which doll to buy for my son?

This is probably a stupid question. I want my baby to give his/her older brother who is 3 his own baby doll.  The problem is we do not know the sex of the baby.  My son wants a girl, but I have a strong feeling the baby will be a boy.  But I'm having trouble deciding if we should get him a boy doll or girl doll.  I'm not sure I want to buy both and give him the doll of the same sex as the baby since we would have to order a boy doll and returning anything back to amazon is a bit of a pain.  Or does it even matter the sex of the doll?

I really don't think the sex of the doll matters at all.  Get him a girl doll.  My boys had a melissa and doug one and a JC toy( I think) one that were good and not expensive.

  • I got my nephew before a small boy cabbage patch doll. He loved it! Carried it everywhere. Honestly I would think boy, so it is something he can relate to.

But then again my mom has this huge ugly girl doll at her house that all the little ones just love! It's so funny to see them dragging this huge baby doll around with crayon all over its head lol
  • Are you waiting to find out the sex until birth? I'm not sure the sex of the baby doll matters too much. We plan on getting one for DS1, but I was going to let him pick it out.

  • Not for the same reasons (I'm one and done), but DS has two dolls. They're both girls. I got him those soft Groovy Girls dolls. They're colourful and have crazy hair. He liked playing with them (but they're put away right now because I like to switch out his toys every so often so it's like he has brand new toys and doesn't get bored with them). He was between 1 and 2 when he played with them. He just mostly liked shaking them.
  • Am I reading this right- you want the doll to be a gift from the new baby to the big brother? I think that's a really cool idea. I'd get him a girl doll since you said he wants a baby girl.

  • I would also get a girl, then if your baby is a boy if he feels disappointed at all you can just be like baby brother is a boy, but YOUR baby is a girl!

  • Why not get a baby doll and then buy an extra set of clothes for it so it could be dressed as a boy or girl?
  • I got DS a yellow cabbage patch doll to tote around, but I gave it to him as I hit the third trimester so we could start refering to it as "his baby". We did know the gender, so the doll already had a name, but you could just refer to it as "the baby". He would show it pictures in books and we even started putting it in the carseat in the car the last week and a half.
  • I bought my son a cheap $15 doll from Walmart for Xmas. I was upset that all of my options were pink and "girly" instead of more neutral so I just took one of his baby sleepers and put it on the doll. We don't call it a he or she. We just call it baby.
  • You are over thinking this by a lot.
You're right, I am over thinking this, which I have a tendency to do.  Thank you for everyone's responses.

Thank you, but I can't take credit.  I've read it's a popular thing to do to help lessen jealousy issues and so he can take care of his baby while DH and I take care of our baby.

I have picked up a girl doll from the store.  That's what he wants and it will be easier to return if he decides he wants a boy doll instead.  Thank you again for everyone's help.
