TTC After a Loss

Acupuncture question

I asked this in the WTO thread on TTGP, but I feel like more women in this board get acupuncture than do over there.

What do you do when you're just laying there if you don't fall asleep? I was so relaxed, but didn't sleep and I kept having to try super hard not to let my mind run. Is there a mantra or meditation or something you do?

Re: Acupuncture question

  • I focus on my breath, like in a vinyasa or Yin yoga class. I take even breaths, and try to connect to the breath and let thoughts go. If I catch my mind wandering, I acknowledge the thought and then let it go and get back to the breath. When I was pregnant I would repeat mantras but before and after I just focus on breathing. I am going to look up some positive affirmations for healing for these next few weeks though.

  • I do weekly acupuncture, well have at least since my miscarriage. I was pretty anxious the first few times, like "what am I supposed to do here". I couldn't recall the last time I sat still and didn't have an iPhone or other distraction for an hour and a half! Since then I've focused on my breaths like @AL_TwinCities and positive self-talk/affirmation. I also like to do some guided imagery either for relaxation or imagining what I would like my body to be doing at that point in time, like releasing a healthy egg, implantation etc. It sounds kind of weird typing it out, but it helps me meditate on why I'm there and what I want to happen.

  • I've never done acupuncture but I know anytime I've had to be at the dentist or something for a couple of hours for dental work I take my phone and listen to music or an audio book.

  • Thanks, everyone! I think I'm going to try to focus on breathing and positive affirmations/intentions when I'm there next.

I can't listen to music or an audiobook because I have points in my ears that prevent headphones, but my acupuncturist does play a lovely ocean sound in the background for me, and I just let my thoughts go. I'm crap at meditating, and I've found that just dazing off works for me. I'm actually too afraid to sleep because I roll around so much in my sleep that I'm afraid I'd roll onto some of the needles. :/ If I find myself thinking about something that's stressful, I finish the thought and let it go, and redirect my thoughts. Hope you figure out what works for you soon!

  • @FireInWonderland Yes, I get points in my ears too. My office also prohibits cell phones in their offices, so listening to headphones wouldn't be an option. They do play gong music through the office though, which is relaxing.
  • My acupuncturist has iPod/speakers in the room and gives choice of meditation track for fertility or music. I've never been much into meditation, but her tracks were always super relaxing!
  • I do the same as most of the previous posters here; I focus on my breathing. I try to relax and examine my whole body through my breath.
