I don't think we're going to do a babymoon. If we do anything it will just be a weekend away somewhere close. I am finishing up school and won't be done until May and then baby will be coming in June. I also only work part time so I don't get any maternity leave besides pto time I save so I'm saving all of that for after baby comes. My grandparents have time shares and offered one to us for our wedding present and we haven't used it yet so we were thinking we could do that after baby comes but I don't know if I'll have a new job or what so we haven't planned that either
I have a big family it close family. I'm one of 4 daughters . My parents quit giving us Christmas presents about 6 yrs ago ( not surprising I'm the baby at 26) but instead started an annual family trip . They do a home exchange with their home in Breckenridge with places all over . This year we are going to Puerto Vallarta in March . I will be 26-27 weeks . We are with family but have our own room the house sits in the beach etc so I am pretty excited about it !
If your OB says not to worry though, I'd feel much better about traveling. I definitely think I may avoid the news for the rest of this pregnancy.
I will let you know what she says but it is certainly not "known" to cause microcephaly. The samples they have taken thus far have shown that some babies who died with microcephaly did have zika and the samples have also shown that some babies who died with microcephaly did not have zika. They are still trying to determine what is going on. I also saw that article yesterday about the CDC. I plan on bringing all the information I've gathered to my Tuesday appointment and will ask for my doctor's guidance as well as that of her colleagues. She is smart, logical and I will weigh heavily her opinion on the matter but ultimately rely on my own opinion obviously. If I can't start making informed decisions on my own about this baby's health, I will forever be paranoid and running to doctors, right?
Just wanted to update this thread. The CDC, after quite a bit of will-they won't-they, today issued a travel warning to those countries that have localized zika mosquito infestations. The warning is Level 2 (practice enhanced precautions) but the wording of the warning for pregnant women is more in line with CDC Level 3 (avoid unnecessary travel). LINK
Of course this leaves a lot of people up in the air with respect to areas that do not have localized zika infestations but are near the regions that do (such as myself). I'm planning on discussing this with my doctor on Tuesday but wanted to keep others up-to-date who were interested.
Hi ladies! I just read the article above this morning as I'm getting ready to leave mexico (had a great time!). I am wondering whether or not to freak out and go to the doctor or not really worry about it. I got a total of 4 mosquito bites and they were all at night (a parent the zika ones bite in the day). I also miles one and looked at it and they are just tiny and brown..the zika ones are black with white stripes apparently. It was a great trip. .I just don't want to worry foe the next 6 months. Nothing I can do about it now! Is anyone cancelling trips to the caribeean or just being cautious? I used citronella spray (they won't give you chemical ones at the resort) and it seemed to work ok. Mosquitos love me so 4 isn't terrible over a week. I did not see one during the day incase anyone is considering playa del carmen!
Hey mama visiting from the August 2016 boards! No ones talking about this yet over there so I was glad to see your posts. We booked a early baby moon to Mexico, Playa del Carmen on Wednesday and Thursday I hear about this. We are booked to leave Jan 31 (I'll be 10-11 weeks) for a week and did not buy the cancellation insurance cuz I figured it was so last minute and we were sure we'd go. Would hate to loose the money as we purposely saved it for something special. Just about went into a panic reading all of the news. Going to call my doc on Monday.
But from what I heard about Playa, the mosquitos are not out during the day (apparently that's when the zika ones strike) and at night just spray myself in repellant (attractive eh haha) and cover myself if outdoors. We won't book any jungle excursions and just take it easy on the resort (if we ultimately do go). My husband isn't very worried and is still set to go. If I knew about this one day earlier we maybe would have spent the money to go somewhere else. I don't want to spend our last vacation just us all paranoid!

I'm sure you and your baby are fine. I posted the CDC warning above and I think I've read pretty much everything available to the public to read about zika. There is no causal link established between zika and microcephaly but there are correlating links. Of course, correlation does not equal causation and the experts are still trying to understand zika. I find the virus very odd since in prior outbreaks of it, there was no uptick in infant cases of microcephaly as far as the materials I have read. Of course, that could mean a variety of things...the virus could have mutated, the prior outbreaks maybe weren't large enough to see a scientifically significant uptick in microcephaly or maybe something else is causing the uptick in microcephaly. I also haven't yet read about a case of microcephaly where the mother didn't contract zika in Brazil yet (for example, there is a recent case of a mom with a baby born with microcephaly in Hawaii but it is believed the mother contracted zika in Brazil).
I am scheduled to go to St Lucia in about a month. I was comfortable with the risk level so long as the CDC didn't issue a warning. The fact that they have issued a warning makes me more cautious. I was planning on discussing my trip with my doctor on Tuesday at my next appointment anyway and will continue to do so and weigh the practical risks. We may cancel at this point even though zika isn't officially in St Lucia (public health officials there have pretty much said it is just a matter of time before it spreads to St Lucia).
As to your situation, I do not believe the incidents of zika in Mexico were in Playa but I haven't looked into Mexico specifically and if I was in your shoes I would see where the cases were. The mosquitoes that transmit zika do bite during the day as well as the evening as far as I understand it. Also, zika is asymptomatic for most people (most won't know they ever had it as the symptoms are mild). I would just check in with your doctor upon your return. I'm sure you and your baby are absolutely fine but I would just tell your doctor about the trip nonetheless and ask if he/she would like to do any monitoring (an extra ultrasound perhaps) in a few months. Like I said though, I'm sure you are fine.
Thanks guys! I wrote to a Facebook friend who is an infectious disease doctor and he says not to worry about it since most of the cases are in Brazil. That is so strange that it's been around so long but they never noticed the relationship before. Could just be a strange correlation or somethibg specific about Brazil I guess. Scsry though
Also I am trying to make myself feel better since just getting back from playa del carmen and currently scratching a mosquito bite on my leg...the cases in mexico were in chiapas and Nuevo leon which are 13 and 27 hour drives away from playa/cancun. So, while I know it is still a worry. 27 hours is further than a drive from Detroit to Florida. ..so thay makes me feel a bit better.
@junebaby1984 - I promise you, you are fine. Just let your OB know where you were at your next scheduled appointment with him/her but I'm pretty sure the chances that you caught anything are so remote I wouldn't even know how to quantify it.
We are saving as much PTO as possible for when the baby comes so we are taking advantage of this 3 day weekend and are in Monterey/Carmel (we live in the Bay Area so it's just a couple hours south). We're having a great time
DH and I live on the east coast so we definitely wanted a trip to somewhere warm but didn't want to travel out of the county because I have a high risk pregnancy (im pregnant with twins). So we've planned a trip to Scottsdale for presidents day weekend, when I'll be 20w pregnant. Anyone been and have recommendations?
Suzie, you are lucky to have found out about zika before you booked. We already booked our babymoon to Puerto Rico and just found out about the virus now. We are trying to get something back for our flights. Anyone have any good suggestions along the east coast? I'm so upset!
@lilsmuff7 we totally lucked out! We wanted a warm getaway, but settled for Savannah in a few weeks. Maybe you can look into the FL Keys... Hawks Cay is a nice resort. We're from FL so we don't want to stay in our state, but if you're looking for warm in the USA, this is it! You can also look into the beaches along FL's west coast. Siesta Key/Sarasota is very relaxing & pretty.
We just got back from a trip to Paris! It was incredible! My saintly mom watched the kiddos for us and my husband and I took off for a week. We were celebrating (early) our 15th anniversary (which isn't until September) since we knew come fall, we'd have a little one we couldn't leave behind. It was such a blast! So glad we got to have that time together before we welcome baby #6 into our crazy awesome family!!
So disappointed as we are probably going to change our destination as well! Although Aruba isn't technically on the list, they are close enough to Venezuela and tropical enough that my husband and I are concerned. Even if there isn't any documented cases, we would both be worried that one single bite could cause a problem and it won't even be a relaxing vacation at all as a result! We already booked the fight and lodging stay and even though it will cost more to change it, it's really not much in the grand scheme of things to not have to worry that the baby will come out in four months with a problem. We are both really upset but in the long run its probably worth it.
All I wanted was a beach to be lazy on for a few days and to get out of this cold weather. Damn mosquitos!
@hollywoodave531 Before you cancel Aruba I'd really look into it further & talk to your doctor... Aruba is pretty much a desert island with very little vegetation where mosquitos could flourish... and a constant wind from the trade winds. In all of my experience in Aruba I've never noticed mosquitos (my family has a time share there). I certainly understand being concerned about the other islands but it may be worth another look at Aruba!
FWIW I'm planning on traveling to the Bahamas in 6 weeks and unless they state a specific warning against that island I will go.
@MsBeachNJ I totally agree with you and I've been to Aruba three times now and don't recall any mosquitos there at all. My husband is sort of a worry wart and until he saw the CDC warning didn't think much of it. His concern is how close to South America they are and a recent posting on a trip advisor forum talked about how bad the mosquitos were. Plus the worry that anytime we even see a bug we will be nervous. We aren't even going in the rainy season I know!
Suzie, thanks. Probably should have mentioned that I grew up in Florida and DH lived there for a few years as well, so that's out. We are thinking maybe Virginia or south Carolina. Anyone have thoughts?
