Hey everybody,
My FH and I have been ttc for 2 years with no luck minus one false positive test which was absolutely heartbreaking.
A year ago I had no cysts, pcos, diabetes, etc. just didn't ovulate or get my period without being on progesterone. My gyno however retired this year so I get to start this whole process over with a new doctor.
It's one of his colleagues so I am hoping I can skip going through all the blood work, ultra sounds, etc and get put on some type of fertility medication.
My question though is I'm 24 and overweight. I've been doing research on fertility meds and I have been looking into side effects and I see nothing to worrisome, but am I likely to even be prescribed anything to help me get pregnant because of my age/weight?
Re: 2 years ttc. And stuck with a new doctor (intro)
However, I need to urge you not to attempt fertility treatment or take fertility drugs from an OB. You really need to see a fertility specialist (or RE, reproductive endocrinologist). Several OBs give Clomid out like candy and without proper monitoring, which can not only be ineffective but dangerous, especially for women with PCOS. It can be dangerous for many with PCOS because the risk of high order multiples is increased and because a cyst (larger than typical PCOS cysts) may develop, which makes the drug ineffective and can cause the cyst to rupture. Additionally, it may cause your lining to thin out, making conception or a viable pregnancy nearly impossible. I took 2 rounds unmonitored with my OB. Turns out, I don't respond any differently on it (ovulate on my own and still only produce 1 follicle on 100 mg) and it thinned my lining. I did nothing but my reduce my chances of pregnancy while trying to save money by taking it with my OB.
Best of luck to you and please make an appointment with an RE. You won't regret it (only that you didn't do it sooner)!
ETA: Your age should not impact your ability to receive treatment. If under 35, you are considered infertile with no success after 1 year of regular, unprotected sex. Since you have PCOS, the 1 yr wait doesn't even apply to you and you can seek treatment earlier. The 1 yr really just applies to those couples with no known issues that impact fertility. Over 35, it's 6 months.
If they can't find anything wrong I'm going to try to get a referral to an RE
the other thing I thought of is my fiancé is a positive blood type and I'm a negative. Could that be part of the issue for why I wasn't getting pregnant when I was having a period?
However, I have a blood clotting disorder that my OB missed in her initial infertility screening and I strongly believe I lost my pregnancy at 7w because of it. So although my OB did succeed in using Letrozole to get me pregnant, it didn't end well for us due to unknown factors at the time. I also recommend seeing an RE at this point.
I had no trouble getting a referral and I have basically the same stats as you. My RE has not even mentioned my weight at all. We plan to start treatment in March which could be IUIs or something else.
