Induce a period before Letrozole?

I'm going to call my doctor today or tomorrow but just a quick question while I think of it - do any of you know if you need to have a period before starting Letrozole? It worked out that I had a natural period when I originally started, but after a break I'm wondering if I'll need to induce one before going back on. Assuming I will, but it would make it a lot easier if I could just pick up my Rx and start!

Re: Induce a period before Letrozole?

  • When i do not ovulate and dont have af for a long time, my doctor wants to test for hcg and progesterone and if they are both negative then induce AF w provera before starting letrozole. I start letrozole at CD3. But i would also like to know if you can skip that.

  • I don't think it would be wise. Even though you haven't ovulated, your uterine lining has been building up. If you haven't shed that lining in several months, I doubt it would be an ideal medium for implantation. You want a nice fresh lining full of wonderful new blood vessels that will properly nourish your baby. Some women get pregnant soon after birth or after a D&C for this reason. I mean, I'm not a physician and this would be a good question for your RE, but from my knowledge base I think it would be a good idea to induce menstruation before starting a new cycle of fertility medications.

  • Thanks. After I posted I was thinking that, but I thought I had read somewhere that it was ok to go straight to it. I'm on CD 31 now with no sign of AF. Just getting impatient! Will update when I talk to my RE's office.

  • Yeah for sure I had to force aunt flow to show before I started my first cycle of Letrozole. She said after 32 days, it was time to induce it with provera. Waiting is the freaking WORST!

  • Hello, I recently had to induce AF with Provera then follow with Letrozole and had asked my doctor if inducing a period was necessary, obviously all doctors will have a different opinion and everybody's cycle needs are different, but she had told me that it was necessary due to the lining build up.
  • Just an update, I spoke to my RE's office today and I'll definitely start Provera before going back on Letrozole. So, my husband's going to get tested this week, then a few weeks after that I'll get my bloodwork done, start Provera, have an HSG (nervous!!) and finally be back to the Letrozole/Ovidrel combo. I thought we'd just be taking a short break but when all's said and done it'll be 2.5 months!! I'm getting all impatient!

  • @LizzieJ13 My situation is very similar to yours, I also took a month off from Letrozole and IUI becuase of HSG. Because of my PCOS, that break took longer than a month but it was okay. My HSG experience was not bad at all, it was super quick  and nothing unbearable. I took 600mg of ibuprofen though . It is great that you are having progress with the tests. Good luck and FX for you !
  • Thanks @ZoeFer, I'll stock up on the ibuprofen before my HSG :) Good luck to you too!
