Boy or girl? Ultrasound picture

I am 19w3d but baby is measuring 20 weeks. Ultrasound tech didn't want to give me a confirmation of sex. She says girls could have a buldge? Maybe umbilical cord? I'm so confused.

  • If the tech wasn't confident there's not much that you can do other than ask the doctor if they have a better guess. They are, after all, the professionals.

Babies don't always cooperate. With my son the guy at my A/S told me boy but that he wasn't positive so he wouldn't go painting the nursery blue. My doc has a machine in her office and did a quick check at my next appointment and was able to confirm he was in fact a boy. But had she not had one in there we would have been team green.

  • Ask your doc, I most certainly can not tell you more than he can.

I agree with pp, this is a call for your OB, but thank you for not posting a pic! Sorry we can't help.

ETA: just realized maybe you meant to post a pic and didn't or it's not showing.

Not true! We can't give her an answer to the gender, but we can definitely offer advice and perspective!

It sounds to me, that your tech couldn't tell. I'm hoping this is because of the position of the baby, not because she is really that inexperienced. I would ask your doctor for clarification at the next appointment. Some offices have the policy that techs aren't allowed to tell you, instead, you need to wait to talk to the doctor. However, I would think that if this was true in your specific case, she probably would have told you.

My experience from having many friends with babies, is that the "I couldn't tell" ultrasounds have more often turned out to be girls. But truly, there is really no way to know by what your tech told you. It sounds to me like you would like to be told the gender. If the doctor can't help you out at the next appointment, I would just go to a local ultrasound place. (The one near me starts at $99 per season.)

I'd imagine your doctor would cooperate with you and maybe do a quick scan to see what the sex is. My office does all the ultrasounds in house and while the anatomy scan is not intended to find out sex, they will let you know the sex, even if it means doing another quick scan.

Our babe is a boy but the tech was telling us she technically isn't allowed to say she's 100% sure either way. Boys are SO obvious because girls do not have anything that even remotely looks like a penis by the time the anatomy scan comes around. The cord was also distinctively different than his penis and she actually managed to get both in the same shot.

She said that it can be hard to be 100% with girls because a penis can be flopped over into baby's belly, which pulls his scrotum into the classic "three lines" that signifies a girl.

Unfortunately babies can be EXTREMELY stubborn in ultrasounds and won't always reveal their sex. It's not the tech's fault, they do try to get baby to move when getting all the measurements they need, but they can't force baby to cooperate.
  • OP did you take the picture down? Or was one never posted? Either way my anatomy scan was at 18+4 and our tech said girl. The picture is very clear, and looks nothing like our boy pictures.
