Best diaper brands?

So this is a question for STMs who have already been through the diaper choices. I went into Target and stood and stared at the huuuuge variety of diapers and felt completely overwhelmed. They want me to register for a brand of diaper before my baby shower. Any advice? What kind worked for you or what didn't you like about the ones you tried?

We used pampers swaddlers for the first 3/4 weeks, after that we transistioned to cloth. When my LO was 3 months old we visited my parents and I used huggies so I wouldn't have to do laundry - big mistake. Tons of leaks and blowouts. Next trip to my parents we used pampers with no leaks.

Edit to add: we loved the pampers because our little guy has skinny legs and pampers fit slimmer.
  • Different diapers work well for different babies, but we are firmly in the Pampers camp. My second choice would probably be target brand, but mainly for toddlers. We gave away the Huggies we had because they always leaked.

  • I used pampers newborn at first then switched to Luvs. Huggies always leaked for both of my boys. Pampers swaddlers are a good choice too. Luvs are fairly cheap, & not to be a weirdo but I liked the way they smelled too, unused of course ;)

  • We are a pampers household also.  Love the swaddlers with wetness indicator for the newborn days.  Huggies leaked and then little silicone-type balls would be all over my kids skin...gross.  I've also tried the honest co and 7th generation, they aren't bad but do leak if they get full.  Not that I'm advocating leaving your baby in a soaked diaper all day, but there are times when you are out or otherwise in a pinch and can't change the diaper as frequently as you'd like and you want to have one that you can trust.  Otherwise it's outfit changes all around!

  • I love the pampers swaddlers. I have been stocking up. Huggies and luvs always leaked with my first son. Surprisingly enough, with him, the walmart store brand was pretty good, too. They never leaked and back then, I had trouble affording the pampers.
This time, I will probably just stick to pampers, though.
  • I know there are some eye rolls on this board about them but we love Honest and will be using them again. I don't mind Pampers as a second option for diapers and used them intermittently. That being said any time I tried to use a Pampers wipes it caused a diaper rash so wipes I'm very specific about using Honest only.
  • Thank you ladies!! I was about to buy Huggies but it looks like I'll be switching to Pampers. I want to switch to cloth eventually but all my new mom friends have said for the first month, keep it simpler.
  • We use cloth, but when we use disposables we also use Honest.

I liked different diapers at different times- unfortunately not able to plan well that way!  I usually bought what was on sale- I loved the honest company diapers but will only buy them when I can get a 40% off bundle.  I kept a couple of boxes of different brands so I could use whatever I wanted.  It seemed to go in stages based off of how big she was.  When DD was just transitioning into size 2 diapers, Huggies didn't work and Target was ok.  Honest was the best at that time. Right before we moved her to size 3, Honest didn't cut it and Target was fine.  Once we switched to 3, I hated Target again.  DD is pretty petite (20 months old, 20 lbs, size 18m clothes and size 3 diapers) so she didn't move through the diaper sizes that fast anyway.

That being said, I hated Pampers from the beginning. I was gifted a box of size ones and I couldn't stand the smell of them.  DH used them when he changed her diapers :)

ETA: at home we cloth diapered from the time her umbilical cord fell off.  Disposables were for babysitters or when leaving the house. Cloth diapers are super easy for the first 6 months if they are breast fed, it isn't until later when they start eating real food that they are a bigger pain to clean.

  • As a baby ds had huge blowouts from huggies so I tried luvs ..(I never bought pampers they were always way more than what I wanted to spend on diapers) luvs worked awsome for us as an infant and baby but now that hes a toddler ive been using huggies little movers ...essentially its trial and error some babys do better with different brands just the way it is I guess :)

Ive even tried the parents choice brand from walmart and they worked really well surprisingly for how cheap they are if your on a tight budget.
  • Until DD is big enough for our cloth diapers (and her cord stump is gone), we're going to use the Pampers Swaddlers from the hospital and either BabyGanics, Honest, or Bambo Nature diapers. We used Luvs and Well Beginnings diapers (Walgreens) last time when the Swaddlers were all gone.

I second PPs' opinions of Huggies for baby boys- they leak and were a pain. No idea if they work for baby girls.
  • We used and loved pampers swaddlers. Used them until DS sized out and then switched to pampers baby dry and cruisers. Tried samples of Huggies and hated them because they always leaked for us. I am a fan of Huggies natural care wipes though as the pampers ones were too wet for my liking.

  • I loved pampers for nb and size 1 with DD and then they just didn't seem to fit right. We tried target and Costco brand and they were fine. We then went to Huggies and I love them for when she got older. For this girl, we plan on using pampers until she can fit into cloth.

We're using disposables the first few weeks also then switching to cloth. But we have two different brands in case he has a sensitivity to one or the other (but we live 30 min from the closest store and it's easier to just be prepared ahead of time)...

Did you register for cloth? I did. My mom put on the invitation that we were cloth diapering so we wouldn't receive a ton of diapers we wouldn't use/have to return. Cottonbabies.com is a great site and you can register through them as well. I've gotten 8 bum genius pocket snaps for $10.50 each during their seconds sales. Can't beat that when they normally cost $18 or so.

Just thought I'd throw this out there: my sister was the only one who bought us any cloth diapers, even though we did register for some. It's become more common since our firstborn, but a lot of people are still unfamiliar with it and won't buy them. So don't count on getting many/any at a shower unless you have a lot of cloth diaper loving friends. ;)

For when we do use disposables, we like Target Up & Up for daytime and Pampers Baby Dry for overnight. They've worked great for both of our kids.
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

Right. We had to buy our whole cloth diaper stash for DS because both sets of our parents thought it was a dumb idea, and nearly none of the older folks who went to our showers even looked at our registries. It wasn't so bad though and definitely saved us money.

Yes no one at my family shower bought them! But, the teachers at my school keep asking if they're on my registry so hopefully that means they'll buy some! I have 16 all together right now, I paid for 6 myself. Gift card and a teacher gave me a set of 8 fuzzibunz that were given to her but never used them.

It's funny to see the previous generation react to modern cloth. My dad was hilarious. At first he was like "why in the world would want to do that?!" Then after showing him what they are like now and explaining to him what the benefits were he was all about it. My mom is a little iffy on washing them at her house when we visit but is totally open to seeing them in action before deciding.

  • We usually used luvs or pampers depending on the store we grabbed them from. Didn't have issues with Huggies when we used them. The "organic" diapers caused the worst allergic reactions for us. We also cloth diapered for a lot of the time.
  • Little PSA: if you have Amazon prime, they currently have a coupon for 30% off pampers right now!

  • I'm a FTM but all my mom friends swear by the Costco brand if you are going the disposable route. Based on their recommendations that's where we are starting out.

  • I used Pampers with my other 3 and will with this 1 to. The Swaddlers I liked best till they grew out then went to Cruisers.
  • We love Pampers Swaddlers. Tries several others and these work best for us. Swaddlers now go up to size 6. Just an FYI.

Unless things have changed in the past 2 years, Costco doesn't have nb size diapers. They start at size 1-2 fyi.

  • I just wanted to add 2 comments:

    1) I haven't used the honest companies diapers but was given a line of their products at a shower. The baby bum wash spray is horrendous and makes me question the line. My LO would scream bloody murder when I used it, didn't think anything about it then one day after my happy baby getting wiped turned to screaming in pain baby when sprayed, I decided to try it myself. Holy mother of eff that stuff burned!!! There are reviews online about it, it has witch hazel and I'm used to that but I've never experienced anything like it. Just a general PSA that their diapers might be good but stay away from the spray bum wash!

    2) no one bought us cloth diapers despite registering and all our family was only moderately supportive. They said they didn't want to waste their money on stuff we wouldn't use. I love cloth, we've been CDing full time for almost 2 years and have had *maybe* 1/2 dozen cloth blowouts. Real elastics hold that sh!t in! Especially compared to the 2/3 times a day blowouts I had with huggies while on vacation, just should have brought the cloth.

I agree with the huggies are big mistakes!! (opinion) I used pampers also but for the opposite reason...my daughter was a chunky monkey and they were the only diapers that fit good enough but weren't tight!! Maybe that just means they are the best?! lol all diapers have their ups and downs and you kind of just have to try some and figure out which works best!! We ended up using Sams club brand, members mark, because they come in larger quantities and fit just like pampers!! However they don't start until a 1...so we will start out with pampers again!!

    Edited because words are hard!!

  • LOOOVE pampers (especially swaddlers) for the softness and scent.  Hated Luvs, they always leaked. But we end up buying the store brand for half the price.  Not all store brands are good, we've had great luck with Walmart's Parent's Choice and Dollar General's DG Baby..

    Anniversary

  • We are a pampers house. I actually really liked the Huggies pull-ups but the blue tabs on the sides have very sharp edges and they would actually leave scratches deep enough to bleed on my son's thighs. It happened time and time again. I've sworn off of all Huggies for good now.

I wish I had the time and determination to go cloth.
  • We used Pampers with DD for the first 4 months.  Day time we use the swaddler and once DD was around 4-5 months, we switched to Target for daytime. It's definitely cheaper but I can tell her it is not as dry as Pampers, but it seems to work ok for the last year and a half.  Night time we use Pampers Baby Dry that claims to last 12 hours.  It seriously works amazing and I can't believe how big it gets in the morning with no leaks!

With blowouts, I feel like it's going to happen no matter what, especially during the early months when it's very liquid.  If they are lying down or angled a certain way, it will go all the way up their back.  I tried to size up to control the situation and it worked at times.

We tried Huggies but like PP mentioned the gel/silicone balls thing really grossed me out. I had to peel it off of DD's private part once and it was just not a pleasant experience. I also read it on the news that babies can get burns from it.
  • I think you should register for all different brands :) Because you won't know what is going to work for you until you try! We ended up using Pampers Swaddlers in the beginning and loved them, we also used Target brand as well. You'll find that some diapers run a bit smaller and some run a bit bigger. Target brand lasted longer for us. After size 1, we used Target or Huggies Little Movers (I noticed that the Huggies Snug & Dry and Pampers Baby Dry ran a bit smaller). I also loved the Seventh Generation diapers because of the fit, but didn't love the price.

I stocked up on a TON of diapers and still have some leftover for this baby. My daughter was in 1's for a long time, 3's for a long time and she's been in 4's for what feels like forever now. Size 2 diapers are the dumbest sized diapers ever (don't buy too many of these!). I had 5 boxes leftover and just exchanged 2 of the Target brand for bigger sizes over the weekend. I'm sure I'll have even more leftover after this baby.
