Early ultrasound scan 5-6 weeks, no heartbeat. Is this normal????

I am trying to keep some faith.

I have had a previous ectopic pregnancy and missed miscarriage both ended during the early weeks of pregnancy.

I attended EPAU today for an early scan - sac looked brilliant, yolk looked brilliant and fetal pole was measuring between 5-6 weeks.

But there was no heartbeat?

I am going back for another scan in 7 days time.. but I am really stressing out. Has anybody else had this? Is this normal?

Very common and normal to not detect heartbeat this early. Given your history I understand your fear, but such an early scan is going to struggle to pick up the heartbeat. If you do some searches on this forum you'll find many similar cases and hopefully get some reassurance. Side note: at my 28-week appointment my Dr. took AGES to find the heartbeat and I nearly died of panic...but baby had just nestled in deeply!

@NHKx2 Thank you for your reassurance. I really hope this is the case. The lady scanning me was very confident that everything was growing as it should be therefore didn't take my hcg levels this time. I am hoping when I go back next week I will be able to see a flicker x

What PP said. Also, the ticker doesn't start ticking till 6 weeks so you're very early with 5-6 week range. Seeing a fetal pole is a very good sign because I've heard of some that don't see any at all that early. My first scan, baby was measuring 6w5d and we were able to see and hear HB, which was also very early but I'm sure the ticker had just started

try to stay calm, you can't control it. Stay positive.

Normal. My first ultrasound I thought I was further along but was only measuring right at 5 weeks. All we could see was the gestational sac. I went back a week and we got to hear the heartbeat. I would try not to worry about it.

At 6 weeks, the ultrasound didn't show a heartbeat. We went back at 7w3d and there it was ticking away! Try to stay positive!

Very common rarely can a heart beat be seen that early in actually surprised they did an ultrasound before 7 weeks. Hang in there

Thank you ladies and @Lindsayleigh1989 the only reason they gave me an early one was to make sure everything was in the right place due to the previous ectopic. Fingers crossed when I go next Tuesday a heartbeat will be visable! x

I went yesterday and don't have a heartbeat at 6w1d, it's totally normal. Doc said everything is measuring quite on time and I have an appointment again in 2 weeks to look for the heartbeat (due to a history of MC). Good luck at your next scan, I'm sure it will be normal, FX for good luck!

*UPDATE* Went for another scan today heartbeat was present, fetal pole measuring 4mm - They believe I am 6 weeks 4 days. They are so happy with progress I have been discharged from EPAU and my next scan will be 12 weeks. EEEEK! xxx
