Anyone seeing a chiropractor?

I went to my chiropractor yesterday for lower back pain (right side) that I've been having off and on for the past two months. She said the area I was describing is where the back of the pubic bone attaches to the spine. She did some adjustments on my back (uses a drop table with the middle part pulled up so my stomach never gets close to touching the table) and I feel so much better today. After doing some reading on the Webster Technique for pregnant women and some of the benefits, my plan is to stick with chiropractic care during my pregnancy.

Just wondering if anyone is doing the same, or has in the past. If you have used a chiropractor in your previous pregnancies, did you see any benefits during labor and delivery? I'm hoping for another pain med-free delivery so I might as well try things that might move things along a bit easier.

Re: Anyone seeing a chiropractor?

  • I might start in a couple weeks as it's covered by my insurance. One of my mom friends did and it was a life saver. She still used meds in labor though as she had to be induced and the pitocin made the pain 1000% worse, but we stand at our jobs and it really helped that.

Currently I'm getting massages but it's not the same relief.

  • @dolewhipper That's awesome that your insurance will cover it. My insurance has authorized 8 visits (and that's paying a $50 copay each time) but DH thinks it's worth it to pay out of pocket after that. I'm definitely spreading out my appointments to reduce the out of pocket cost...

I was induced with DD and was hooked up to pitocin the whole time. Since it was my first, I had nothing to compare it to as far as pain level; I mean it hurt but I survived with no pain meds, and I would like to do the same for baby #2 if possible!

From what I've heard about pitocin, you're one brave mama! We get 12 visits so I'm saving mine as well.
  • I go to a Chiro but have never delivered before so no idea about that aspect. It really helps my back pain.
  • I am lurking here but I saw a chiropractor throughout my pregnancy and weekly at the end and I had a pretty easy delivery!  My chiropractor said for all the woman she has seen who started before 30 weeks she never had a breech baby or labor that lasted longer than 24 hours.  I had doctors threatening an induction due to being over due but I went into labor naturally and definitely feel my chiropractor had a lot to do with it.
  • I struggle with back pain and have been managing it with ibuprofen. Well, once I got pregnant I had to switch to Tylenol, which does nothing for me. I was in so much pain I actually had to miss work a few days in the early pregnancy. My OBGYN recommended a chiropractor and he helped SO much. I went once at 8 weeks and again at 13 weeks. I am going to go once a month for management and preventative reasons. I think it is going to help a lot. My insurance doesn't cover it. It was $150 for the first visit and $50 for each visit after that. So worth it to me.

  • I saw a chiro my entire first pregnancy. I pushed for 2.5 hours before DS was born. I had an epi so I didn't have pain. I was induced both times. Seeing a chiro is always a good idea.

  • @BryDienta Thanks for sharing, that gets my hopes up! I was induced because DD was 10 days late, so I'm really hoping to avoid induction this time around!
  • @owens0410 Glad to hear that you are getting some positive results! Hope you feel better!
  • I work at The Joint and get adjusted twice a week. It has helped extremely with RLP and MS. I went a week without getting an adjustment because I was on bedrest and boy, did I notice a difference!

  • I am! My chiropractor offers massage therapy too! So I get to go there for both (not both every visit but at least once  a month for a massage   The adjustments and massages have relaxed my back so much. I had a few days where i could barely stand up straight because of the pain in my lower back.

I saw a chiro my entire first pregnancy and loved it - always left feeling great and my back would definitely let me know when I was due for an adjustment. Although, despite best efforts (including chiro and acupuncture, and an external cephalic version at the end), my DD was breach... Stubborn girl!!
Still seeing one this time around!
  • I would love to, but with our deductibles now I have to pay $250 out of pocket first before my insurance will contribute anything. :(

If you have a Joint around you I would go to them. They work with cash only prices and for $49.00 you get four adjustments every month. It is super affordable!

  • I have been going regularly since I was 6 weeks pregnant. I wanted to start doing a regular program, and just happened to find out j was pregnant then. It has helped quite a bit so far, and hopefully will into labour and delivery/post partum. I think it's a great thing.

Just curious @HRiely after how many visits did you notice a difference with your MS? I'm almost 15 weeks and still puke almost every day (although I can't complain too much, it's better than when I was pregnant with my first). If my MS symptoms got better that would be an awesome benefit!
  • @MDmomma1217You have to specifically ask them to adjust your T5, T6, T7 and T8. Sometimes its just one of those area's and sometimes its all of them. It took about three adjustments...every other day I went...to feel a  difference.

  • I haven't been since I've been pregnant...my chiro moved offices and now he's really far away :( I don't want to try somewhere new, especially pregnant. I'll take a day off or something at some point and go.

  • Any more people experienced with The Joint? I have a friend who works there and has been trying to get me to come in. My husband is skeptical of chiropractics in general and then it being a chain that claims to have the cheapest prices...he's paranoid they're going to cripple me. I do get lower back pain (probably from carrying DD, it wasn't this bad at 41 weeks pregnant I swear) that interferes with sleep pretty often so I might just ignore him.
