Placenta Previa

We had our mid-pregnancy ultrasound last Thursday and I am happy to report that baby boy is perfect and growing and appears healthy. The ultrasound wasn't all good news though. I was diagnosed with placenta previa and was told today that it is pretty much right on top of my cervix and not favoring front or back.

I am scared and worried since I have a DS and I want to make sure that I am still caring for him as well as possible, but since I officially can't lift anything it's making life hard to rely on everyone else for a bunch of things. Anyone else been diagnosed with this? How are you handling it?

Sorry for the length!

Re: Placenta Previa

  • Im not going through this, but just wanted to offer support. Do they think it might shift at all? Hope you have lots of help from your partner/family/friends with lifting and anything you need!

  • I don't have an experience but wanted to offer support.  I have friends who have gone through it and know it can be difficult.  I know there can be a chance it will move as the pregnancy progresses but I don't know at what point that is not possible.  Did they tell you if there would be a possibility it would move?  I don't know much about it so forgive me if that is a dumb question.

  • I was diagnosed with this Placenta Previa with my 1st pregnancy. It can be annoying for since you can't-lift anything heavy, have sex, or exert yourself too physically; however- usually the placenta migrates over away from the cervix and towards the top of the uterus.  Mine moved around my 20th week and I was given the green light to resume sex and exercise again. Try not to stress.

  • I was diagnosed with a partial placenta previa at my anatomy scan last week. I was put on pelvic rest and told no exercise or lifting over 5-10lbs. My doctor didn't seem overly concerned over it and said that the placenta moves up to 90% of the time and we will just be monitoring it.
  • Mine is fully covering, like smack dab centralized over my cervix. She did say it has a chance to move, I just won't get checked for any movement until around 32-33 weeks. I haven't had any other complications so my OB doesn't seem worried it's just hard for me to acknowledge when to slow down since I've always been the "go, go, go" type of person.

    Thanks for your responses!!
  • Sorry to hear that you are going through this.

I wish they weren't making you wait so long before getting it checked again! I'm sure that once it's checked though, it's will be higher up, and that you'll feel much better.

I think that if I were you, I'd tell the doctor it was giving me anxiety (you seem to be handling this wonderfully, but I'd be upset!) and ask to be checked again sooner than 32 weeks.
  • I wanted to offer moral support.  PP makes a good point, if in a month or so your anxiety increases, that should be enough reason to get an ultrasound.

  • I had partial with my last and was told it would move. Since you are so early in the pregnancy you do have a better chance of it "moving" by the end.
  • I had this with my first, complete coverage, had a bleed around 21 weeks, was put on bedrest and told no-way would it move, doctor scheduled a 35 week C-Section because she was very worried about me going into labor (I am high risk with a blood disorder and take Lovenox)... At 34 weeks, after being on bedrest for literally 5 months, had an ultrasound and it had moved! The doctors could not believe it!! So they cancelled C-section and took me off BR... went into labor, and when my water broke, the force of the contractions pushed my placenta back over my cervix, and had to have an emergency c-section! The doctor had NEVER seen anything like this before.
Literally, she still talks about it, and I am now pregnant with my third and she said she actually is very conservative with previa's after my experience. It just shows you seriously never know what is going to happen in a pregnancy, the body is so weird!!
I would say be really careful though and really listen to your doctor on taking it easy!! Usually they use the 3 bleed rule, after the third bleed from a previa they usually have to deliver you or put you on hospital bedrest!
    Good luck!

I had this as well with my last. It's hard but like pp said it usually moves up
  • I have it now and I am on modified bedrest, no sex, no exercise, no lifting, no walking or standing for long period of times. It has been hard, but I am ok with it, anything to make sure my precious LO is ok. My husband and son helps with cooking and house chores, but since my husband work and I don't, it's usually just me and son doing things, which I am grateful for. I have to have a C-section anyway, so I am not worried about if it moves or not, just if I start bleeding and something is wrong. Try not to worry and feel bad that you need help. I am sure hubby completely understands.
