"It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." -Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird
Porter isn't my cup of tea. According to BTN, it is a legitimate name with a history, so I wouldn't side-eye it, but I do think that it sounds odd. Something about it sounds almost like a title? I know that it isn't, but that's how it comes across to me. Almost like you're saying "General Francis" or "Doctor Francis."
Porter:
noun
"a person hired to carry burdens or baggage, as at a railroad station or a hotel."
I'm so tired of jobs as names. I get people think it sounds cool but it's not.
This exactly. Would you name your kid "Waiter"?
I'm not being flippant by asking. This is the next baby naming trend on the horizon, i swear. I just found out somebody i know has a friend who named their kid "Dockter" - spelled like that because youneek.
The chances that kid is going to go to medical school and open a successful practice? Not good enough to name the kid "Dockter". My good god..
That being said, Porter is WAY better than Dockter. But still.
I don't think Porter is that terrible. I wouldn't choose it, but it's not awful.
This. I also prefer the flow of Francis Porter over Porter Francis, but if it causes confusion with your husband's father having the same name, I can understand putting it as the mn.
Also, to me at least, Porter is a somewhat outdated term that doesn't come up in every day conversation like doctor, waiter, lawyer, etc. It's not unlike Cooper in that regard . . . sure, it's technically a profession, but I've yet to meet one.
Porter for the reasons listed above, although I wouldn't side eye it.
Francis, because, although it is a legitimate name, I feel like it's one of those names that a boy would be made fun of for having. Maybe because I only know female Frances/is' and it sounds girly to me. I think it's fine to keep it in the MN slot though.
Thanks for all the honest opinions everyone! We'll definitely be keeping Francis in the same, after DH's father and all of the men in his family have Saints for the mn's so we are keeping along with that tradition. But seriously, thank you, given me lots to think about!
I don't mind surnames as given names but Porter gets a no vote from me. I think it's like naming your kid Maid Tiffany or something, it's a job but worse is that it's a servile job.
ETA Nothing wrong with servile jobs, just don't name the kid after one.
I like it (sorry BNB). I would love to use the name if we ever had a boy, but we already have a cousin with the name, another cousin with a dog named Porter, and a friend of mine now has a Porter.
Cheers! I like porters. Oh, wait... We're not talking about beer? Never mind
In seriousness tho - Francis is great. But to me porter will always mean beer. I probably wouldn't side eye it as a real life name. But when he's a kid I'd wonder if his parents were beer snobs ('scuse me, aficionados), and when he's an adult anytime I bought him a drink I'd buy him a porter. Even if he was a martini type of guy.
I love the name Porter! I don't, for a second, think of Porter as a noun when I hear it. Personally, I'd MUCH rather give my son the name Porter than Francis! Frank, is great - even Frankie. Porter is unique yet doesn't sound made up - I say go for it!
My daughter is Frances, so I like Francis. I don't love Porter and I don't hate it, but my main thing is that I don't feel like those two names *go* together very nicely.
Sorry, I immediately think of the word portly, or porker. As a plus sized person I would have not enjoyed having a name that could so easily be turned into a taunt, though I know kids will find ways to tease someone about anything

Also Frankie is a wonderful nn. Francis is adorable imo.

I like Francis Porter much better.
