I hope no one is opposed to me posting this. I know there is a baby gear thread but this is more specific. I'm (obviously) due in March and still not totally sure where baby will sleep when we first bring him/her home. I've heard varying things about rock n' plays, bassinets, cribs, pack n' plays etc but I can't seem to decide. Help! What did you/will you use? Please comment!

  • I put rock n play, but we will go back and forth between that in our room and a co sleeper next to our bed until we figure out what works best

  • Since we rent and only have a 2 bedroom, baby will be in our room in the pack'n'play. When he gets bigger he will move to his crib in the same room with his sister. We are going to save up to rent a 3 bedroom so hopefully that situation won't be for long.

  • We got handed down a super cute bassinet. So we decided to use that by our bed until she outgrows it and then into her nursery she goes!

  • Bassinet next to my bed. So much easier for breastfeeding in the middle of the night. But once she sleeps through the night, she'll go to a crib in her room. My oldest did that at 8wks, my 2nd not until 8mths!

  • The arms reach co-sleeper is the best thing ever. I had the mini one with my last son, but plan to buy the full sized one for this baby so that I can get more use out of it.
I'm thinking the full sized ones are the same size as a pack n play, so she'll sleep in that probably until she moves into a toddler bed. She'll be in the same room as me because I only have a 3 bedroom, and my 2 boys have their own (much needed) rooms, they are 13 & 9.

  • I tried the arm's reach co-sleeper and the rock n play with DD, but she wouldn't sleep in either, so in our bed she went. I will try them again with this one, but I voted mom's bed, since she will end up there anyway probably.

Seems like every night we start out in the arm's reach cosleeper, but end up in bed with me after a bit. I don't mind though. Sometimes I move baby back to the cosleeper and sometimes I just let him/her sleep with that sweet little head nuzzled into my armpit. We just play it by ear every night.
I voted our bed though, bc that's where the majority of sleeping gets done.

  • We play it by ear. Ds would not sleep in the bassinet. He liked the crib ok and of course preferred to sleep in our bed. We will not be letting the twin in our bed (just not enough room) so we have 2 cribs, 2 bassinets, and 2 rockers to see what they prefer.
Ps: everything is hand-me-downs so we didn't have to buy everything just in case they don't like them.

  • Little apartment = crib in my room. My 100+ lb dog likes to sleep in the bed with me, so baby definitely won't be

  • We're hoping to either score an Arm's Reach Co-sleeper from a friend or else buy one. If this doesn't work out, we may go rock n play or bporrow MIL's bassinet. We had gotten a bassinet attachment pack n play for DS that we had planned to use, but he hated it. I don't think he slept more than 5 min at a time in it.

  • I put "in his bed from first night" because that's what we did for my first son (and I assume the question was mostly about night time sleeping). That said, I had the good fortune of coming into a cradle and plan to keep him in that, next to my bed, in the daytime so I can nurse and nap. :)

  • We plan on using the bassinet in our room for the first 2-3 months. It worked well with DD for night time feeding but by 3 months, she was starting to outgrow it. She also slept better once she was in her crib in her own room.

DS1 slept in our room in the bassinet portion of a pack n play and sometimes our bed when I would fall asleep nursing until we transferred him at 6 months old. I plan to attempt the same pattern this time.

  • I would *like* for her to sleep in her own crib in her own room but we'll have to play it by ear.  DS1 & DS2 did, but Ben had bad reflux and had to either sleep in the rock n play or swing for months and months.  We did eventually put the rock n play in his own room.

  • DD1 slept in the pack n' play/newborn napper next to my bed for a couple months until she got into a good sleeping pattern. Then she moved across the hall to her crib. When DD2 was born, I started out the same way. But one day I put her in the Rock N' Play and she slept for 4 solid hours. We never looked back. Haha. She was colicky and the RNP worked wonders for her. She was also tiny, so she fit in it for a long time.

With this one, I'm going to attempt the RNP from the beginning because we've moved and have a tiny bedroom. The RNP takes up way less space than the Pack N' Play.

  • We have a bassinet, but I know I will want baby right next to me to sleep at night and for various naps throughout the day. I voted co-sleep, but baby will likely be in the bed with us.
    blueeyedrose86
  • I intend to have her in her own room and crib from day one, but last time my hormones took over and DD1 ended up in a rnp in our room for 3 weeks before sleeping in her own room. So one of those two?

If she starts in our room that won't last very long as we've found that for our family everyone sleeps better in their own room DD1 definitely slept better once she was out of our room.

  • I put cosleeper, but really LO will sleep in the pack and play (not the napper) using the bassinet feature.  It's kind of the same, right?  We have a mini-pack n play... the travel lite one.
    ecwknicole103109
  • My grandmother is giving me a bassinet, so LO will probably be sleeping in there for the first 2-3 months in our room.

  • He will be in the pack n play but it will be right next to my side of the bed and the sides are the same height as my mattress so it made sense to have him used to the pack n play and it's almost like a cosleeper. Plus then my dogs will be used to it as it moves all over the place too.

  • Probably bassinet in our room, but I won't lie and say that baby will not spend an hour or two in our bed. The first few days we just do what we need to do until the milk comes in. :) Within a week or two, baby will be in the crib in the nursery only.

Unless of course things don't go according to "plan." All of my theories are based off of what we did with our first two children. Before my firstborn, I swore I'd cosleep and I only got a crib because my MIL wanted to buy one, but both of my children ended up in the crib before they were a month old and never looked back. You'll quickly figure out what works best for your family!

  • We were gifted a cosleeper, a rocker, and we bought a crib. I'm honestly not sure where she will sleep. I've been freaking out about SIDS nonstop for days so I'm happy to see this post. I've read good and bad things about all three. I am interviewing pediatricians soon so I plan to ask them.
  • Bassinet in our room for first 4 weeks then move into crib in their own room at 4 weeks (the crib is practically visible from our room and about 12 feet farther than the bassinet but would likely move anyway).
  • I loved having a bassinet in our room. Made nighttime feelings relatively easy. (Baby's room was on a different floor.) Haven't decided where this baby will live long term so I'm putting off the decision until next fall.
    ecwk
  • Playpen in our room until we have no more in laws or parents by month 2 or 3.  We live in a 3 bedroom and DD is in one room.  We need to eventually convert the guestroom / office into a bedroom but with all the people that will be staying with us in the beginning, we will hold off for a bit.
    ecwk
  • Playpen in our room until he moves to the crib in the nursery.  While the nursery is right next door, my husband wanted him to co-sleep for the first couple of months.  As a ftm, I wasn't really sure, but now I'm with the idea as well.
    ecwk
  • She will be in our room for a few weeks in her bassinet then will move to her own room.
    ecwk
  • I had just assumed pack and play in our room until we buy a house with a nursery- but dh wants a bassinet because of space issues... Who knows what he will end up sleeping in, but definitely not the bed-- my original babies, my pit and chi get precedence over the beach in this case!
    CecilB93ecwk
  • I've heard that the parents sleep better when the noisy little thing isn't in the room with us.
Also, the nursery is close enough for me to hear him cry without a baby monitor and I'm the type to let him self soothe for a while before running to his aid.
So he'll be in his own bed from day 1.

However, that in no way means he'll never be in our bed. Hell, we've got two dogs in the bed already. Why not a baby too?!
DH and I have agreed that at middle of the night feeding times, he'll get up and go get him, I'll nurse him, then he'll either stay for a while and go back later.....or DH will take him back if we're not sleeping well.

  • Our plan is crib from day one. Her room is less than 10 steps from my side of the bed so we are hoping it works out well. However, no co sleeping for us. My DH has managed to make me bleed from kicking and has karate chopped my neck in his sleep multiple times. I don't this LO would be safe in our bed!

  • Probably the bassinet portion of the pack n play at first, then transitioning to a crib in his own room.

I did some research on this last week and was surprised that the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends babies sleeping in the same room (not the same bed) as their parents for the FIRST YEAR! Does this seem a little excessive to anyone else? Obv I want to do what's best for the baby but I also don't want him to become too dependent on us to sooth/go to sleep. Thoughts? I plan to bring this up to my OB at my next appt.

We have used a pack and play that has the removable bassinet on top for our other two. This stays in our room for about 6 weeks. I have had c-sections with all my kids, so this just made it easier on me to have the baby in the same place. Plus, most of these come with diaper and wipes storage which is convenient for late night feedings

I'm surprised by this as well. On the other hand, I have friends who have had their little ones sleeping in their room (in separate crib/bed) into their toddler years and it has worked beautifully for them. Take the "what's best for baby" with a grain of salt though. Pediatricians have recommended a lot of different things over the years and what is recommended now will probably not be in 5, 10, 20 years. I'm not bashing pediatricians either... love ours and have tons of respect for him and the work he does! It is absolutely worth getting your pediatrician's opinion and expertise and I'd never suggest putting your baby in a dangerous situation. But every baby/family is different and sleeping arrangements (as evidenced by the poll) are not one size fits all.
