Partial bed rest

not sure where in the world to put this so I started a new thread. I had searched a bit but there wasn't too much. It's very long, sorry.

Friday morning I woke up to a bit of spotting. It was brown, old blood but I called the dr anyway since I haven't had that at all so far (18 weeks today). They had me come in to do an u/s to check everything was okay. Baby was fine and cervix was closed but the placenta was still touching the cervix a little bit. The dr did an internal exam and everything was fine.

Spent the the rest of the day and Saturday being lazy. Woke up early yesterday to bright red blood. Nurse on call told me to go to the ER to be checked. Once again, baby was absolutely fine and the cervix was closed still but they weren't sure where the blood was coming from. My placenta is still touching my cervix (just a corner) but they won't say it's placenta previa necessarily because it's still a little too early to diagnose it as such.

So I was put on partial bed rest and pelvic rest. No lifting, no exercise, mostly sitting but can still get up and do stuff. I was cleared by the ER doc to work as long as I take it easy and don't pick up the kiddos (I work with 2 yr olds). I call today to make a follow up appointment and the doctor says I should be on complete bed rest (the ER dr called the on call ob for the center I visit to consult before telling me all this). OY!

Has as anyone else experienced this random bleeding or being put on partial bed rest? Any ideas? This baby is already being a problem child! It had better be really good once it leaves my body lol

Re: Partial bed rest

  • I don't have any experience with this but wanted to send you my good thoughts and prayers I know spotting can cause a lot of anxiety glad baby is okay though!

  • I'm sorry this happened, and hopefully it doesn't linger. I've has issues with bleeding/spotting since 13 weeks. On my 16 week US my placenta was lying on the cervix with the bleed under it. Dr said when the placenta or bleed is low like that it can cause a little more bleeding because it is close to the exit. At this point they watch the placenta because as the uterus expands the placenta can start shifting out of the way. Later on they get more concerned if it is still on the cervix, but I haven't gotten to that point to see what's up :). I can understand your frustrations with communication. All I can ever get out of my Dr is rest, rest, rest and water, water, water!
  • I don't have experience with the bleeding but I was on partial bed rest with my first. My warning is I misunderstood "partial" lol. I thought it meant I could move around and still walk, grocery store etc, in small doses, but no. My OB yelled at me because to her "partial" meant I was allowed to go from the bed to the bathroom to the couch...end of story. So I would definitely have them clear up their definition of partial for you, I wish you the best of luck though :( Invest in lots of books.

I was the same way at first! I told my dr I didn't like walking around and going to eat bc I would get a lot of pressure and tightness. He was quick to tell me I missed the point, and I could hang at the house and make myself lunch.
And yes to books. Or binge watch netflix :)
  • Think of bed rest as medicine you can take to help your baby.. It's a pain in the ass. Bed rest is a real possibility for me with twins. I've already been on pelvic rest for a perigestational hemorrage for a few weeks and that sucked enough. But whatever is best for my babies!
  • I don't have personal experience but had a friend with previa. I know it is stinky but listen to the doctor and do the bed rest at home. Unfortunately, if you keep bleeding, you will be doing your bed rest in the hospital. (((Hugs)))
  • Thanks ladies. I just hate that I was told one thing and then apparently that was wrong. I do promise that I'm not allowed to do anything at home (per my mom and husband) and I sat for 85% of my work day today just playing with the kiddos. Hopefully tomorrow everything goes okay and they tell me I'm fine. So far any spotting has been very minimal and back to being old blood. This whole "feeling helpless" thing sucks though! I'm a strong woman! Lol
  • Sorry this is happening, no experience, but sounds like full rest is how to play it safe. Hope this problem doesn't linger for you and baby keeps growing strong!

  • I don't have expierence with the bleeding but I am no stranger to bed rest. I was put on bed rest with my now 4 yr old from 13 wks all the way until he was born at 35 weeks. Mine was do to incompetent cervix. Mine was strict bed rest meaning I could shower once a week for 5 mins get up to use the bathroom thats it. I had to have a cooler by me with all the food I would eat for that day. It sucked but if it meant my babie would be okay I would do it all over again. I was also on hospital bed rest for a month. I found hospital bed rest better because I had nurses to talk to at home I had no one until hubby came home and he was to tired from working two jobs. Plus in the hospital I ate a whole lot better there than at home. But 24 wks that I did bed rest was so worth it. It is very hard I read I was on the internet watched netflix and started to paint. That was pretty hard laying down. Hopefully everything will get better for you but you can do it.
  • @presh116 Holy cow, that sounds intense. Do you expect to have this happen again then? I hope not, but whatever's best for baby, right? Hang in there ladies!

  • Thank you ladies! Went in for another scan and everything looks good. They did find a hematoma that is causing the spotting that didn't show up before. No more partial bed rest, just no exercising, no sex, and take it easy. I can work, lift the kiddos if I need to (I won't unless necessary) and do stuff around the house/run errands as long as I'm not moving around for hours.

now to do some more research on hematomas! Lol

There is a old thread I think it is titled SCH or subchorionic hematoma. There are a few of us who have/ have had them. You may find some good info/ support there. I believe last week or two weeks ago someone talked about doing a weekly check in. Glad that everything looked good on your scan today that is awesome!

ETA: I found the thread! Hope you find it helpful/supportive https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12644826/subchorionic-hematoma-sch
  • I had about the same thing at the first of the year (I was only 11 weeks at the time) and was diagnosed with a VERY large hematoma. I've been out of work since January 5th and on partial bedrest also. I gushed blood at the ER on the 5th of January and have been passing old blood since. Just found out that we are having another girl! Which has boosted my emotions but it's still scary. I go to the Dr every week  (one week my regular Ob the next week my high risk OB) just to keep track of the hematoma and amount of bleeding. From what they told me it's more common than you think.
  • Thank you for the link! I'll check it out after work today.

No mention of another appointment yet, but I was already scheduled for my anatomy scan on the 15th so I'm guessing that's soon enough for them at this point. Just hoping it resolves itself soon!

I'm not sure what you were told was necessarily "wrong" but different doctors will have different thresholds for advice regarding bed rest, partial bed rest, pelvic rest etc... same with pretty much everything else we're told (ex. some docs say eat all the lunch meat and sushi you want, other will advise under no circumstances) Really glad that you were given the information you needed and that baby is okay!!! hang in there and keep us updated if anything changes

  • Look at the website, keepemcooking.com there is a forum to support moms on bedrest.
  • this topic also makes me a little ragey because I've read a lot of articles about how bed rest is total bullshit... and there's no evidence based proof that it prevents pre term labor... I'm sure there are times when it's necessary but it seems to also be largely fear-based and just adds to the notion that pregnant women should sacrifice anything and everything for the sake of the baby from not eating a piece of lunch meat to literally not moving. If a doctor prescribes this, take a few moments to ask questions and feel free to look up literature regarding the efficacy of bed rest.

I get what you are saying but for a hematoma the bedrest is more for preventing more bleeding, which can up the risk of miscarriage, than it is to prevent preterm labor.
