Noisy baby when getting to sleep

Okay, so I am not expecting DS to be completely silent when sleeping and getting himself to sleep, but does anyone else have a baby that makes so much noise it almost drowns out the white noise you're using to help get them to sleep?

After his bottle, we swaddle DS and put his pacifier in his mouth and usually snuggle with him for 10-15 minutes before putting him into his bassinet.  Almost every time we put him down regardless of how long we hold him, he makes so much noise that he never ends up fully falling asleep by the time his next feeding rolls around or it takes him around 45 minutes to an hour of  his rambling/gurgling/cooing/hiccuping/snarling, before falling asleep and staying asleep. DH tried putting him to bed without the pacifier, thinking that maybe it was interfering with him getting to sleep, but he just cries and demands it.  He always ends up spitting it out at some point in the process and about 7/10 he's okay with it falling out and doesn't cry to have it put back in.

I recently started to equate all of the noise making to whether or not he was constipated/gassy.  Last night for instance and even after this morning's feeding at 6:30, DS hadn't had a bowl moment since yesterday's diaper change at 3pm.  He went through 5 feedings since and only had a little smudge in his diaper when I changed him at 6:15 this morning.  DH gave him a does of gas drops at his 9 pm feeding and I gave him a dose at his 3 am feeding this morning and still nothing came of it. Has anyone else experienced this and found some ways to get LO to settle into sleep more easily?  I'll add that I am giving him pumped milk and feeding him Enfamil's Supplementing formula.  He gets a bottle of formula after every 2 bottles of my milk.

Re: Noisy baby when getting to sleep

  • This sounds so familiar to my little girl. She is the noisiest sleeper ever! We started using some music and dimming the lights to settle her. She seems to sleep best in her swing when it is not moving. Since she is a preemie her doctor said that the grunting is normal for them and she will grow out of them. We had to change the way we supplement and that seems to be helping. We give her straight breast milk for all but two feedings. We give her neosure formula by itself instead of mixing it for every feeding. We spread out the neosure feedings. She is spitting up less and doesn't gurgle nearly as much. She also seems less gassy and uncomfortable.

  • @amandavan83 My LO was a preemie too.  He was born 6 weeks early.  He ends up getting 3 formula bottles a day, with the way his feedings go.  I also don't mix BM and formula together. Glad to hear her doctor said the grunting is normal.  I was thinking some of the noise he makes is associated with him being so little.  It's almost as if he's trying to clear his throat at times, but can't quite do it.
  • I was looking up stuff about this today because my son is super noisy when falling asleep, too. He makes these throat clearing sounds, like a cough sound, plus the gurgling, etc.. From what I found it could be reflux. I think this is likely in my case since he really only makes these noises when he's put down flat or even on a bit of an incline, he prefers to lay upright on someone, and he spits up at least once after every single feeding. The noisiness makes it difficult for me to fall asleep because I lay there and wonder if he needs something or if he's just figuring it all out...
  • @MamaGooGoo Your situation sounds exactly like what we experience.  He goes down to sleep almost after every bottle, as he falls asleep pretty much at the tail end of every feeding.  It's been suggested to keep him upright for 20-30 minutes after a feeding.  I'm going to start trying that, along with trying to burp him a little bit more during his feedings.  He only gets 3 oz. and I burp him after every 1.  Maybe I'll try and squeeze in 1-2 more times, and see if that helps at all.
