BTDT Moms: What are you doing differently this time?

Just curious how 2nd, 3rd, 4th+ time moms are handling this pregnancy compared to their previous pregnancy/pregnancies.

I, for one, will be eating all the damn deli meat I want. I'll still be cutting out or down on things like caffeine and alcohol (things that actually have a correlation to health problems) but I'm not going to worry as much about food that's only harmful if it's contaminated with something else.

  • I'm still eating sushi every week/two weeks, just avoiding known mercury bombs like Mackerel and Tuna. I'm gonna go ahead and say it's good for morale.

  • I did really well with my last pregnancy and balanced the no-food list ok (don't eat meat anyways, allowed myself some soft cheeses - always if from a grocery store and pasteurized, had some spoonfuls of cookie dough before baking, etc).  In terms of baby being here, I am hoping to be a bit more relaxed overall.  I focused on, obsessed over and developed PPA with many things, spending days on end on Google looking at normal baby poop, rashes, milk allergies etc. ... and my kiddo has been relatively healthy.  So I'm hoping to just take things a bit easier, there isn't always a reason baby is crying and there isn't a perfect fix to every problem... so yeah, who knows if I will succeed but that's my hope!

  • I'm gonna milk this pregnancy for all its worth. I want a nap? I'm taking a nap. I don't want to to go out into the cold to run an errand for SO? He can go get whatever it is he wants. DS is still little enough to take naps, so I do too. Last time everyone said, enjoy because with the next one you won't be able to. I'm determined to relax myself just as much, if not more, this time around. There are few times where I'm not running around being everything to everyone, that's what moms do. My pregnancies are my me time.
This too!  This weekend I was laying down and the kids busted in the room.  I heard DH say leave mom alone, she is napping.

  • I'm glad you commented on the food stuff. Last time I had unpasteurized juice once and freaked out. This time I'll eat a steak medium and not well done (prob won't do it medium rare cause I'll fill guilty). Eating a little more junk food at the beginning. I'm trying to make DH take on some more responsibilities like taking care of DD a little more and clean up a bit better but I seem to be failing at this. I upped my intake of lemonade early so I avoid throwing up.

    I've been craving tuna bad
  • I was the third of my siblings to get pregnant and I watched my sisters over analyze everything they ate and it was unbelievably annoying.  As for deli meats and soft cheeses, you have to look pretty hard, like go to a fancy cheese shop look, to find unpasteurized cheese in the US.  And the odds of getting listeria or salmonella from deli meat are pretty slim. My DH and I also are in the hospitality world (he's a chef I work with wine, met in culinary school) so we both know a lot about food sourcing and food borne illnesses.  I got side eyed by them my whole first pregnancy and had a perfectly healthy son. I will do the same as before, cut back on caffeine and completely give up alcohol, but thats about it!

  • The only thing I'm doing differently right now is that I'm not eating peanuts because DD2 is allergic to peanuts and she is still breastfeeding so I don't really have a choice.

After the baby is born I'll do whatever the heck I want to. I had one c-section and one vaginal birth. I sleep trained one and not the other. I fed one formula and one breastmilk. I did baby food (puréed food) with one and baby led weaning with the other. I'll just go with the flow!

  • @crispy11 - yes good one to point out, I was team green last time and will (hopefully) be finding out this time.
  • I was only crazy follow the rules with my first....and she was the one that came at 32 weeks. lol. With #2 & #3  it was all things in moderation with the exception of adult beverages , they are a no go. But NO one wants to see me not have my morning cup of joe!
I already rest when its quiet time and take full advantage of snuggles... there will always be work to be done but my babies re only going to be little this once.
Seeing how this is my 4th and last pregnancy I just want to enjoy it to its fullest. I can't wait to tell my daughter and make this fun for the older kids so we can all enjoy it together!
I do wish we could go team green but DH is way too much of a planner  to go for that!
  • I'm definitely going to be a lot more chill...I'm having my green tea once in a while when last pregnancy I wouldn't touch caffeine with a 10 foot pole....I'm also going to milk it like PP's mentioned :)

  • I'm trying so hard to follow all the rules as strictly as I did last time to be "fair" to both kids (I know that sounds silly) but it's not going very well. I don't have the time or energy to research everything so I keep eating things I shouldn't on accident (pepperoni, hot dogs etc. Living on the edge). Last pregnancy I would carefully calculate vitamins, folic acid, calcium etc of all my food groups. Tonight I had a grilled cheese and my toddlers left over kraft Mac and cheese (which I by the way swore he'd never eat). So yeah..
  • I was pretty laid back with my last pregnancy. I think this one I would like to be more prepared for their arrival. I was adamant I was going to be at least a week late and he came 2 weeks early. Que freak out at 1am trying to pack a hospital bag and taking the car seat out of the box.
  • I am milking this pregnancy more as well.. I too will be enjoying my deli meat!! I'm not trying to get too carried away with my junk food but I may have eaten some milk duds today at work! I'm also planning more this time and even considering BFing.

  • I've also decided to not worry so much about stuff like deli meat, sushi, or brie! But the main thing I want to do differently is try to do more yoga and keep as active as possible. Later on I'll switch to prenatal yoga, but my goal is to at least do some type of class every week. I kind of slacked last pregnancy, but not this time!

  • Eat all the sushi and lunch meat. I am dealing with a lil more nausea than last. But to be honest..I have kind of forgot the 1st trimester symptoms all together. But I am definitely not as stressed looking at the calendar like come on already. It seems almost to fast.
  • I'm trying to exercise more. It helps that my dd loves working out with me and always and for "one more exercise mommy" when I want to quit.

My mood was awful with ds2's pregnancy during first tri. I can feel it headed that way again, and I'm making a contentious effort to keep my grumpiness to myself.
    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
  • I only followed the "do not eat" list in the first tri with DD. I'd planned to do the same this time, but I've already eaten deli meat and blue cheese, so that's out the window.

What I see being different this time is preparing things for a new baby. With DD, I was adamant we get everything done immediately. With this one I feel more relaxed in that regard since we already have a lot of baby items, and I now realize some things can wait until after baby is born.

  • I have been much more laid-back this time. Not so much with my diet, etc (although I'm definitely more forgiving in that as well) but just in the realm of my general disposition. I was a basket case I with DD! Painstakingly counting down the days, hours, minutes until appointments. Paranoid that anything bad that could possibly happen probably would. It was exhausting! I know it's still early and I'm still very realistic about things now. Just not allowing the negative energy to overwhelm me like I did last time and, low and behold, time is passing faster and I'm actually enjoying myself!

  • I was reasonable with avoiding "bad foods" last time so I'm not changing much in that way.  I actually find it more interesting to think of the things I thought I'd do better this time, but forgot how little control I have over how I feel.  Last pregnancy I only took folic acid because I eat generally pretty well and don't believe in supplementing vitamins.  First trimester nausea and food aversions hit me super hard and my diet goes to shit.  Of course, I promised myself I would do better this time and here we are, 7 and a half week in and most of what I can actually get down is carb-loaded junk.  But this time I'm taking a prenatal to make up for it ;)

Other things I plan to do differently this time are:

    - Look for ways to alleviate symptoms as soon as they start.  Don't "tough it out" until I'm really miserable.  I will be going for more regular massages and I'll probably start using my support band much earlier.
    - Not going to let anyone talk me into early stretch and sweeps. Those first few hurt like hell.  The later ones I barely felt.  I truly believe not that if it hurts that much, your body isn't ready.
    - Have a serious talk about what I can use to help me sleep.  Last time I did bring it up and was told "just take benedryl to knock yourself out if you really need it" but that's not a long-term solution and insomnia was a major problem for me in the last month or so.
  • This will be my last, so I'm going to milk it for all I can! The last time I'll be the center of attention!

  • I am going to try to be more active which hasn't been good these first few weeks, but tonight I am planning on working out.  My first two I barely worked out.  Walking here and there, but that was the extent of it.  I am also just hoping I can keep my diet on track. I seriously caved to all sweets with the first two.

  • The big thing I will do differently is with regard to after baby is here - I will not obsess over my baby's weight, unless there are other issues. My daughter was slow to gain weight and did not regain her birth weight until she was a month old and I was a complete basket case thinking my milk wasn't good enough. But apart from being a petite newborn, she was fine - alert, happy, wetting diapers, eating fine. Remember that first time moms, weight gain is not the only benchmark for newborns. Someone has to be on the bottom of the percentiles.

  • You know, it's funny you posted this.  I was not super worried about these things with my first pregnancy.  I mostly cut out caffeine but still had soda if I felt like I needed a little boost.  I mostly stayed away from deli meat, but if it was freshly sliced for a sandwich, I had it.  I felt like I just limited my exposure vs. cutting it out.  This time around is different though.  My son got infected with e-coli, no idea how or where, and it turned to HUS.  He almost died because of bacteria.  So, after living through that and spending most of a month in the hospital with him, it's not worth the risk to me.  I'll steer clear of things that even have the potential to be harmful.

  • @PSUBecky23 I am right there with you on that one. I hated that our pediatrician was so fast to say I might not be able to breastfeed. I think my LO was back up to her birthweight in 2 wks and they acted like it was horrible. I've since changed pediatricians (not solely because of this).

  • I don't worry very much about anything.

That's very different from my first pregnancy when I worried all the time about everything.

  • Hot Damn, yes to the deli meat! Not that I'm eating anything more than crackers anyway lol. This will be fourth baby and I'm so laid back about it that I seriously think I'm going to stall on going to the doctor until 2nd tri. I mean, I work OB and they won't do anything if something happens to LO until I'm further along and the only thing of importance is labs. Does that make me a bad mom?

Oh, and I'm not breastfeeding. I was unsuccessful with my others and am done trying. Hail to the bottles and pacis! On a related note, does anyone want to purchase a hardly used but very nice Medela pump? Lol
  • Brie cheese update: purchased some tonight, it was glorious.
  • I'm going to try really hard this time to NOT stress about weight gain. I gained 35 lbs last time and cried like a baby when I hit 170.
