Maternity Pictures

Are any of you doing "Maternity Pictures", my in-laws keep asking me if I'm doing them and I keep telling them I'm not!! Then I get a million questions on "why not?!" I will probably do a few cute pics with DH and our dogs but I don't see the point in having a ton of pictures that I look HUGE in. What will I do with those afterwords?? I MUCH rather have adorable newborn pictures. They just don't understand and apparently are listening to me... thoughts?

Re: Maternity Pictures

  • I am thinking of doing like a "mini session" I've seen some come out beautifully and while I may not appreciate my size in the moment, I think I'd like them to look back on. I'm not trying to spend $500 on a full session so I'll see if I can get like a 20 minute one or something.

  • I didn't do maternity photos with DS, and don't plan on it with LO either, but I did splurge on the newborn photos and I absolutely LOVE them.  Those are totally worth the money to me.  If you're doing newborn photos, see if the photographer has a package that includes a mini-maternity sessions, or would be open to doing a mini-session.  Sometimes they'll throw that in for a little bit extra.
  • I'm on the fence about it. I've been taking pictures of myself pregnant -- alone to document my bump, with my husband, etc. I'm trying to not to shy away from the camera even though I feel a little self conscious. My mom doesn't have any pictures of her pregnant and I would've loved to see them. However, I think I'd rather not have professional maternity photos done. I don't think I'd display them and if they're just going to be scrap booked, I don't see the point in having "nice" ones over the ones I can take on my own.

I have a nice camera and a tri-pod so maybe I'll take a few on my own just to have but I think I'd rather spend the money on a newborn shoot when the baby is here and hopefully find a photographer that is willing to incorporate us into a few of the photos as well. We'll see. Maybe I'll get hormonal and want some. Who knows.
  • I hated the way my body looked pregnant, and I wouldn't celebrate those pics.  I would personally never do them.  I have seen some GORGEOUS photos... It's just not for me.

  • Yes, we are doing a maternity shoot as well as a newborn shoot. We definitely want this time documented in a beautiful way (aka with a pro and photoshop ;) )

We've also taken belly shots each week just for us to keep.
  • NLewis1 GORGEOUS! I will def be doing our newborn pics at home, I would just feel much more comfy at my own house
  • I think what I'm most worried about with maternity pictures is them turning out super cheesy. I don't want a full blown session of my naked tummy, or pictures that look forced. I think I may just do a mini session, that sounds more up my alley for sure
  • Yes, we're doing maternity pictures & newborn pictures with the same photographer. Our maternity pics will be outdoors & lots of fun...I'm hoping we really enjoy it. They aren't until the last weekend in May, so I'm hoping I'm still this excited about them then.

  • I had my sister take some.  I'm glad I didn't spend money as I didn't really like how I looked pregnant but am glad I documented it.  I much preferred spending money on newborn pictures.

  • I am a photographer, and lots of my clients do maternity and newborn shoots, but I'd definitely say the vast majority prefer to only do the newborn session due to being self conscious about their pregnancy bodies, but i just want you all to know, your pregnant bodies are BEAUTIFUL!! :)
  • I am doing both maternity pictures and newborn pictures.  I'm very excited for both :)
  • I found a photographer that bundled maternity, newborn, six month, nine months, and first birthday pictures all into one price! It seems like a reasonable price to me so I will do maternity pictures. If it wasn't a part of the bundle I don't think I would go out of my way to hire someone to do them.

  • I'm not planning to get professional maternity pics, but I have been trying to take more photos of myself, H, and our life in general.  I agree with PPs that someday your kid(s) will appreciate seeing photos of you during this time, but they don't necessarily have to be professional photos.  If a maternity session came as part of a package deal (or if I disliked taking casual pics and preferred a more controlled setting), then I would probably get the professional pics.
  • I'm not really wanting maternity photos, but my sister is a professional photographer (mainly newborns and kids as she's done stuff for children's modeling agencies), and there is probably no way she's going to let me out of it.... Do I want them? No. Am I doing them? Most likely.

  • H and I were at odds about this. Neither of us liked maternity pics before but we lost our first pregnancy and I definitely want to do some now. Not the Miami-style bare belly ones, those aren't for me, but something that I can cherish that's been professionally edited. I found a photographer here who gives special rates for rainbow babies so I really lucked out, it was hard for him to say no to a $20, 30 minute session. Can't see spending a fortune though because I think newborn pics are definitely a better investment.

  • I really loved our maternity pictures and none of them included my exposed belly! The way our photog did them, it was like engagement pictures except they focused on my belly. And like photoshop! Lol. I do have a couple of my maternity pictures hanging in our home, and I will hang one or two of this session as well.

I love washing dishes and looking up and going "awww my little buddy is in my belly in that picture!"

It was seriously my favorite! I loved that I didn't have to get my newborn out and about, and it just felt so much more natural to be rocking him in his rocker in his room. She did take a couple close up shots of his face, but other than that it was just him and I. I just wish I could have gotten my husband involved but he was working a TON at the time. He WILL be involved in this ones newborn shoot though

  • ** also wanted to add I am not for the bare belly ones, I plan to be fully dressed on the beach with my husband, just some nice bump pics!

  • I never have before, but we are taking Easter/spring family pictures in March. I'll ask the photographer to do do a few maternity pictures, but we mostly focus on the kids. She's also doing our newborn pictures. We did them ourselves with our first two and the were difficult the second time around. I want everyone in at least one picture and we have a better chance of that with a professional.

  • We are planning on taking family pictures in March or April, so while they won't be "maternity" pictures, you will be able to tell I'm pregnant in them. I have 2 pictures of me from lady time I was pregnant--I gained a ton of weight and hated how I looked and just refused to let people take pictures, but I wish I had more, so I'm glad I'll have these for us, and our children to look back on.
We were actually going to do them before Christmas but I decided I wanted to actually look pregnant instead of just fat...

  • I had them done with my first and I'm pretty sure I have not looked at them since I gave birth 5 years ago. I may have a few (not professional) taken with my son and my bump this go 'round, but that's it.
  • MDKC14 your husband is so cute in the pic of him holding his "belly" haha. Love your photos!

  • I've never had a maternity session done, but I'm kind of jonesing to do one this time. I'm bad about remembering to take photos of myself, even the snapshots to record the size of the bump, so I don't have any particularly great photos of myself pregnant, and what I do have tend to be blimpy-looking candids snapped by friends that obviously don't look great. I have a number of friends who take professional-quality photos, though, so I will probably beg them to do some sessions with me, rather than paying for a professional session.

  • I had them done with dd and will with this one as well. My photographer does what she calls a grow with me plan that gets maternity, newborn, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month and 1st birthday all bundled in for a discounted price so it's a great deal. Here are two of my favorites from dd that are actually displayed in my house.

  • I didn't for either of my first two pregnancies. I booked the same newborn photographer for this baby that we used for DD2's newborn photos and first birthday pictures, and she's throwing in a maternity mini-session for us. I'm pretty excited, although I doubt I'd have done them otherwise. There will be no bare belly, though!

  • Not for me. This is our third and we have never done maternity pics. I have no problem with how I look pregnant, but photographers are expensive where I live and I honestly just don't want to spend the money.

  • In the beginning I was totally set to take a ton of preggo pictures... But it just hasn't worked out for me. I do not see anything wrong with not taking pictures, and I know my MIL does not agree. Tough. Its my pregnancy, not anyone elses.
  • I love everything about my pregnant body and want to (And have been) documenting everything so far. It took us a while to get pregnant with IF, and I would yearn for a baby belly. We plan on doing a maternity and newborn session. I want some really nice maternity pictures and have actually done more pinteresting for maternity shoots than I did with our wedding photography! My husband and I both adore my baby bump, it's probably borderline insane, but we waited so long for this and struggled getting to this point.

I can definitely understand why some women don't want them. I've had friends who really struggled with their pregnant bodies, but all were so amazing and beautiful to me that it was hard for me to understand where they were coming from at first.
  • I'm actually a photographer and some of my favorite sessions are maternity shots!  I'm not only doing maternity photography for myself, we're also doing birth photography (I'll do my own newborn session but I'm hiring another local artist to do the other sessions).  The trick is to get out of the studio and into a place that makes you feel comfortable.  We're going to do part of the session here in our house so we can include our dogs and another at a local park we both really like.

  • Well I think y'all have changed my mind. I want my sweet baby to be able to look back at pictures of me pregnant, so I will take some just for him!
  • I don't know. people keep telling me i need to take lots of photos.  If you had asked me before i got pregnant I would have said I wanted to take a picture a day and make a gif.  but then it took 5 years for me to get pregnant.
and it's a pain to set up the camera.  so i am at 20 weeks and have exactly ONE pregnancy photo (that was my iphone set up on some books with the timer).  and i don't really feel that excited about taking more.
I get super uncomfortable with photo shoots.  we didn't even hire a photographer at our wedding (just had some friends take some shots).
I think that's what we'll do here too.  I have a few friends that are excellent photographers.  if they can take a couple just so we have something to commemorate this time, i think that will be enough.

My friend does a little photography or I probably wouldn't ever get professional pictures done. I never ask for a lot of photos. Maybe 7-10 depending on what we're doing. It helps knowing people like that.

  • I am excited. I didn't take maternity photos with my daughter back in 2011 (she was born in April 2012). I was huge as a house and just wasn't comfortable. I am excited with this pregnancy because I'm doing my photos this round with my little boy next month!
  • I was going to say no but I love the ones of the little sibling loving on mom's belly. I did with DD and didnt love them and didn't do anything with them so I probably won't do any this time.
