Chills and Aches 7 days postpartum

I have a call into the doctor but for peace of mind before they call me back I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I woke up in the middle of the night with a hot flash and then after feeding her I started to get the chills and aches and some cramps (cramps are new - did not have any first week). I also have a pretty decent headache. I took my temperature and it is normal (took on two different thermometers) and I don't seem to have any signs of mastitis.

I googled it and it seems like it is fairly common while your hormones are regulating. Can anyone ease my mind that this is fairly normal and nothing I need to be concerned about?

Re: Chills and Aches 7 days postpartum

  • Could be hormones but still could be mastitis. I had the same thing and then a couple days later red streaks appeared on both boobs, though my actual boobs never really hurt other than typical soreness. Started antibiotics and it cleared up right away. Good luck!

  • Thank you! I will keep an eye on it for other symptoms.
  • I had this a few days after coming home from the hospital. I thought " I must be sick"
It was like I broke a fever, it was so weird! I woke up soaked head to toe, then I was freezing... Like teeth chattering freezing.. I only had minor period cramps and I was a little achy but they say giving birth is like running 20 miles at one time or something. So, I think what you are experiencing is normal :) but, doctors know better
  • I had mentioned this is a what to expect after delivery post awhile back. Totally normal and most likely due to hormones. I had the same thing happen to me after both my births

  • My mom had a similar experience after my sister was born, she said it felt like the flu. It turned out she had a uterine infection which her doctor said isn't uncommon and after a week of antibiotics it cleared up no problem - I'd get it checked for sure but it sounds like you shouldn't worry :)
  • Yup , I had night sweats and I'm guessing we get chilly because our clothes are all wet. I also felt crampy with breast feeding , it got better for me after day 4ish
  • After both my babies but especially my 1st, I had incredible night sweats. Because my clothes and blankets were soaked I'd wake up shivering. I knew to expect it with my second so I'd go to sleep on a towel and keep spare pj's and a blanket next to me. I think it's the come down from the hormones /getting rid of fluid from pregnancy.

  • I've had night sweats and headaches. No chills or cramps yet. 10 days pp.
  • I'm 20 days pp and I still get all of this. The night sweats are thankfully tapering off, but I still get hot flashes during the day, cramping while bf-ing, the odd headache (usually around dinner time). I didn't have any of this with my first, so it's all weird and gets filed under "normal". No worries, it will eventually stop.

  • I definitely had this with my first! I have yet to deliver my second, but I'm definitely not looking forward to all the lovely pp symptoms! Without a fever it's very unlikely it's an infection. Truly, it's probably all completely normal. Your body has been through a lot and hormones are powerful things!!!
  • I just put in a call to my dr about this as well. He said that as long as I don't have a fever it's most likely just from my milk coming in but to keep an eye on it. And let him know if it doesnt get better in a couple days. It's comforting to see that others have had a similar experience (even though I'm sorry you are experiencing it as well!)
  • I've had some random boughts of terrible chills. No fun at all
  • I had this and my ob told me I had the beginnings of a breast infection. She put me on antibiotics and told me to continue nursing as much as possible. I also think I had a clogged duct so I would massage it in hot bath. Felt better after a couple days on the meds.
  • I had this while I was still in the hospital 7 day PP. It subsided after 24 hours and they theorized it may have been due to my milk coming in.
