Multiples

Infant car seat vs. Convertible car seat

Hello,

FTM and we're having twins.  It seems like there are a few multiples mamas out here so hopefully you will have some input.  I've been looking up whether to get infant car seats or convertibles (starting at infant and up).  The convertibles are appealing financially so that we don't have to purchase 4 car seats within the first few years.  However, it seems like strollers can't really hold infants or multiple car seats.  Besides carrying babies all the time, those carts (for lack of a better term) that you can attach car seats to, seem like they only attach the infant car seats.  I've also read that since multiples are typically smaller anyway, infant car seats are better to start.  I suppose I may have already talked myself into into it, but are infant car seats really the way to go with twins?  Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Re: Infant car seat vs. Convertible car seat

  • We felt like the infant car seats were totally worth it for our boys. There are so many times that we want to just pop them right into the stroller without having to wake them up and take them out of their car seats. We put them in the stroller in their car seats almost daily, so it's totally been worth it for us.

  • My twins are not here yet, so take this with a grain of salt. We are doing one infant seat and one convertible. This works for us financially because we already owned a convertible that we love and with wanting a seat rated for lower birth weights the infant ones were a little pricey (especially keeping in mind that we would be replacing it after 6 months or so anyway). The double stroller we have will let the infant seat click in and the other twin can recline or be worn when we have to go places. We'll see if it drives me nuts, but I hate infant seats anyway, so hopefully it works for us.

  • My twins also aren't here yet, but we're doing two infant seats and two convertible seats, because I would like to be able to take them out of the car or stroller without waking them up.  We are getting a double stroller that the car seats will snap into, and then it will convert into regular seats once they're out of infant car seats, so I feel like we're saving some money that way.
  • We are also doing two infant car seats. Not only the convenience of popping it into the stroller without waking them up, but when I do daycare drop off, I can just take the seats off the base and into the center. With a convertible, I'd have to unbuckle and carry both babies in and out every day. Too easy with the infant seats!

  • Personally I would do the infant seats first and get a stroller that they can both snap into. For us it was so nice to just take the infant seats out of the base in the car and carry it around or click it into the stroller. Especially because they sleep a lot the first few months/weeks. That way you won't have to wake them up. My twins were in their infant seats until 1 year old so that gave us time to be able to buy convertible seats.

  • Mom of 4 yr old singleton & 2 yr old twins.... you need the infant seats!! With a singleton you can get away without one, especially if you will baby wear. But with twins, you NEED the infant carrier. I would get the babies ready and put them in their carriers and then I could finish getting myself ready. If at a friends I could pee before I left... I could clean up before I left someone's house. I had the chance that they may stay asleep when switched to the stroller... so many positives with the carriers... at 14 mo we switched to convertibles and it has been so much harder for me to do things by myself.
  • @wmam35 Just curious... Do you know which infant seats and stroller you're going to get? I'm having a hard time deciding which ones we should go with.

  • My mom use the Graco SnugRide Classic Connect 30 Infant carseat for my little brother (he is 1 1/2 years old now) and it worked really well for him. I prefer the Chicco Keyfit 30 because I am able to install it easier and everyone else in my family used Chicco products for their babies.
