Book recommendations?

Maybe this is overly optimistic of me, but I've been thinking lately how to spend my maternity leave without going crazy from being cooped up in the house. I've already added a bunch of shows to my Netflix queue to watch, and now I'm also thinking of making sure to have a good book or two on hand to read. Of course, we'll see how this all actually works out once I have a crying, pooping newborn to feed 24/7 lol - that may very well end up taking up all of my time! But, does anyone have any good book recommendations? Anything you've read recently and really enjoyed? I'm an avid reader and I love to talk books! Hoping to hear lots of good suggestions!

Re: Book recommendations?

  • She's come undone by wally lamb or if you are looking for fluff anything by Jane Green, Emily Giffen or Jennifer Weiner.

I signed up for audible a while back too and love having the audio books. I just stocked up using my credits on some for maternity leave because then you don't need to have a free hand, just the ability to kind of relax.

Also if you haven't read the Harry Potter series do it!

  • i just finished reading The King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. It's a trilogy.  I really liked it (They're turning it into a movie or something - i read somewhere)

Right now i'm reading the first book in the series "Wicked Witches of the Midwest" by Amanda M. Lee. They are like mystery novels i guess. I'm not through it enough to tell you if it's good enough to read, but i'm still reading it so that's a sign :) haha

I've got a whole list of books i want to read on the website goodreads.com which also connects to your kindle. so that's pretty sweet.
  • I really liked What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty - she also has another one that is about to be made into a movie, Big Little Lies, which is good.
  • @mcklough I LOVED She's Come Undone. By far one of my favorite books! And I'm also a huge Jane Green fan.

@suteki325 Rachel Gibson is a great romance writer. Super cheesy books but they are an easy read and pretty entertaining! Start with Sex, Lies and Online Dating, then read the series in order. The other good series is the one about the hockey team.

  • @mcklough I love the idea of using audio books! I've never used them before, but with trying to juggle a baby around, that might be the best way to get any "reading" done! And I agree about She's Come Undone - I think I've read that book close to four or five times now. It's amazing. Thanks for all of the great suggestions so far, everyone! @maluevano - I do think I'm going to check out Rachel Gibson. I feel like a light, fluffy book would be best to start off with.
  • I think I'm going to reread all my Terry Pratchett books. Humorous but light reads.
  • I just got Wildflower by Drew Barrymore to read while on leave. I heard it's really good & it gets great reviews!!
  • I just finished The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins in 2 days. It was a page turner, I couldn't stop!!
  • I'm rereading Harry Potter and the Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse book series :)

  • If you like more of the light contemporary romances I would also recommend Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I also second the Emily Giffin suggestion!
  • Another suggestion--do you listen to podcasts? This American Life is great, and the new season of Serial is enthralling.
  • @cantobean - I've never listened to podcasts before TBH. Is it basically just like listening to the news? I'm confused by them and what they are exactly lol
  • I just started listening to podcasts & was confused too. They are like books on tape but in 10-60 minute increments. They have so many choices. Serial is a great start, I second it :)

and if you like murder-mysteries/page turners I also second Girl on the Train which is a great book and all the Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl) books.
  • @starsinnight Ohhh, I get it now! I'll have to check Serial out then. And I've read both Girl on the Train and all of Gillian Flynn's books, I love that type of genre. Gillian Flynn also just came out with a short story, the name of which is escaping me right now, but I bought that one too. I figured it would be a good quick read.
