So this is a question for STMs who have already been through the diaper choices. I went into Target and stood and stared at the huuuuge variety of diapers and felt completely overwhelmed. They want me to register for a brand of diaper before my baby shower. Any advice? What kind worked for you or what didn't you like about the ones you tried?
Re: Best diaper brands?
Edit to add: we loved the pampers because our little guy has skinny legs and pampers fit slimmer.
This time, I will probably just stick to pampers, though.
That being said, I hated Pampers from the beginning. I was gifted a box of size ones and I couldn't stand the smell of them. DH used them when he changed her diapers
ETA: at home we cloth diapered from the time her umbilical cord fell off. Disposables were for babysitters or when leaving the house. Cloth diapers are super easy for the first 6 months if they are breast fed, it isn't until later when they start eating real food that they are a bigger pain to clean.
Ive even tried the parents choice brand from walmart and they worked really well surprisingly for how cheap they are if your on a tight budget.
I second PPs' opinions of Huggies for baby boys- they leak and were a pain. No idea if they work for baby girls.
Did you register for cloth? I did. My mom put on the invitation that we were cloth diapering so we wouldn't receive a ton of diapers we wouldn't use/have to return. Cottonbabies.com is a great site and you can register through them as well. I've gotten 8 bum genius pocket snaps for $10.50 each during their seconds sales. Can't beat that when they normally cost $18 or so.
For when we do use disposables, we like Target Up & Up for daytime and Pampers Baby Dry for overnight. They've worked great for both of our kids.
It's funny to see the previous generation react to modern cloth. My dad was hilarious. At first he was like "why in the world would want to do that?!" Then after showing him what they are like now and explaining to him what the benefits were he was all about it. My mom is a little iffy on washing them at her house when we visit but is totally open to seeing them in action before deciding.
1) I haven't used the honest companies diapers but was given a line of their products at a shower. The baby bum wash spray is horrendous and makes me question the line. My LO would scream bloody murder when I used it, didn't think anything about it then one day after my happy baby getting wiped turned to screaming in pain baby when sprayed, I decided to try it myself. Holy mother of eff that stuff burned!!! There are reviews online about it, it has witch hazel and I'm used to that but I've never experienced anything like it. Just a general PSA that their diapers might be good but stay away from the spray bum wash!
2) no one bought us cloth diapers despite registering and all our family was only moderately supportive. They said they didn't want to waste their money on stuff we wouldn't use. I love cloth, we've been CDing full time for almost 2 years and have had *maybe* 1/2 dozen cloth blowouts. Real elastics hold that sh!t in! Especially compared to the 2/3 times a day blowouts I had with huggies while on vacation, just should have brought the cloth.
I agree with the huggies are big mistakes!! (opinion) I used pampers also but for the opposite reason...my daughter was a chunky monkey and they were the only diapers that fit good enough but weren't tight!! Maybe that just means they are the best?! lol all diapers have their ups and downs and you kind of just have to try some and figure out which works best!! We ended up using Sams club brand, members mark, because they come in larger quantities and fit just like pampers!! However they don't start until a 1...so we will start out with pampers again!!
Edited because words are hard!!
I wish I had the time and determination to go cloth.
With blowouts, I feel like it's going to happen no matter what, especially during the early months when it's very liquid. If they are lying down or angled a certain way, it will go all the way up their back. I tried to size up to control the situation and it worked at times.
We tried Huggies but like PP mentioned the gel/silicone balls thing really grossed me out. I had to peel it off of DD's private part once and it was just not a pleasant experience. I also read it on the news that babies can get burns from it.
I stocked up on a TON of diapers and still have some leftover for this baby. My daughter was in 1's for a long time, 3's for a long time and she's been in 4's for what feels like forever now. Size 2 diapers are the dumbest sized diapers ever (don't buy too many of these!). I had 5 boxes leftover and just exchanged 2 of the Target brand for bigger sizes over the weekend. I'm sure I'll have even more leftover after this baby.
