Experience With 3D/4D Ultrasounds?

Hi Everyone!
I went to a 3D/4D ultrasound clinic at 15 weeks (5 weeks early before my doctor would do a gender scan). Has everybody had positive experiences with these? A friend of mine went and was told girl early but ended up with boy at 20 weeks! Some other research I have done online mirrored this scenario. We were told girl, but I am not sure if I am entirely convinced yet! Either way, we will be happy. We are all approaching that time to find out, so I know everyone is as anxious as me!

Re: Experience With 3D/4D Ultrasounds?

  • I know two people who went to these places and had this happen (both told girls, both ended up having a boy, both had gender reveals for the girls). I know one or two that went and their results were correct. It just depends on if you get an experienced tech or not. And the 3d/4d has nothing to do with revealing the sex of the baby. They just had those machines. By now it seems most ob offices have those machines. We had a 3D done at 10w and 24w with our oldest and at 30 some weeks with our youngest. Just part of the routine ultrasound. They just flip the switch to turn it on. Tech's don't need it to tell the sex.

  • I went this past Sunday I was 15+2 with twins. She said they were twin girls...I go to the dr February 15th so I will have to let you know if she was correct. I feel like she was right for the first baby, but I didn't feel like she was positive on the second baby. She did flip the switch for 3D which was awesome!
  • Thank you for both inputs!
  • Just like regular ultrasounds to determine sex, the longer you wait the better. Before a certain point, it is a guessing game.
  • @DominiqueU when my SIL was pregnant she posted the 3D ultrasound of our niece and someone commented about how beautiful the baby was. My SIL responded that if her baby looked anything like that when she was born it would be horrifying. I agree! They're not cute. They're creepy.

  • We went to one with DD. We were told girl and she was right :). She flipped it over to 4d for us and it was amazing. It was a really cool experience and totally worth it. We're doing it again with this one, but we wait until about 17 weeks. We did it at 17 with DD too. I noticed my dr's office now offers the same service so we're going to compare prices and then choose.
  • I agree elenabrent and DominiqueU  super creepy. H and my mil both want one though, so hopefully with the recent studies on u/s and safety I can deter them from one. I almost cringe when I see them.
  • we did 3D/4D ultrasound at 25 weeks with DD. This was my email synopsis about my disappointment, LOL:

Baby didn't behave and was bent in half with its legs over its head as usual. Couldn't really
do the 4D that much because the cord and legs were making the picture
fuzzy. Even after getting up/moving around and getting a drink of water, baby didn't really change position.

The 2D pix were ok but not as nice as ones from the actual Dr's
office. Coolest thing was hearing and seeing the heartbeat again.

The 4D pix of the face were kind of disturbing as there wasn't much
    fat yet.

  • I have had a 3d done of all three boys. My first and third were around 30wks. My second we went in around 20wks to find out the sex because H wasn't going to be able to make it to my anatomy scan. I will be the odd man out and say I love them. I know they are kind of creepy but I don't care lol.

I would be leery of sex determination at 15wks. None of my Dr's would even take a guess at 17wks.

  • I did mine at 13 weeks for my last 3 they were all correct. Girl. Boy. Girl.
  • Am I alone in thinking the 3D/4D ultrasounds look really creepy? I think I prefer the is-it-a-baby-or-UFO grainy quality of regular ultrasounds to the way too real 3D ultrasounds. Also, what's the fourth dimension in a 4D ultrasound?

3D is a still picture. 4D is when they record a video or you see real time movement.
  • @Kater-cole thanks! I was worried there was another dimension I didn't know about ;)

  • I just had an early gender ultrasound & was told it's a boy. 15 weeks at the time and I'm now second guessing how accurate it actually is.

*sex. You'll know for sure at your anatomy scan. just hold out another 4-5 weeks.
  • I had a gender scan at 16 weeks and there was no doubt I'm having a boy. We even double checked just to be sure and he is all boy. Lord help me.
  • If I see "gender" when we discuss this topic.......one.....more.......f*cking......time.....
