, baby was on his/her belly sleeping lol. I coughed, baby bounced a little but kept sleeping. Then sonographer told me to move quickly from side to side AND cough a lot. Baby finally woke up but was sitting up then standing. Finally, sonographer sent me to get bloodwork then asked me to come back...I came back, moved around, still couldn't get the baby in right positions. Sonographer told me to go get something to eat, drink, and to walk around the office for a bit. I did all of that while other patients came and left, lol! I was the last patient...finally baby at our THIRD try, laid down and sonographer captured what she needed. Still had to rotate her screen but she said it was finally good.
  • *lurking from July*
Every office does them a bit differently. I had the ultrasound and blood draw and the genetic ultrasound technician talked with us about the good markets she saw she went around. The we got the final results back a few days later.

They may have to reschedule if baby doesn't cooperate as they need to be fairly still and in a good position to check for the fluid so she did have to poke our little one a bit to get them to turn. Hope you all have great scans!

  • So we were told at our NT appt we would receive results a couple of weeks later. Baby did not cooperate but they did not offer to reschedule. She just told us to wait and do the quad screen at 17 weeks. Kind of frustrating.

  • At the practice I go to, the NT scan is scheduled for an hour with a perinatalogist, and then I have a regular appointment with my OB for an hour immediately following.  With DD, the perinatalogist and tech both guessed 90% we were having a girl.  I'm hoping they can make a good guess this time as well!

  • Car0liiine - my doc only offers them on Tues and you have to be between around 11-14 weeks.  I had mine done on 13w1d.  If LO wouldn't have cooperated, I wouldn't have been able to re-schedule because I would have been too far (after the cut-off).  Is it possible that's what happened with you?
  • My NT scan with a mini anatomy scan was 30 minutes. I also saw MFM for it. I was 12 weeks.

  • Mine was about an hour or so. First the tech came in and took a look. Then the doc came and she took a look. We also discussed my harmony test results and my risks. We ruled out doing an amnio and any other invasive tests.

  • I just got results back from mine.  Everything looks good, but I had a low papp-a (placental hormone) result (just at the borderline).  I was initially very stressed by this, but it seems like it means only a minimally increased risk for preterm labor, preeclampsia (sp?), and possible late miscarriage.  Anyone have any experience with these low papp-a results?  I think they have to tell you because there is some (although not concrete) evidence that you could have issues later in pregnancy...
  • @cepriccoI thought about creating a separate thread for low papp a results!!! NT scans and bloodwork came back all normal for DS, trisomy, etc. but I was told that even after my 20 wk anatomy scan, I needed to come back every 4-6 weeks (depending on how things are). I was told to maintain a healthy diet but there wasn't anything I could do to change this outcome. The baby will still take what he/she needs in terms of nutrition from your placenta. It just happens to some of us and with regular monitoring, I'll be okay, saying I'm still low risk. Then I regrettably googled low papp a and got so scared by forums/boards (don't do that and trust in your provider).

I was the same, all normal results except the low papp a!  They scheduled my 20 wk right away and said they may need additional monitoring after that depending on what 20 wk shows.  I have my monthly appt with my OB tomorrow so I'm sure we'll go over it some more.  Thanks for the response...relieved to know that it's somewhat common and that with regular monitoring things should be ok!

@cepricco and @AliKay20 :  I was the same, except that because of my age (33), the low Papp-A number put me in a higher DS category (1:200).  I did the Harmony NIPT test and won't find out results until probably middle of next week.  Making me fairly anxious! Everything else was normal and the NT measurement was 1.1.  Genetic counselor was reassuring but the anxiety is not going away.  Trying to be positive, it's a 99.5% chance that everything is fine. I had a 20 week anatomy scan scheduled today as well.

  • I'm doing this whole journey at a birth center.  They have to do all their imaging at outside clinics and no be will do the NT scan... They said I'd have to be referred to a maternal fetal medicine specialist to do the NT scan if I really wanted it.... It sounds expensive, I'm already fighting with my insurance as it is.... I'm 32.5 yrs old... They also suggested the Maternit21 but I hear the out of pocket is outrageous on it.  I thought the NT scan was standard like the anatomy US? I am disappointed :(

  • @jmknox  - Some practices have it standard and others dont bother with it.

My NT scan yesterday was with the MFM.  The baby was in the right spot so she got the measurements right away and then looked around for a while.  The Dr. came in and went over the measurements.  I was a bit confused because he said the measurements were 2.33, 2.25 and 2.4 (Same neck measurement just measured 3 times).  He said they were normal but in the high range.  From what I've read online under 3.5 is usually ok.  Did anyone else get their measurements?  I had to go to the lab for bloodwork and hopefully should hear results this week.

@bsckgb7 - I was measuring ahead at 13w4d so they really pushed that I needed to get the bloodwork done right away.  That 13w6d cut off is a real cut off.

  • @jmknox I was under the impression that most (if not all) NTs  were performed by MFM drs. Of course, I could be wrong about that. My anatomy scan will also be performed by a MFM Dr.

^^ This.  NT scans are done at MFMs around here.

ETA:  You don't have to switch your care to them, you can go just for the scan appointment.
  • Rather than start another NT thread, were your ultrasounds abdominal or TV?  I cannot for the life of me remember from when I had mine done with DD.
  • Mine was abdominal.  You should be far along to see abdominally (however, my doc said they would switch to TV if they needed too)

From what Ive read, they are all abdominal.

  • @ThisisNumber3 -I believe mine was performed when I was 13 weeks exactly, and on the form I had to give the lab when going for bloodwork (I snapped a pic of it before handing it off, lol), I see 1.4mm. CRL was 65.6.

  • Had to update that my Harmony test came back negative!  Still need to watch the low Papp-A result but such a relief to have that reassurance.  Maybe the MS will die down now, I couldn't tell if it was nerves or still lingering!

  • Thanks @mumblefrog86 !  The genetic counselor explained a bit what it could mean, but that there isn't any concrete evidence at this point of what it might mean.  I had cholestasis with my first pregnancy, so am hoping for a less eventful one with my second!
