3rd Trimester

How is a visit to Labor & Delivery triage billed?

Hi all-

If you have been to L&D triage for monitoring, specifically I went for an extended NST, I am just wondering how it was billed?  I will call the hospital tomorrow to see if they bill it as regular care, urgent, or emergency.  Just wondering if any of you knew how it was billed for you.  In my case I was in my OB clinic on the outpatient side and they moved me over to L&D on the inpatient side after an hour because Chloe has a prolonged deccel in her HR.  I wasn't paying for the other visit as this is part of my OB care, but now I am wondering if I will owe a copay since they moved me over to triage.  Since I will be getting these NSTs twice a week and she will likely misbehave everytime I sure as hell don't want to have to pay a ridiculous copay twice a week just for the monitoring.  I was there for a little under 2 hours.

 Thanks...

  • Our triage visits are billed as ER visits.  Glad she's ok!  Little stinker.

  • Mine was billed emergency and it was a total of almost $600, but we had to pay a $150 copay and insurance paid the rest.

    wow!

  • I was billed as a separate charge from my prepaid (and completely paid)  OBGYN package. It did come up as an emergency type of coverage. My insurance covers 90% of pregnancy related visits so the remaining 10% is what I received a bill for.

  • Um, yeah.  My 4 hour visit was 3k.  The 5 minute u/s was 1,500 itself.  Thank goodness I have a great insurance plan.

  • I was there twice for PTL. I was monitored and put in a room and was there for a little over an hour each time. I was given a terb shot each time and a fetal fibro-whatever test. Both times the bill came out to about $600. My insurance covered it all though.

It's just going to depend on how your insurance takes it. If they take it as part of your OB care, you won't pay anything. But, it might be considered "emergency care" (which is what my insurance took it as) and you might have to pay a co-pay for each visit. My visits were billed separately.

  • im wondering the same thing because I went friday because I thought my water broke.  im hoping its covered under our maternity plan because everything is 100% covered.

if it counts as an ER visit, Ill get a bill for $20 - our ER copay. If its billed as a regular appt, we'll get a bill for 10%.

  • Thanks ladies.  I will definitely need to find out because I am being monitored twice a week and if it is billed as ER care it will be $150 copay each time which would be a possible $1500 total if I have to be monitored in triage after every NST for the next 5 weeks.  It would be one thing if it was serious, but both my docs today on the in-patient side said "she is 29 weeks, she will do that".  When I was still in the hospital she "failed' her NST several times and had to leave the probe on longer than 20 minutes.  Nothing was ever wrong with her.
