Supplementing Nursing System

Has anyone used one? I've been working on getting my milk supply up right now. Unfortunately, my 14 week old baby girl has never been able to latch. When we were in the hospital, we worked with two LC and neither of them were able to get her to latch. She fought it every time. I've been deeply saddened by the fact she won't nurse and in the meantime, my supply has gone down dramatically. My boobs used to be super full. I've been working with a rep from LLL and she told me to pump 6 times a day. But I can't because I went back to work and we don't have a designated area -- which is something I need to talk to my boss about. Now, I'm at a point where I would like to try again but even if I fail, I want to get her as much breastmilk as possible so she can get all of the health benefits because that's most important to me.

Re: Supplementing Nursing System

  • I did use an SNS, but we used it on our finger because she wasn't latching correctly. So that made it more frustrating for us. I don't know if you have tried a nipple shield, but that helped my little one latch in the beginning and we were able to stop using it after a little bit. Also, definitely talk to your employer, they have to make an area for you that is not a bathroom.

  • I have zero to add about the sns but could baby be tongue tied? My son was. We corrected it 2 days after he was born. His latch was much deeper afterward
  • cbolton19 Thank you. We've worked out a place for me to pump as of today. Also, when I was in the hospital, we tried a nipple shield but she seriously fought it. My lactation consultant told me to try to get her to latch while she's on her way to sleep or just waking up. I'm going to give that a whirl this week.

  • Awww that is great that you have a place to pump! I would definitely try the shield again. Good luck!! Keep us updated.
  • My daughter had a rough time in the hospital latching, but I had a fabulous nurse who taught me some tricks. If you rub the roof of their mouths with your pinky finger it gets their sucking reflex going, maybe try that or a paci and then make a quick switch with your nipple. This worked for us and I still use it when she gets herself all worked up and cranky to calm her down and get her latched on.
  • cbolton19 sarapagan I tried last night while she was relaxed and she sucked for about 5-8 minutes without crying. I think she lost interest because she wasn't hungry at the time but we've made some progress. My husband and I were super excited and I texted my lactation consultant right after. I'm going to try again today and see what happens. I'm hoping for gold! :)
