TTC after 35

Anyone had a HSG test?

I'm scheduled for a HSG test on Thursday after years of TTC and I've been on Clomid for three months (but not this month due to the test). I'm about to turn 37 and hoping for some positive results. I know everyone is different but has anyone stopped Clomid, had a HSG test and had a BFP soon after? Thanks!

Re: Anyone had a HSG test?

  • I didn't get pregnant, but I did have my HSG test a few months ago.  And I'm not going to say this to scare you-- just prepare you.

For some people, it's not painful, but for some (me) it hurts a lot.  Make sure you take whatever they recommend for pain (ibuprofen, probably) before the procedure, and make sure you have some down time afterwards.  And remember that as soon as the procedure is over, it stops hurting!  (Cramping is normal the rest of the day, but the pain stops.)

So be ready to breathe, and ready to tell yourself "do not kick the doctor in the head," and have something nice and relaxing planned afterwards, likely involving chocolate.

And yes, a freshly flushed pair of tubes does increase your fertility for the next couple months!
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • Well I was supposed to have one yesterday. I got there and took all my pre-procedure meds. When they asked if I had had intercourse in the last week I said yes and they refused to do the procedure! My Dr was so upset. She said she has never heard of someone being turned away because of that before especially since you do it 7-10 days after getting your period so chances of ovulating during that time are low. And, I had a pregnancy test done on day CD8 to make sure, not to mention that I personally haven't ovulated for almost 2 months. So there is no chance at all that I am pregnant. I was so frustrated. I guess I'm just saying this to give you the heads up in case you were not told to hold off on doing the BD. If I had known I would have just lied about it but oh well. I got to be all doped up on Valium for no good reason and took like 4 pills for antibiotics that were totally wasted as well. Yay for putting useless meds into my system!

To your point I have been told that HSG can possibly increase your chances of getting a BFP but I wouldn't bank on it. Also not sure how going off clomid will effect you but if you need clomid to ovulate it may be a no go month for you. All the HSG really does to help with getting pregnant (from my research) is kind of lube things up and possibly make your lining a little more "sticky" and possibly clear out any minor adhesion's that might have been messing with implantation. Bottom line is its a diagnostic procedure not a fertility treatment. Maybe you will get lucky though! Im personally crossing my fingers that this next month will be my "lucky" month and I dont have to go back for another try at the HSG next cycle ha ha.
  • I am so sorry... I have heard stories of HSG increasing fertility so you never know.  My HSG was akward but not painful. Never heard of them giving you valium for it but hey I wouldn't turn it down! I have heard from friends that had blockages that it is painful then. Now a hysteroscopy where they look at the lining of your uterus... that was super painful!

I had a BFP (our first and only) after my first HSG (unfortunately it was a CP). My OBGYN recommended TTC like crazy afterwards and it worked for us the following cycle. I just had a second HSG, but am on BCP for IVF cycle. FX for you!
