adding formula into the mix.

i am thinking of starting baby on formula, but I just don't know where to start. he still eats on demand, maybe every 2 hours or so. he is always sucking on his hands and I just feel like I am not making enough milk for him. Any recommendations as to a formula to start him on, and your stories If you've done this before? I still want to breast feed and pump as much as I can. I just want him to stay fuller.

Re: adding formula into the mix.

  • I don't have experience introducing formula, but I would talk to your pedi about this. I would guess you don't have a low supply, but I can't know that for sure.  My LO has been sucking her hands a lot too, but it's not because she is hungry. She has just started sucking her thumb and she has been sucking on everything she can get in her mouth. My guess is that it feels good on her gums and it's also her way of self soothing. She's been sucking her thumb during naps recently. I have tried feeding her when she does that and she is not interested. We are also still feeding on demand. Sometimes she wants to eat every 2 hours and sometimes she'll go 3-4. Is your LO still gaining well and having enough wet diapers?

  • yes he is gaining and has a lot of wet diapers but not as much poop at all. I will talk to my pedi. how much is your LO drinking at a time?

When she takes a bottle, about 3-3.5 oz. she has recently stopped pooping as often too. She used to poop with every feeding, now it's every other day, maybe once a day. I think that not know how much they eat is one of the hardest parts of breastfeeding.

Eta: I should have clarified in my first post a little, she does suck her hands sometimes when she is hungry, though it's generally accompanied by fussing if she's hungry.
  • I switched to formula when my daughter was 1 month because I wasn't producing enough milk for her. I just switched her over, no transition. She had zero problem maybe because she was so hungry and she didn't care at that point. While I breastfeeding though I'd feed her every 2 hours but with formula now it's about every 2.5-3 hrs not a huge difference but she now does sleep through the night now. Maybe breastfeed her and if she still seems hungry try giving her an ounce of formula, but like pp said might want to check with your doctor first
  • I had to start my LO on formula after one month of breastfeeding due to some medical problems on my side. I was able to pump for another week after stopping bf'ing and mix each bottle half and half until I moved to 100% formula. He had no problems although it broke my heart to be unable to breastfeed. At the time we feed 3 oz every 2 hours. Now at 4 months we feed 4 oz every 3 hours during the day and 5-6 oz in his bottle right before bed. So he gets about 30oz a day. Our Pediatrician said roughly 2-2.5oz per pound per day.
  • Mine is breastfed on demand also. His fists are constantly in his mouth, he's got a few toys that's he tries to chew on, and given the chance he'll slobber all over our hands too. My husband thought he was teething, but oral exploration is a normal part of development at this age. I've also read that breastfed babies can go up to a week without pooping before it's considered constipation. Definitely talk to your Dr, but it sounds like you're doing great. And if formula's what you choose that's great too
  • I just wanted to add that we EBF (also feed pumped milk while I'm at work) and my girl only poops like once per week. Our pedi said that breastfed babies digest most of whats in the breastmilk so they don't have to poop as often. When your LO poops is he in pain? Or is it a normal yellowish poop? If it is, the pooping isnt an issue!! You make whatever decision youre comfortable with for your baby---talk to your pedi as PPs suggested and go with your gut :)
