I've also known a Kimber IRL, and she always went by Kim. Forever, I assumed her name was Kim as a standalone or short for Kimberly. Once I did find out it was short for Kimber, she told me she also got the "Timberrrrr!" wisecracks all the time. She was not a fan of her own name. I'm saved from eyerolling this name only because I've read a book with a female character by that name so I have somewhat of a positive association. I'd use Kimberly over Kimber tho, for sure.
Fun fact, my phone keeps trying to auto correct 'Kimber' to 'Limber'. Not saying autocorrect should be the end all be all for using names, but when autocorrect always thinks your intending to use another word, I might consider that a hint.
I like Kimberly better, but FWIW, I knew a Mom Kimberly who named her daughter Kimbre and I thought she made the name up so her kid could be named after her.
This is not all that relevant but the name Kimber was driving me nuts, reminding me of a doll/ cartoon younger sister. I kept thinking of Barbie but that's Skipper (not all that far off). Google reminded me that Kimber was the youngest sister and member of Jem and the Holograms. The red headed one. She plays a piano key guitar
As much as I loved Jem I wouldn't use it as a full name. It will always sound like the name of someone's cutesy little sister. Fine for NN though. And if/when she wants to transition she can.
Being a Kimberly myself I'm gonna say Kimberly 100% and I'm glad my parents decided on Kimberly and not kimber (no offense lol). As a child my NN was Kimmy and now it's Kim. You could definitely do Kimber as a NN but it's just NMS.
The nurse at my OB's office is named Kimber. I had never heard this name before, and personally would pick Kimberly. But she's very nice, and it is a real name.
It must be a real name because I also am related to a Kimber. I've always secretly liked it.
That is not the diagnostic criteria for identifying a "real name". I'm related to a Kodith. That doesn't make it real. It makes Kodith's mom delusional.
I dont see anything wrong with naming her Kimberly and opting to call her Kimber as a nickname. So atleast she has the option to be Kim or Kimberly if Kimber isnt working out for her.
Re: Kimber or Kimberly?
Kimberly is a very nice name.

If it's a girl, Kimberly.
I've only heard of male Kimbers. Kimber is fine for a boy.
ETA Now I'm trying to find where I heard the male name Kimber, I thought he was a newscaster. But found transsexual porn actress Kimber James.
