Re: Braxton Hicks

  • Thanks @VitaLuna !! I will try checking for that tonight during one of my many pee breaks :) it seems in only be uncomfortable because I'm trying to get out of bed while they happen. Frankly I'm so desperate for sleep that I send to just get up, pee and lay back down so I never really check my stomach to see if it's tightening haha I'll check tonight so I can let my dr know if I have been having BH. they ask every time I go in and I'm like ummmmm I don't really know LOL

Not a doctor but will say this is not labor. This is exactly what I experience every night and, nope, no baby. Real contractions will get closer together and more intense. They wouldn't just occur throughout the night night after night.

Thanks @PaniaO but I didn't think they were actual contractions. I was asking the other ladies if their Braxton hicks felt like mine at all, or only occurred at a certain time as mine have.
  • My BHCS last about a minute. Earlier this week I had to be admitted for extended observation bc baby didn't pass his BPP (but looked fine in observation) and my contractions were about a minute long and 5-6 minutes apart, that lasted for the whole oberservation but the doctor didn't seem phased by it at all.

  • Question; are all non - true contractions (like the ones that get closer and eventually lead to a baby) categorized as Braxton Hicks? As in, can you have "contractions" that do not lead to true labor?
At the end of the day it doesn't really matter, I guess, as long as you don't have contractions that do not stop and get closer, but I am just curious about the terminology.

  • @Monkeybutt80 this is the way my OB explained it. I've been having both kinds- period type cramps that can be timed, and tightening in the womb that's not always timed.

In my understanding these are both BH. The main difference between BH and real labor is that you can stop BH by changing what your doing. "Real" contractions will continue to get stronger and closer together no matter what you do.

Op- mine also are occurring when I lay down for a period of time in the night. Usually a short walk or hot-ish shower is enough to stop them
  • @Monkeybutt80 it's my understanding that all non-labor contractions are referred to as Braxton-Hicks.

  • @knottie1445387307 and @VitaLuna  thank you for clarifying! I was just curious what the correct terminology is for these tightening (and pretty painful!) sensations I have been having that are regular but NEVER progress (and obviously have not lead to true labor). Whenever I try to tell my OB about them, I stumble on my words because I do not know if I should call them contractions or BH!

You can call them either (I do). Your OB will know you don't mean labor contractions if you're sitting in their office ;)

Right. And the answer is 'yes.' And, again: It doesn't matter if you're having BHCs or not. Still not an indicator of labor at all.

Right. But I still never asked, nor did I say it was an indicator of labor...

I just went back and realized your doctor is asking you this for some reason. I was just noting that it doesn't matter if you're having them or not. But your doctor thinks it's interesting, so ignore me.

  • @PaniaO my doctor asks at every visit as well. It's then noted in my chart.

  • hi ladies- didnt want to start a new thread but have a similar question...

the past day day or two I've been having a lot of tightening/discomfort that doesn't let up with a change in position or lots of water, also has some accompanying back pain but no pattern to speak of. I'm fairly confident its nothing more than BH but when does it become something I should pay more attention to? Is it really as simple as 'you'll just know'? I had discomfort i KNEW was BH previously but this is just different enough to make me question myself. I've been stopped in my tracks and needed to stop speaking once or twice. I have an appointment next week and will address there as well. FTM so think I'm being a little bit of a nervous nelly and getting worked up over nothing!

I'm a FTM so I don't know if there is a direct answer to this, but I would think when they become timable in a pattern is when you will know. I have been experiencing the BH and back pain too but there is no pattern to it, so I haven't been to worried yet.
  • Like PP mentioned when there is a pattern and they become timeable. Could you put a call in to your Dr office just for some reassurance or advice? Mine always says don't hesitate to call us, we'd rather you not stress about a concern.
  • Thanks @SU1989 and @lilqt3929. I have been debating calling the office. the triage nurses are great but when i was having dizzy spells a few months ago they had me come in and it was the most belittling experience (more the way i was spoken to vs. what i was told) and left me in tears. even my non hormonal H was annoyed at the treatment so I'm a little timid about calling again. it wasnt one of the regular obs or rns i see.  I should stop being irrational call and just ask to see anyone but this person. :)
  • @PaniaO my doctor asks at every visit as well. It's then noted in my chart.
mine does too. The nurse always asks about any swelling, headaches, nausea, vomiting, contractions and unusual discharge and she notes them in my chart and take my bp before I see the doctor.

  • @srecupido How many weeks are you? Like others have said, they're just good ol BHs until they become timetable and consistent, and progressive closer together. I've been having pretty intense BHs that have been timetable for a few hours and my MW is not concerned.

  • Hi..Im in 39weeks of pregnancy..my BH always last 3-5minutes atleast..
  • @VitaLuna 36 weeks. Nothing predictable but they've been just different enough to make me curious :)
  • Ranting,

36+6 today. Was up at 2 am having what I thought were mild contractions. They were about 5 minutes apart for a steady hour and a half, had one 16 minutes from the last, then back to about 5 minutes apart for the next 40 minutes, then went all wonky when I started dozing off. Was waiting for them to intensify before waking my husband up to go to the hospital and they sort of just fizzled out. Still having the odd one but very faint, and not as close together. Seeing my OB today. Labour is such a guessing game!

    End rant.
  • liamsmommy09 Oh gosh - that must've been so annoying!
  • Last night they came back but never regular. That's the frustrating part is most times for me they are just all over the place and irregular in strength and timing
  • It's super annoying. My OB didn't seem concerned though. He said if it happens again to take a shower or go for a walk. He also doesn't do cervical checks until 38 weeks so I'm completely in the dark lol.
