car seat for toddler

Hey Mamas,
I need car seat recommendations for a 2 year old please. The seat she's currently in is a hand-me-down from big sis. Not only is it getting to the end of it's life, it is also huge.
I'm looking for something with a great safety rating of course. But also need one that is as slim (narrow) as possible, as we will have 3 in the back seat come April.
Thanks!

  • Diono car seats are known for being slim fit, though not particularly kind on the budget.

We have 3 of these and forgo the infant seat. My back wouldn't allow me to carry an infant seat around, so we baby wear.

  • We got DD1 a Diono Ranier and it's pretty slim. I think there is another model that's even slimmer. She seems super comfy, we were able to do a 16 hour road trip with her sleeping a lot. It's definitely not the cheapest, but not the most expensive car seat out there either. We liked the safely features it has (full steel frame, adjustable height wings by the head, higher limits) but go online and do some research to see what fits your needs and budget.

  • If you go to a big box type baby store (BRU, BBB) they usually have tester seats that you can put in your car to make sure they fit safely in your car, especially with other seats. My daycare family had to do this with their small car because unfortunately(?) all but 2 or 3 extended rear facing options were too tall to fit at the correct seat angle. They'd probably appreciate a call ahead to find out if they have a less busy time to devote a worker to you, but I think you can technically go anytime.

  • We have a Britax boulevard click tight which has really good safety rating and super easy to install but it is fairly large. I second trying out the install in your vehicle prior to purchase. Ours fit in my highlander and my husbands F-150 so not exactly small cars.

I have and love the Diono Radian RXT. It wasn't cheap, but it is a workhorse. Install has never been a problem, but we do use the angle adjuster. It is heavy, but we have traveled with it anyway. DD1 will easily rear face until 4 in it, and we will definitely be getting another one for DD2 when she is too big for the infant seat.

ETA: The radian is also pretty much the go-to seat for three-across installs. My former coworker had his triplets in the back of his impala in radians, but they're supposed to fit three-across in smaller cars too.

  • Thanks everyone for all the replies :-)
  • We too have the Diono Radian! Love it - fits slim and will be getting another for this baby.
  • Check csftl.org or their Facebook group. You don't say whether you FF or RF your 2 year old (RF is much safer, so definitely RF if possible.) If you've decided to FF, you might check to see if the new Graco tranzitions (with a Z) is as thin as the Dionos.

We recently turned her FF. She just turned 2 1/2 and has been a car seat screamer since birth. Lol I couldn't handle it anymore. Turning her around helped. Thanks for the suggestions :-)
  • I have a much larger vehicle (Honda Pilot), but I have Evenflo tribute sport seats three across. They're relatively narrow, and easy on the pocketbook as well- I paid 50$ or less on sale at Amazon for mine.
  • Whatever you do, don't buy the Britax Advocate. Ginormous!!
